Her voice hid her fear but from the way her hands were shaking, you'd know she was anxious. While she was complaining, he hugged her, "I'm sorry.. I just.. since the..." He didn't really have an excuse. It was just on instincts, zone he acted on his instincts, he didn't know she would react like this. He just stood there embracing her. She visibly relaxed once he embraced her. She stopped shaking too. "I understand, don't do that again." She said with a warm voice but actually, she didn't understand. She had always questioned characters in movies who always try to check out every thing, even though they know it's dangerous. Can't they just hide? There's a really popular saying, "curiosity killed the cat," in this case those actors and Carl wanted to act heroic, she would not let him risk his life to go check out the situation. Even if someone might need help, it didn't matter, she wanted to be selfish today and the opinion of others did not matter either. The whole world can burn, she would never let him enter into a burning building to save a person. He was her only companion, her only family, he did not need to be a hero.
She had forgotten that earlier she wanted to cup a feel, right now, her mind was occupied with negative thoughts. She would never put a stranger's life before his, it didn't matter if someone was bleeding just outside her door and she could probably save that person by pulling the person in and applying pressure on the wound, she refused to open that door. She is self-centered, and so what? She never claimed to be selfless. The more her thoughts spiraled, the tighter her hands around his waist was. She was so scared she would end up alone again she refused to let go even when he tried to pull away.
"Kim! Kim! Kim!" He exclaimed while shaking her. She couldn't hear what he was saying. The voices in her head telling her she would forever be alone dulled his voice. Carl was also scared by the way she was reacting but he calmed down soon enough as he began patting her hair, "It's going to be alright, you're not alone, I'm here." He continuously whispered by her ears. Soon, his comforting words drowned the voices in her head.
However, her eyes began to itch when she recalled unpleasant memories. When she was only eight, her adopted father died trying to save her, she had always blamed herself, her adopted mother inclusive. She was nothing but a curse that destroyed her adopted parents' home. She had grown up believing that because most children never returned to the orphanage but she had always been returned time and time again because of one misfortune or the other so over time, she had grown to believe she brought nothing but misfortune to people. She was so scared that she would be abandoned so she built a wall so high, constantly pus.h.i.+ng people away. It's not like no one was ever drawn to her, it was just because she kept every one at arm's length, not wanting to hurt or get hurt in the process. Carl wanting to go into danger only brought back her pain, the memories she had long buried, hoping to forget. As memories flashed through her mind, she began trembling, his words were lost once more. She couldn't think straight, the strength in her hands only grew, Carl who was already bruised wanted to cry out in pain but he held it back, he held it back for her sake. He did not want to frighten her more than she already was.
What should he do? What could he do? He was not a doctor, he had no knowledge of psychological trauma, the more she shook the more panic-stricken he was. He kept patting her hair, he did not know how long they stood but when he felt her legs weaken, he pulled her to the bed. Without much difficulty, he was able to lay on the bed with her resting on his body still holding him tight. He knew her hands may not be able to handle the pain, so he turned, lying on his side before putting a pillow under his body to support them.
