After a half-hour's trek, a village at the end of the trail came into view. There were 50 or 60 houses in the village, mostly old bark-roofed, with one or two blue-tiled ones, which were much worse than the dwellings beyond the mountains. There were no lights in the whole village. Ning Tao and Lin Qinghua didn't know if the villagers in the mountains cut the lights and went to bed early to save electricity, or if there was no electricity at all.

The moon on the 15th day of the lunar month was both large and bright, and its cool moonlight hung over the village like mist.

Ning Tao watched the village closely with his skill of looking, but he didn't see anything wrong. It appeared just a normal village. However, he felt something hidden in the hazy moonlight and looked at him and Lin Qinghua with cold eyes.

"What's wrong, boss?" Lin Qinghua asked, sounding nervous.

Ning Tao shook his head and replied, "Nothing. Let's go and see. Follow me closely and be careful."

Ning Tao walked to the village with his small medicine chest. Lin Qinghua followed him closely. They came to the village one behind the other.

At the entrance to the village stood a crooked locust tree, under which stood a stone tablet engraved with "Big Bowl Village". The letters were mottled and blurred, and the stone tablet was broken and might have 100 years of history.

The locust tree was also very old, with a large number of white flowers, making the air fill with the fresh fragrance of locust flowers. Regardless of this gloomy and weird place, this locust tree was good and its flowers added some elegant archaic charm to this place.

"Big Bowl Village, what a strange name!" Lin Qinghua muttered.

"Come with me," Ning Tao said, stepping over the stone table into the village.

Caw! Caw! Caw!

From the village came the sound of crows, but they did not see them.

Suddenly a night wind blew and the trees on the hillside swayed and rustled as if someone were whispering in the dark mountains or crying in a dark corner.

Lin Qinghua got nervous and seemed to be stimulated. His eyes turned green, and his handsome, gentle face had become a fierce face, with triangular eyes, a big nose, a large mouth, and a stubbly chin.

"Who's this?" Ning Tao inquired.

"I don't know," Lin Qinghua replied in a low and hoa.r.s.e voice. "But people who can leave personal information in the human gene-line are powerful. I think he is something, so I use his face to boost my courage."

Ning Tao replayed Lin Qinghua's words, lost in thought. Then he suddenly thought of something, but he couldn't explain it clearly.

At this time Ning Tao found that this village was abnormal—he didn't smell people, nor did he see any human innate aura in any room. If a room was occupied by someone, he would be able to see his innate aura, for the walls of the old houses were mostly wooden boards, and there were gaps in them, so he could see the people's innate aura within it at once. The situation made him feel slightly nervous. The guy was meeting them in this deserted village. What did they do if it was a trap?

"Boss... Is there a ghost?" Lin Qinghua was more nervous. Although his face now looked fierce, he was still Lin Qinghua, a timid new demon.

Before Ning Tao could say anything, a light came on in front of them.

The light dispelled the darkness and a stone building emerged from a shadow. It was a strange building with only four walls and no roof. At the foot of the front steps stood two stone lions, one with a limp and the other without a head.

The light came not from an electric lamp, but from a white lantern. It was hanging from a bamboo pole in the wall, and it swayed gently in the wind. The fire flickered as if it were going out at any moment.

Under the white lantern stood a man with a big bamboo hat, making his face invisible. He wore a black robe that covered the lines of his body, but Ning Tao and Lin Qinghua could tell that he was tall. When such a person appeared in such an environment, he reminded people of the ancient swordsman, who was a very powerful man and could fly from house to house and walk on walls. Instead of a sword, however, he was holding an ice cream.

The ice cream ruined his image.

"Come here, my friends," said the black-robed man, in a husky low voice. With that, he lifted his ice cream and licked it.

Lin Qinghua's legs trembled with fear.

"Don't be afraid. I'll protect you and stay with me," Ning Tao comforted him.

Lin Qinghua nodded and obediently followed Ning Tao toward the man.

The man wearing a bamboo hat and a black robe also walked out of the ruins of the building with only four walls, and murmured, "This village has a history of hundreds of years. A group of Ming Dynasty soldiers who did not want to surrender to the Qing Dynasty fled here, became bandits and built a fortified mountain village here. They often drank wine and eat meat in big bowls, so the village was named Big Bowl Village. Unfortunately, as you can see, the village is deserted. The old died of old age, and the young moved into the city to pursue modern urban life. They don't need me anymore. The world has changed. It's no longer the world I know."

Ning Tao and Lin Qinghua were a few feet away from the black-robed man, but the man's voice sounded like he was talking in their ears. Every word was clear, and they could even hear his breathing!

"Who are you? Why did you ask us to come here?" Ning Tao asked in a loud voice.

The black-robed man said, "Change brings prosperity. It took this ancient country just 30 years to reproduce the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty through reform and opening up. So reform is important. We have to change."

