His grandmother sat beside him, hoping to comfort him with her presence but she really could not do much. She may not be able to comprehend the pain her grandchild was feeling. Her mother never abandoned her, so she was skeptical, what was the right thing to say? Could she really replace his mother? A mother is a mother and she was not his. Could she really provide him with love, care and support to blot or may be blur his hurt?
Ryan's grandfather sat quietly on the couch, it was evident that the little exercise took a toll on him as his breathing was heavy, maybe it was out of anger too. He couldn't help but reminisce the old times. Where had he gone wrong in bringing Judith up? She was never wrong, he made sure she ate three square meals daily. She had new clothes for every season too. Though they are not as wealthy as the upper cla.s.s, they had more than enough. Besides, she was an only child, so she never had to give up anything for anyone, she had all their love and attention.
How did she turn out to be so greedy and selfish? He even made sure to enroll her in one of the best schools in the capital with his salary as a lecturer at the university. She never lacked anything, she always had more than enough, then why? Her upbringing was not lacking either, he made sure to discipline her when she erred. He thought her life lessons, so why? Ryan's grandfather sat, questioning the decisions he took concerning Judith. He couldn't figure out why she changed to the extent of neglecting her own child.
"It's getting late, let's eat lunch." His grandfather said, trying to ease the atmosphere. He was a very traditional man and did not believe in dwelling on problems for too long. If there was no solution in sight, move on. His wife patted Ryan, "Come, today, I made meat for you, so you should eat, you've been asking for it for long, right?"
Ryan really wasn't in the mood to eat, even the thought of meat did not break away the sadness and hurt he was feeling. His grandmother smoothened his hair whilst consoling him, "Don't be sad, it will all get better." At her voice, he raised his head but his eyes were bloodshot. His grandmother's heart ached for him, tears trickled down her face. She had told herself not to cry but watching Ryan's slow movements, she could not bear it.
He was really out of it but was trying to keep it together, this only made his grandparents feel horrible about themselves. He slowly made his way to the dining table, as he sat, he stared at the food before him and found he had no appet.i.te. His grandfather sighed, he could not bring himself to pick up his spoon. How could he bear to eat when his grandchild had not eaten. The situation left a bitter taste in his mouth.
"I'll eat later." Ryan stated, before retiring to his room. His grandparents observed his every action but did not try to stop him. They could not possibly force him to eat his food or heal his broken heart. Not long after, his grandparents returned to their bedroom.

Judith drove for a long time, hoping to drown the anger and pain she was feeling in the cold breeze. She wanted to have a drink but considering her status, she could not afford to get into trouble so she kept driving with no destination in mind. As she wandered the city, she found herself in her university.
She had known Brandon from middle school, he had a crush on her back then and was forward about it, even though he was already in high school. She did not try to drive him away or reject him. She let him do as he pleased. Then she was bullied for her poor background. Most of the kids in school were from outstanding families while she was just the child of a lecturer. Brandon was the only one who treated her kindly, she automatically a.s.sumed he was just like her.
By chance, she found out about his family, she bounced on her toes because she did not reject him. It was a good opportunity to finally climb up the ranks where no one would dare bully her as the young madam of the Blackwood family.
With that thought in mind, she acted like she was unaware of his background and accepted him. To Brandon, he had found a good woman who was willing to be with him not for money, but because she really cared. Her every action, made him lose himself to her. She was beautiful and the desire of most boys in school but she was his. She ignored those rich guys and accepted his unknown origins.
Her dream of the perfect home, the perfect family shattered when he married Beverly, she was reduced to a kept woman. The anger and hate she felt towards Beverly could not be exaggerated. Beverly had killed her children, her family, her dream of a better home.
But Brandon's promises to her made her persevere. She could still recall the number of women that mocked her on the day of his wedding. But not long after, Beverly died and she was able to reclaim what was hers. Carl only needed to die.
