"From when I was abandoned till when I turned two, I guess I was the apple of everyone's eyes. Everyone loved me in the orphanage. Even when I was little, I had long flowing black hair.
It was the envy of most children at the orphanage, even the adults. They all complimented my hair. In some way, the matron and caregivers, cook inclusive was biased to me.
Then, I did not understand the intricacies of human behavior. I a.s.sumed anyone who gave me attention loved me. I was under the impression that everybody really cared about me.
However, I learned that humans could be scary. Not to mention fake."
As Kim spoke lowly with darkened eyes, it seemed she was reliving those memories she had tried to put behind her.
Carl frowned. Then he also recalled his father, weren't humans exactly like this? He may have been young then, his memory vague but he would never forget that his father once doted on both him and his mother.
He really wasn't sure when or why things changed but without his mother noticing, he was sneaking out of the house to meet his mistress. At the end, she was kicked out of the house even with her frail health, he had no pity for her and he was powerless.
His maternal grandparents were dead as for his father's family, they did not care after getting the wealth they needed.
Unconsciously, his hands tightened around her, 'What happened to you?' he wondered.
Kim felt comforted by his embrace even though it was slightly uncomfortable, she said nothing about it.
Then she continued with her tale of the past, "When I was two, I was adopted by loving parents. Everything was going really well until the day I insisted on going back to the park. There was an accident and they both died on the spot.
I was left behind with ho injury whatsoever because my mother s.h.i.+elded me."
It was a memory she wished she did not have to recall but she had to let everything out sooner than later.
She tried to gulp down the lump in her throat but it refused to budge. Still she continued with her story.
"You know… going by the adoption law, I was legally their child even though we had no blood ties.
Contrary to my expectation, after their death, those kind uncles and aunts maligned me. After all, I had no blood ties with them, why should I remain in the family after my parents were dead? So before they could be lain to rest, their properties were disposed of and I was returned to the orphanage. I couldn't even send them off properly."
Carl knew she must have blamed herself for their deaths. So he consoled her, "It's not your fault."
His words earned him a shudder from her. Kim froze.
All her life she had been told it was her fault, how then was it that he said otherwise?
She smiled wryly, "Indirectly I caused their deaths."
Carl shook his head. You can't possibly know there would be an accident, can you?"
"It's not your fault." He repeated.
His words sounded in her ears and her heart trembled.
When she was younger she had wished someone had told her it wasn't her fault but wasn't this the reason she was pushed aside in the orphanage? She was a jinx. A curse. Nothing but bad luck.
How many times had she been told that she was the cause of the misfortune?
She had even started to believe it.
Her luck caused misfortune to others.
Was she not always exempted from every tragedy? Leaving only those around her affected. She had never been the victim of her own Ill luck.
That was what the matron told her.
Somehow, her eyes found her shoulder. 'At least this time around, I was a victim and Madam George still lives,' she comforted herself.
Carl who was observing her noticed her action. Swiftly, he a.s.serted, "At least you're my lucky star."
"What?" She asked, stunned.
"Remember the day we met, if not for you, I would have slept out in the cold. Heck! I would have died hungry.
When I was kicked out, I had nothing but my clothes on. You gave me warm food and you gave me a home. How can you be anything less than a lucky star. My own lucky star."
Kim only stared at him with mouth agape. She had nothing to say to that. She was only repaying him for his kindness. If he had not come to her aid that day, may be the story would have been a lot darker.
"You're my lucky star too. My first friend." She revealed.
Carl gave her a warm smile that thawed her heart, "I guess we were made for each other."
His words made her blush profusely as her heart hammered against her chest.
She hurriedly hid her face in his embrace. Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click www.webnovel.com for visiting.
His chuckle lightened the atmosphere. It made her bitter past seem irrelevant.
