He only showed him the surface, Carl had no idea how deep it really was. He only hoped his father would not do more than he expected. He was not sure how Carl was going to take it. You might push a tiger when it's still a cub, that does not mean it would not grow or it would let you do as you please without seeking revenge.
Carl was indeed a double-edged sword. Would teaching him turn out to be harmful to him in the future. Were they arming the hand that would stab them?
Chamberlain rubbed his eyes. If it were just simple politics, he would let Carl go someday. But he accidentally found out his father's plan, so bringing Carl into his team was not necessarily a good thing. There was no going back if he comes on board. But at least he was going by a fake name.
"The sooner you start, the faster you can leave, get going." He advised.
Carl flashed a rare smile that was reserved for Kim, "Yes sir!"
Unknowingly, Chamberlain's eyes turned gentle as the corner of his lips turned upwards.
What exactly was he worried about. He was such a fool and fools don't die easily. He thought.
Carl returned to his desk with the hope of getting free as soon as possible. He set a deadline for himself. Three months. He would finish the job in three months and return to his casual life with Kim. Or so he thought.
…
"It's nine-thirty." Her appealing voice sounded with a tinge of anger once he stepped into the house.
"I…"
"Was busy? Couldn't you call or text at least? I was worried."
Faced with her watery eyes, his chest tightened.
"I have no excuse." He lowered his head.
"What?"
"I mean, I might not be able to return early again for a while…"
Loudly swallowing the huge lump stuck in her throat, she asked, "Why? How long is a while?"
"Three months or more because it's required of me." He said. Finally moving from the door.
The lines on her forehead etched in, "You said you're the boss, right?"
Opening the fridge, he took out a bottle of water, "It's not for my company. I'm working for someone else."
He slowly unscrewed the cap, taking huge gulps of water. "Do you need to?"
"I can't refuse." If he could, he wouldn't be working for them, would he?
"Why? Are you in trouble?" Her wobbly voice betrayed her calm.
He sighed. He was in trouble, right? But it wasn't much of a deal. Should he tell her?
"It's the people from before, isn't it?"
He walked up to her, "It's going to be fine, you know?" She said so herself.
She paced, "But it's dangerous."
"I'll be fine."
"It's nothing illegal, right?"
Seeing her worry, for some reason made him elated, "No, it's completely within the confines of law."
"So, you'll be gone for over eleven hours everyday?"
"Are you trying to say you'll miss me? Cause I miss you already." He chuckled, resting his forehead on hers.
"I'm sorry about today, I'll make sure to call you during breaks or whenever I'm free. I'll try to come back as quickly as possible."
After saying that, he placed a kiss on her forehead, "I should go shower."
His kiss made her calm considerably, "Did you eat dinner?" She called out.
"No, I forgot."
"Hurry up then, I'll make you something."
…
The next morning, in her groggy state, she saw Carl rus.h.i.+ng to dress up. She yawned before getting up. "Why are you so much in a hurry?"
He turned to her, "Sorry I woke you up. Go back to bed."
"Slow down, here let me fix your tie."
He stopped in his tracks and let her fiddle with his tie. As he looked into her eyes, he couldn't help but comment, "Don't we look like a married couple?"
The heat rose from her chest to her face. Leaving her as red as tomatoes.
"Do we?" She questioned, feigning ignorance but her face had long betrayed her.
Kim said, "You haven't had breakfast, right? Don't forget to get something."

"How do I look?" He teased.
She shrugged, "Alright."
He smirked, planting a kiss just beside her lips. "I'll take that as a compliment."
Huffing, she exclaimed, "Whatever!"
"Be safe." With that, he exited the house.
Unknown to him, she needed more than just words to remain safe in the red district.
