"You're back?" Madam George dropped the pan and wiped her hands, stepping out of the kitchen.
"Why did you leave without telling us? Your friend was really worried about you. We thought you went missing and we had no way to contact you. How are you feeling? Did something happen?"
He warm eyes and worried tone made Kim feel at ease. She knew it was genuine, thus her eyes began to itch. She had previously promised not to cry, especially on good occasions, so she took a deep breath to calm her nerves before giving a warm smile in return.
Madam George tightly embraced her, her thoughts swiveled to how comforting a mother's hug really was. Because of which she couldn't hold back her tears.
As she bawled her eyes out, Madam George rubbed her back, "It's going to be alright." Her words were more than comforting.
This is what she craved for, the love and care of a mother. Kim had long forgotten how it felt like.
Depending on others made her uncomfortable specifically because of her experience as a child. She knew no one really considered her as she was cast aside, ignored, by the other kids, the matron inclusive because she was nothing more than bad luck.
Whenever she thought of relaxing or finally being happy, something would remind her that she was not meant to be loved. Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click for visiting.
After all, those who had treated her genuinely ended up dead. How then could she think to be happy or accept care from others.
Other than the fact that she was scared of being deceived by people, she also feared the death of those that really cared. It had happened a lot for her to close off entirely.
"Come sit." Madam George guided her to a seat. "What would you like to eat?"
"I'm fine, I ate before coming." She politely declined her offer.
"Really? I can't tell, you're so skinny."
She laughed, rubbing her stomach, "Ma, look at my stomach."
Madam George frowned, "Did someone say you'd become ugly? Don't listen to them! Eating to your satisfaction is more important. Besides if they don't love you when you're fat, they don't really love you. Don't you think so?"
Kim nodded while she chuckled. Of course, she knew that already but that did not mean she would then become obese. She loved food. She loved cooking, trying out new recipes she finds online but she had to consider her body too. She could not always indulge, it wasn't healthy.
"Then wait, I'll get you something. I just got back from the market today, I got crabs, oysters and lobsters. You should try them, they're really big. They were caught just today too. Definitely not trained, wild ones."
"Then I'll indulge just for today," she smiled sincerely.
"That's right, eat more!"
Madam George found her way to the kitchen to prepare the food specifically for Kim. While she cooked, Kim greeted the other workers. Since it was past breakfast, the restaurant was almost empty so there was really nothing to do. As she was restless, she went into the kitchen to a.s.sist Madam George.
Not long after they began eating and chattering, they heard gunshots. As if on cue, they immediately locked the doors and windows before laying flat on the ground.
They could hear people screaming and running just outside the restaurant.
Another happy occasion had been corrupted. Kim lay silently in a trance. Her mind drifted off to a distant memory.
She had just been adopted. They were really good people who treated her like their actual daughter. She had insisted on going to an amus.e.m.e.nt park that day. May be if she hadn't, they would still be alive, she thought. Tears streamed down her eyes as she reminisced.
On their way back home, they got into an accident and her parents died on the spot, leaving her behind. Her uncles and aunts showed their true selves as they took over everything before her parents were properly buried. Then she was sent back to the orphanage.
This was only the beginning of her misfortune as she was termed a jinx.
While she lay distracted by her thoughts, she couldn't hear anything happening around her.
A few persons began pounding on the door of the restaurant, begging for them to let them in. With Madam George's permission, the door was opened for these strangers.
At the same time, a shocking thing happened which had never happened before. An explosion went off, shattering the gla.s.s of the restaurant. As Madam George and a few other workers helped opened the door, they were all standing close to the windows and so the debris of the gla.s.s greatly injured them.
They fell to the ground, groaning in pain. Kim was woken by the sound of the explosion. She saw as the gla.s.s. .h.i.t Madam George. Her heart leaped right out her mouth.
