Moments later, the Imperial Advisor asked, “Has Your Highness found anything?”
The Crown Prince frowned deeply, then quietly asked the leader of the embroidered-uniform guards standing beside him, "Did he really enter the Imperial Advisor's Hall?"
“He did.” The leader of the embroidered-uniform guards confirmed.
At this moment, an older and more seasoned member of the embroidered-uniform guards stepped forward and said, "Your Highness, there is still one place we haven't searched."
The Crown Prince raised an eyebrow and asked, "Where?"
He replied, "The Qilin Hall!"
……
"You cannot enter!"
At the entrance of the Qilin Hall, two embroidered-uniform guards were stopped by the disciples of the Imperial Advisor's Hall who were stationed there.
The embroidered-uniform guards spoke in a cold tone, “We are acting under the orders of the Crown Prince to search for the a.s.sa.s.sin!”
The disciples of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall replied, “There are no a.s.sa.s.sins here. His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson and the Commander have already retired for the night. Do not disturb their rest.”
The embroidered-uniform guards let out a cold laugh, "Ridiculous! A mere Eldest Imperial Grandson dares to obstruct those acting on behalf of the Crown Prince!"
“And a mere dog of the Crown Prince Estate dares to insult the Eldest Imperial Grandson?”
Shangguan Yan's voice rang out steadily and unhurriedly from behind the main hall.
Though she leaned on a cane, her gaze was sharp, her aura imposing, and her entire presence radiated the commanding dignity of the imperial family.
The dim candlelight within the hall illuminated her slender and upright figure, but a sudden flash of lightning from the heavens lit up the entire Imperial Advisor’s Hall, revealing Shangguan Yan’s stunning and majestic face to all.
For a moment, everyone’s hearts skipped a beat.
It felt as though the once-dominant Crown Princess who had ruled over Shengdu had returned——
Shangguan Yan, cane in hand, walked with the poise of an Empress ascending the throne. As she approached the entrance, her powerful aura as the Crown Princess bore down on everyone, creating an almost tangible pressure that reached their very souls.
The two embroidered-uniform guards involuntarily took a step back.
“Third sister, it has been a long time. I trust you’ve been well.”
The Crown Prince approached from behind, his expression cold and austere. He was flanked by over a dozen embroidered-uniform guards, their grand display contrasting sharply with Shangguan Yan’s solitary presence.
Yet despite this disparity, there wasn’t a trace of fear in Shangguan Yan’s eyes. “Father isn’t here, so there’s no need for you to put on a show of sibling affection.”
The Crown Prince smirked mockingly. “So, third sister, you’re admitting it, then? Your amnesia was just an act.”
Shangguan Yan replied with calm defiance, “If you have evidence, feel free to report me to the Emperor.”
The Crown Prince chuckled. "How could I, as your brother, do something so unfeeling? We are siblings, after all. If you truly wished to return to Shengdu, there was no need for such theatrics. You need only have asked, and I would have personally brought you back."
Shangguan Yan let out a long sigh. “Ah, you’re still as fond of eating sweet potatoes as ever.”
The Crown Prince’s brow furrowed tightly at her remark.
Before the Crown Prince could process the meaning behind her words, he noticed the embroidered-uniform guards beside him struggling to suppress their laughter.
“What are you laughing at?” The Crown Prince demanded, his brows knitting together.
One of the guards whispered, “Y-Your Highness, eating too many sweet potatoes can cause, uh… flatulence. She’s saying you’re, well, p.r.o.ne to farting indiscriminately.”
The Crown Prince: “...!!”
"After all these years, third sister really hasn’t changed one bit!" He said through gritted teeth.
Still as infuriating as ever!
Shangguan Yan spread her hands. “Unfortunately, you’ve changed. You’ve aged so much that those who know you might say you’re my brother, but those who don’t might mistake you for my uncle.”
The Crown Prince was so enraged he nearly staggered backward!
Years of managing state affairs had indeed taken their toll on him, while Shangguan Yan, living leisurely in the imperial tombs without a care, looked just as she had over a decade ago.
Clenching his fists tightly, the Crown Prince declared, “Third sister, there’s no need to dodge the issue. I’m here today to capture the a.s.sa.s.sin. Your obstruction suggests that you’re harboring the a.s.sa.s.sin.”
It had to be her. If Long Aotian had nothing to do with the Crown Princess, why would he choose to hide in the Imperial Advisor's Hall during a moment of crisis?
So it was you, Shangguan Yan!
Shangguan Yan’s eyes flickered for a moment before she bl.u.s.tered with feigned confidence, "Do you have evidence? If you don’t, stop making baseless accusations here!"
The Crown Prince narrowed his eyes. Feeling guilty, are you, Shangguan Yan?
He spoke coldly, "I am here today to apprehend an a.s.sa.s.sin. I don’t have time to argue with you! If you don’t want to get hurt, you’d better step aside!"
Shangguan Yan replied, "And what if I refuse?"
The Crown Prince let out a cold laugh. "Then I’ll have no choice but to offend you! Men! Pull my third sister aside!"
"Stop right there!"
Xiao Heng's sharp voice suddenly rang out.
He emerged from the corridor, striding through the main hall to stand protectively in front of Shangguan Yan. His tall and commanding figure formed an imposing barrier.
Behind him, a disciple of the Imperial Advisor's Hall pushed Gu Jiao forward, following closely in his wake.
The Crown Prince glanced at Xiao Heng, then s.h.i.+fted his gaze to Gu Jiao, who sat in the wheelchair. His expression grew colder and more severe with each pa.s.sing moment.
w.a.n.g Xu had already confirmed that the one residing in the Imperial Advisor's Hall was indeed the true Eldest Imperial Grandson.
But why did something still feel off to him?
Xiao Heng cast a calm and indifferent glance at everyone present before addressing the Crown Prince with a measured tone, "Isn’t the Crown Prince overstepping his bounds? My mother, after all, is recuperating here under an imperial decree. If you dare let those servants of yours touch her with their filthy hands, are you not afraid of incurring the wrath of imperial grandfather?"
The Crown Prince snapped, "Shangguan Qing, stop using imperial father to suppress me! As the Crown Prince, it’s my duty to capture a.s.sa.s.sins. Even the Imperial Advisor has agreed. If you know what’s good for you, step aside obediently, or I’ll arrest you along with her!"
Xiao Heng showed no fear, "Then go ahead and try!"
The Crown Prince narrowed his eyes. "Seize him!"
As soon as the order was given, an embroidered-uniform guard lunged forward, grabbing for Xiao Heng’s lapel.
Gu Jiao’s eyes turned cold. In a flash, she ripped off the bandage on her right hand, gripped the armrest of her wheelchair, and propelled herself forward like a cannonball, slamming directly into the embroidered-uniform guard!
She then clutched the guard’s neck and sent him flying out of the Qilin Hall, where he crashed onto the rain-soaked stone pavement with a resounding thud!
The impact was so fierce that water splashed three feet high, every droplet clearly visible.
The guard didn’t even have a chance to fight back, spitting out a mouthful of blood before losing consciousness on the spot!
Everyone was stunned.
The torrential rain poured relentlessly, drumming against Gu Jiao’s body. Her black hair was soaked, and her thin frame, clad in a youth’s long robe, seemed frail yet emanated a terrifying power.
In the midst of the downpour, she turned her head back, her gaze as fierce and bloodthirsty as a wolf’s. She fixed her eyes on the Crown Prince and the embroidered-uniform guards, her voice chilling: "Let me see who dares to touch him!"

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
