Carl again pulled out a sit for Kim, she couldn't help but wonder why he was acting nice, like a gentleman. Not that he wasn't ever nice or gentle but cooking dinner, pulling up a sit for a lady, that's a different kind of gentle, the way you treat your lover, not your sister.
She liked it but she would prefer if their relations.h.i.+p was defined. She didn't want to start having weird ideas about them. She consider that questioning him might make things awkward again so she decided to enjoy his act while it lasted. I mean, what could go wrong, right?
So she calmly sat down. He was still beaming with smiles like something exciting happened to him. 'Wait, did he get a girlfriend? He couldn't possibly have, right?' she thought. She couldn't be that patient anymore so she decided to ask.
"What's so exciting? Care to share?"
He looked at her with questioning eyes. Before he could give an answer. His gaze s.h.i.+fted to the waiter.
"Can I get you anything?" The waiter asked robotically with a bored expression. He was obviously unhappy with his job.
Looking at Kim, Carl asked, "What would you like?"
It was her first time here, so she didn't want to place an order. Her hesitation made the waiter frown. I guess he wanted to leave as soon as possible.
Glancing through the menu, she said, "Not sure."
"May be you could order for me." She suggested.
He looked at the menu, nodding. He wasn't sure too so he looked at the waiter, ignoring the scowl on his face. "What do you suggest? May be the Specials?" He questioned.
"Ok. What would you like to drink?"
"Water is fine for me."
"Me too."
"I'll be back in a few minutes." The waiter simply said, happy to be leaving the two.
They were left in silence after the waiter left. She began drumming her fingers on the table. Since she stopped, she put her hands on her thighs and began picking at her nails. Carl was still staring at her like he was watching a movie. She felt his eyes on her, it made her feel inadequate, like he was out of her reach and couldn't possibly match up to this brilliant man; exposed, like he could see her, he could see her flaws, he could see her naked. She immediately wrapped her hands around herself. Fidgeting, biting her lips, praying for the waiter to come quickly.
Raising her head, she wanted to ask him to stop staring at her, then her eyes met his. They were wild and deep and dark, like the ocean. It gave her goose bombs, her breath hitched, her face tinged red. Why does he torment her? She pressed her hands to her cheeks, "I'd really appreciate it if you stop staring." She said in a whisper, he barely heard her.
"I'd really appreciate it if you look into my eyes while talking to me." He said in reply.
"I can't."
"You can't what?"
"Look into your eyes of course." She said like it was the obvious reason and he was pretty dumb not to have known.
"And why is that?" He asked, placing both hands on the table
"I have no idea." She said calmly.
"I promise to stop staring if you look into my eyes whenever you talk to me."
She looked at him with disbelief. 'Is this guy serious?' The waiter interrupted before she could say anything more while he took her silence as a form of agreement. As they both weren't sure of what to say, they ate in silence.
After paying for the bills, Carl held out his hands for her. She gladly took it. Her mind however was turning like wheels, 'what does this mean?' she kept asking herself. As she was lost in thought, she didn't notice he would occasionally glance at her with a warm smile on his face.
They walked back home in silence, entering the house, she let go of his hands but he suddenly pulled her back for a hug.