His words sounded so strange that Ning Tao felt there was something wrong with this mysterious man. But now that they were here, he would not be reconciled unless the matter was made clear. He led Lin Qinghua and strode toward the black-robed man and soon came to a clearing at the end of the village where the man was.

The black-robed man looked at Ning Tao and then at Lin Qinghua. Two seconds later, he said, "Why did you change your face to Wu Sangui? At the sight of this face, I want to smash it."

Ning Tao couldn't help but cast a glance at Lin Qinghua's face again and was surprised in his heart, wondering, "This is Wu Sangui who fought to get his concubine back in history? He was so ugly!"

Lin Qinghua was embarra.s.sed and nervous. He changed his face back immediately. He, a new demon, had no other ability, but was very good at changing his face.

"Buddy, you asked us to meet you here, but we know nothing about you. I just asked who you were. Is it difficult to answer?" Ning Tao asked.

The man reached out and took off his bamboo hat, a thin face appearing, his sharp eyes like green deep pool. He had a moustache above his lips and under his chin, and with his thin face, he had a touch of graceful bearing like that of immortals. But his green eyes betrayed him—he was a demon.

He was transformed from a man into a demon. Without the ledger of bamboo slips, Ning Tao could guess that he was a new demon.

"My name is Yin Molan. I used to work for Eastern Depot of Ming Dynasty, ranking grade five," said the man in the black robe. Then he arched his hands toward Ning Tao and Lin Qinghua.

"An imperial guard of the Ming Dynasty? You... Aren't you hundreds of years old?" Lin Qinghua asked in surprise.

Yin Molan nodded slightly.

Ning Tao's reaction was flat. Chen Pingdao had lived for more than 2,000 years, so Yin Molan's current age was nothing compared to Chen Pingdao's. But out of politeness, he arched his hand just like what Yin Molan did and courteously asked, "Nice to see you, Senior Yin. You gave Lin Qinghua the prescription, and then you asked Lin Qinghua and me to come here. Am I right?"

"Yes, but there's one thing you're wrong about. What I gave him isn't a common prescription, but an elixir prescription," Yin Molan replied.

Ning Tao's heart was filled with terrifying waves! He always thought it was science when he came into contact with Lin Qinghua's project of ancestor seeking. Even though they found the spiritual earth, he still thought that it was just an important material for the ancestor seeking medicine, but he did not expect that Lin Qinghua was studying the elixirs of the cultivating world!

"Senior Yin, why did you gave Lin Qinghua the prescription of the Ancestor-seeking Elixir?" Ning Tao asked, holding back his surprise.

"Didn't I just say that? The world is changing. Times are changing, and we have to change," Yin Molan replied. "I wanted to try refining Ancestor-seeking Elixirs with modern technology, but it failed."

"Is it important to you? Why do you have to make it?" Ning Tao's curiosity grew stronger and stronger.

Yin Molan chuckled. "Young man, if you want to know the secret of Ancestor-seeking Elixirs, you must agree to cooperate with me."

"Working with you?"

"Yes, we work together, and you refine Ancestor-seeking Elixirs," Yin Molan said loudly. "That's why I asked you to meet me here."

Ning Tao was silent for a moment, then shook his head and refused, "Sorry, I don't make elixir for anyone. I'm just a doctor who saves lives. If one day you need to see a doctor, you can come to me. I will help you. As for this matter, forget it."

Yin Molan seemed a bit emotionally unstable. "You are the only one, who becomes a pract.i.tioner from a doctor, I have ever seen. Lin Qinghua failed in that experiment, and I thought he was going to die, but you cured him. Your ability is beyond my imagination. I've looked into you, and found out you have a knack for alchemy. I have a feeling you'll make the perfect Ancestor-seeking Elixir!"

Lin Qinghua looked avidly at Ning Tao. Apparently he wanted to know the secret of the Ancestor-seeking Elixir, which was so important to Yin Molan. He hoped Ning Tao would agree to cooperate with Yin Molan, but he was afraid to ask Ning Tao, which made him feel bad.

Ning Tao actually also wanted to know the secret of the Ancestor-seeking Elixir, and a perfect Ancestor-seeking Elixir. However, as a natural go-between of good and evil and the owner of the Sky Clinic, how could he cooperate with a demon to refine the Ancestor-seeking Elixir which could turn a human into a new demon?

Ning Tao arched his hand and said politely, "Senior Yin, you asked me to meet you. I came and we met. That's it. I'll take you for saying nothing. Goodbye."

Lin Qinghua was very upset, but when he saw Ning Tao turn away, he turned away too. He didn't dare to delay for a second.

Snapped!

An ice cream flew over Ning Tao's and Lin Qinghua's heads and hit the ground in front of them.

He threw ice cream because he was unhappy with the result.
