I stared at the cell wall in a daze. There were a lot of cracks in it. I traced them with my eyes, one by one, starting from the lower left corner.

"1760 exactly. That's the same number of yards in a mile." Ah. I didn't even realize, but I must have started counting by habit.

I looked around my tiny cell. There was a bed, a toilet-if you can call it that, and a sink.

"... How boring."

There wasn't much to do in here. There wasn't anyone to talk to other than myself, though that was my fault. I told [It] to leave me alone since my second day, unless it was urgent or I couldn't handle the solitude any longer.

Exercise was interesting for a day, but I started getting glances from the patrolling officers. At least their conversations were fun to listen to.

I let out a sigh, then lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling.

I noticed a darker spot on the ceiling. It looked like a cat if I squinted. Slightly amused, I looked around for more shapes. There was one that looked like a leaf. That one looked like a horn.

The one right above me... looked vaguely like a sword. I raised my hand and pretended to grab it. It had been a long time since I held a sword.

With a slight turn of my head, my eyes landed on the shape of a bow. Next to it rested a pair of wings.

The images appeared on the ceiling one after another. A small house, collapsed. A broken carriage. A barren tree. A river, overflowing. A shattered crown.

I blinked.

The images were gone, having left nothing behind but random stains and cracks.

...

It was only on the third day of observing 27 did I remember to tell [It] about my visions during my imprisonment.

[It] responded to my story with a question.

- Have you heard of the Rorschach test?

"The what test?"

- Rorschach. A Swiss psychologist. It also can be referred to as the inkblot test.

"No, never heard of it."

- The test proceeds as follows. A series of inkblots are shown to the test subject. After each inkblot, the subject is asked to describe the image they see. The inkblots are shown again, and the subject is now questioned as to why they thought they saw the image they previously reported seeing. The belief is that the test can reveal information about the personality or thought process of the subject.

- To put it simply, the images that you see in random shapes might be telling you something about your inner thoughts.

"That's interesting. So you're saying that what I saw on the ceiling could be some insight into my subconscious.

- That is the theory.

"Then what do you think I revealed?" I ask, a bit teasingly.

- You should be the one who knows that best.
