Rhine is... probably trying to kill the merman!

I recovered my senses from the sudden shock. Although I didn't believe Rhine would do such a thing as he is a professor-leveled biologist, but the smell of the killing intent protruding from him at this moment made me absolutely sure of this idea. Not only that, from the badly mangled tear in his chest, he was most likely attacked by Agares, giving him every reason to do so.

At that time, I would rather let Agares jump back into the sea at once. I would rather lose the opportunity to study merfolk than let this kind of thing happen.

I waved my hands vigorously as I roared out with both hoa.r.s.eness and exhaustion, "Rhine, Rhine, calm down! You let the merman leave by himself. Go shoot at the sea to deter him with the sound of gunfire!"

Rhine remained motionless, the black hole on the muzzle remained unchanged, still aiming at the direction of the merman as he approached with slow steps.

Yet at that moment, Agares did not show any of the so-called biological instinct. His tail supported his body, helping him stand tall, with his back bent as he looked maliciously toward Rhine, like a giant lizard provoked by another male when mating. Agares used his body to form an unbreakable barrier in front of me.

His sharp claws stretched out side by side like two jagged machetes[2] as he positioned in a ready-for-attack posture, forming a devil-like long shadow on the deck in the darkness. I was sure that if he were to attack, it would be a devastating disaster.

My body felt a series of cold-chills as if I was dropped into an ice cellar. I must not let Rhine and him cross swords!

With this firm idea in mind, I used all my strength to throw myself over Agares's tail and opened my arms in front of him before shouting hoa.r.s.ely, "Rhine, don't shoot, go back, return back to your cabin!"

"Get out of the way." Rhine put his finger on the trigger, his face looking grimmer than ever, "Desharow, this is a military operation."

"What?" I even suspected that the storm was too heavy, making me have hearing problems. but my heart still sank to a low point, because when I looked at Rhine's expression, even by guessing, I came to realize that something fishy was going on.

I faintly smelled a strong, hidden conspiracy. Rhine had been hiding something from me all along. But at that moment, I was not in the mood to think about that because I was sure that Rhine wouldn't need to care about the merman's life or death because he was looking for something else. He definitely wouldn't withdraw his gun, so I had to make a quick, decisive decision immediately to stop what could possibly happen next.

"No, as a biologist, I will never let you shoot the merman."

I hurled a few words before stepping back to grab hold of Agares's body. Although I was only tall enough to reach his waist at the moment, it was enough to disrupt Rhine's shooting. But because the boat was rocking so hard, I staggered along as I exerted all my strength to push Agares back into the sea. However just at this moment, the merman conveniently pulled me up by my waist and used his arm to clasp around my chest as his body bent backward, making an incredible arch. I felt my center of gravity falling into the sea with him and couldn't help using my hand to cover my nose and mouth.

A thunderous bang came flas.h.i.+ng and my thighs instantly burst into fervent heat as a stabbing pain came along after. The sensation caused me to jerk up my leg as if I was suffering from a terrible cramp with my whole leg feeling like it pulled a tendon. Agares's body also shook from the force, the backward momentum came short caused his tail to coil downward. Then, another sound of bullet struck past my shoulder in a controlled manner and soon a jet of blue ink like liquid spurted out and the merman's arm as it subsequently trembled. His claws clutched at my clothes as if trying to grab hold of me, but in the end, his trembling arm let go.

I instantly tumbled down onto the deck, and the pain in my thigh made me kneel halfway up. I helplessly watched as a sharp line tore open a curtain of rain curtain and hit Agares straight on his tail, making him curl up his body and crawl in front of me. The blue liquid running down from his wound was mixed with rain and merged with my blood to form a poison-like color.

No matter how strong a species is, they were still no match against weapons created by humankind. How they were powerful yet so ridiculous, so ignorant, and so merciless!

I grit my teeth and struggled to defend Agares with my body. I believed that my life still held at least some value for Rhine, I had no choice but to have hope in that idea.

Agares was lying in a pool of blue blood, his body was curled up with his slightly twitching tail pressing on my lower leg. His dark eyes, weak and half-closed, were staring deeply at me, motionless behind his silky long hair. That kind of look was strange and different, neither afraid of despair and free from the viciousness before, as if wanting to engrave this moment and every inch of my appearance into his memory, he then slowly closed his eyes.

I also felt a strong paralysis attack on my nerves. I felt myself on the verge of collapsing as darkness grew before my eyes.

"It's just anesthetic bullet. Sorry, if I don't do this, the merman would have taken you down to the deep sea with him."

The second before my consciousness disappeared, I heard Rhine's voice approaching, and as soon as I became motionless, two arms picked me up from the ground.
