They felt closer to each other than ever. All Kim wanted to do was cuddle but she understood they had more things to do.
So while Carl went to the balcony to call Chamberlain, she remained in their bedroom to call Sean.
Without any form of hesitation, she dialed his number, "h.e.l.lo?"
"Thanks to your help today my husband has been released. I really appreciate it. I feel saying thank you isn't enough." She went straight to the point.
His voice came through the phone, "You don't have to thank me, you paid for his services so you helped the company."
"But it was also because of you he came immediately to our rescue, I would have been so lost if he wasn't there to guide us," Kim admitted.
She was ashamed of the fact that she panicked, she was supposed to focus and try to solve the problem but she was so afraid that he would be locked up that she forgot all she had learned.
"I'm glad I could be of a.s.sistance." He hesitated before asking, "Right… have you heard from Bella?"
"No, I haven't. Actually I forgot…" she admitted rather remorsefully. Bella was supposed to be her friend but she had made no attempt to check on her or find out about her situation.
The following day after Bella left, she called and her line wasn't available. Then she told Sean about it. These were the only things she did. After which she totally forgot. She had no excuse.
"Your families are close, right? Can't you find out if she's okay?"
"Right… I'll look into it."
"Let me know as soon as you contact her. See you soon," she waited for his reply before hanging up.
On the balcony Carl stood wondering if it was a good idea to call Chamberlain. He wasn't so sure about it… should he ask what his arrest was about? Or should he collect evidence first before confronting him.
Actually he felt perplexed because he didn't know if he could trust Chamberlain. When they first met, he threw his weight around and even threatened him but later… admittedly, Chamberlain's att.i.tude towards him changed.
Carl paced to and fro contemplating his next action when Kim embraced him from behind.
"What's bothering you?" She worried.
"I can't decide on whether to call my boss. I mean, at first he did force me to work for him even after I repeatedly told him I didn't, he threatened me. But after spending time with him, I realized he wasn't as cold and as brilliant as he portrayed. He even seemed lonely… we joked around and he became my friend.
Now… I can't decide if I can trust him. There's a part of me that wants to trust him but there's also a part that keeps doubting him. After all, there are so many people more skilled than I am. Why didn't he hire them? Why was it me? He told me it was because of my background but he knows I got kicked out."
After saying what he had buried in his heart for long, he felt good. He had always wanted to ask Chamberlain these questions but he didn't think Chamberlain would answer.
Truthfully, there's a part of him that already trusts Chamberlain that was why he didn't tell Mr. Anderson that Chamberlain threatened him. But there was still that voice of reason that told him to be cautious and not act all emotional just because Chamberlain was his friend.
"You have a lot of questions and doubts, if you don't resolve them now, it'll lead to more problems in the long run. I say call him, ask him these unanswered questions, then you'll know if you can trust him or not."
Carl broke into a smile. His wife was brilliant. He should tell her more of his problems. Consequently, he whirled around. "Have I told you how brilliant you are?"
Her eyes sparkled at his praise, "No, you haven't but you can start now."
He laughed. Cupping her face, he began "My wife is brilliant. Not to brag but also amazing, smart, hardworking, beautiful. The best companion I could wish for."
Kim became embarra.s.sed at his words. She wasn't used to receiving compliments like this. And when she did, she thought it was fake but now she felt her husband's compliments were genuine so she felt a little shy.
"You're also brilliant and hardworking and handsome and you're also the best."
Her words made Carl roll back in laughter. She looked so innocent saying those words. He really missed this carefree Kim that was childlike. Now she was back and she was his.
His laughter made her hide her face in his chest. She had embarra.s.sed herself once more, "Stop laughing and call your friend, we have things to talk about."
"Sure."
Carl watched Kim stride back inside before calling Chamberlain.
"h.e.l.lo?"
Chamberlain's gruff voice sounded, "Sick of your wedding leave already?"
Carl shook his head, it seems Chamberlain was unaware of his arrest. "No, as a matter of fact, I'm enjoying it…"
Chamberlain interrupted him mid way, "Then why are you calling?"
Carl sighed before spilling, "I was arrested for laundering today thanks to your company," his tone was a little sarcastic.
"What?!" Shock was evident in Chamberlain's tone.
"What? You didn't know?"
"I didn't."
"You're slacking," Carl remarked.
Carl thought that if Chamberlain did not know of his arrest then it was the work of Charles Stan.
Chamberlain also thought it was the work of his father. He felt ashamed… It was a first.
No doubt, his hands weren't clean as many had died from a single command he gave. He had worked to clear every obstacle from his father's part and he had committed so many crimes. Although he had never killed anyone with his hands, his mouth had given those orders countless times.
He felt nothing while doing those but somehow, Carl getting arrested made him feel ashamed of himself.
"Why did you pick me? I feel I shouldn't trust you and it was your plan to make me the scapegoat from the start. If not why else would you give me that position?
I'm aware you met up with my father too, I'm dying to know why you did all these. I want to know if I'm just a p.a.w.n in your silly game or if we're friends."
After getting the load off this chest Carl felt relieved. Sure enough keeping things in your heart wasn't good. He should practice this in his marriage too.
