"Happy married life," Carl wished him jovially but he couldn't hide the mockery in his tone.
Chamberlain was in a three-piece suit, he looked as das.h.i.+ng as ever but for a man who just got married to his childhood sweetheart, he did not seem happy.
"Wipe that dirty smirk off your face, let's eat." He was obviously annoyed so he decided to poke a sore spot, "Besides, don't act like you finally got her, or did you?"
It might appear so but he made progress yesterday, didn't she open up to him on her own?
Of course Chamberlain had no idea he was. .h.i.tting cotton.
"For a married man, why are you more concerned about me than your WIFE?" Carl struck a nerve by emphasizing the word wife, almost as if he did not want Chamberlain to forget about his predicament.
Chamberlain's mouth twitched. He had an urge to smack Carl. He simply shook his head to clear his thoughts before dragging Carl by his hand.
He ran his hands through his hair in frustration, "Why should I go with you? Aren't you afraid that people might misunderstand us? You just got married, you should be eating lunch with your wife and not me."
"Who said we aren't eating lunch together? As my person, you just have to accompany me." Chamberlain shamelessly tried to convince to come along.
Carl shook of his hands, "No! I don't want any weird rumours about me."
Chamberlain laughed heartily. Making Carl blush in embarra.s.sment.
"Stop teasing me," Carl muttered.
"With your low voice you might make people misunderstand. She's already in the car, let's go." He said, grabbing his hand again.
"No." Carl said shaking his head. "That would be inappropriate and she wouldn't like it. And what if it gets on the news? I bet there are a few reporters outside."
"Then just drive us to Blue Bell, they won't be able to get in anyway."
"Fine, let go of my hand but you won't be able to escape your wedding night." After speaking, Carl walked ahead leaving Chamberlain behind.
He might be able to delay it, but for how long? Chamberlain closed his eyes and ma.s.saged his neck.
'The things I do for family,' He mumbled before walking out.
…
"Carl, you're eating with us?" Lena gave him a questioning glance. She had a.s.sumed he was only driving them to have lunch, now they were together in a private room.
"I'd rather not," Carl muttered.
"Sorry?"
"It's a celebration. Since your family and friends are not here, I'm his only…" Carl's eyes met Chamberlain's expectant gaze before concluding his statement, "Friend. Anyway, congratulations! Wish you a happy married life and LOTS and LOTS of kids."
Carl finished off with a pleased smile. His excuse for being here warmed Chamberlain's heart. He did not expect Carl to make up an excuse or call him friend. He was so pleased that Carl's wish for them to have many children did not register in his mind.
"Yes, I know it's little but our friends and family are not here, he's the only one." Added Chamberlain.
Lena's eyes moved between them before settling on Carl, "Oh.. thank you Carl."
She knew Chamberlain was avoiding her but she chose to believe their excuse. After all, they lived in the same house. She wondered if being married would change things between them. She wished for nothing more than a good marriage. Since she was married to him now, she did not have to hold back anymore and do her best for their union.
"It's nothing." Carl said. Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click www.webnovel.com for visiting.
…
After the warm meal, Carl dropped Lena home before returning to the office with Chamberlain.
"Friend," Chamberlain rehea.r.s.ed just outside his office.
Carl sat at his desk before scoffing, "Don't kid yourself, it was just an excuse."
"You can't take it back, you're my friend now." Chamberlain smiled charmingly, a smile meant for the ladies.
Carl rolled his eyes at his childishness. "Our age gap won't let us be friends."
He revealed, "Lena is older than you by just a year."
"That's different. I don't like you either."
"Yet, here we are. I look after you, I even make sure you eat lunch. Aren't I the best?"
"Best what?" Carl raised his brow before adding, "May be because you've never had a friend, your sense of friends.h.i.+p is twisted."
"Don't act like you've ever had a friend… oh Kim… right, she's your sister," he mocked before heading to his office.
It was known that these aristocrats were fake and couldn't be considered friends. They merely had contractual ties. It was simply relations.h.i.+p based on business. Offer and acceptance couldn't be termed friends.h.i.+p. With a little bit of backstabbing and selfish desires.
In a dog eat dog world, where power and fear triumphed over everything else, there is no place for friends.h.i.+p. Only naive people would be foolish enough to believe that the aristocratic families were close or friends.
Under the façade of deep bond and friends.h.i.+p lies secrets and evil intricately woven into the very foundation of the country.
