Anti-supernatural1 Special Task Force.
A team of ability users that were extraordinary even within the Imperial Army. A team set up to investigate and handle all paranormal cases that occur in the Empire.
The team was basically made up of people that had Paranormal Vision——the ability to see the supernatural, or the ability to manipulate that which was beyond human understanding. From the start, ability users and those with Paranormal Vision were scarce. Which was why few knew of the existence of this department of a handful of handpicked elites.
And the leader of such a team, Major Kudou Kiyoka, was currently busy processing doc.u.ments.
The Captain, despite being the most capable person in the squad, was often drowned in paperwork and seldom seen in the field. Though of course, when met with particularly troublesome cases, he would go down on site. Other than that, he may also go out into the field under orders from above, depending on the situation. However, for now, he was focussed on settling all the paperwork that had acc.u.mulated.
However, something was out of the ordinary today. For some reason, he couldn't seem to concentrate.
Kiyoka knew exactly why. What happened in the morning had been gnawing at him. But despite knowing the reason, there was nothing he could do about it.
I don't know what you put in here so I can't eat this.
Kiyoka spat those words out and left for his room. With Yurie running after him to grumble at his actions while he got ready to leave for work.
「Bocchan, regardless, I don't think there was a need for you to say such things! Miyo-sama worked hard to prepare the meal. Yurie doesn't think that she's someone who would do something like poisoning the food.」
(lilies: yurie speaks in third person. uwu she's so cute)
Since before, he couldn't speak against Yurie who was like a parent to him. However, he didn't plan on backing down on his actions this morning. It was natural that he couldn't consume food made by someone he had barely met and didn't trust. Furthermore, she's the daughter of the Saimoris. It wouldn't be surprising for that family to plot to bury the head of the Kudou family. If that were the case, the Saimori family would be able to replace them and achieve a higher position.
Thus, he wasn't strange for him to be wary of Miyo.
Although there wasn't a need to tell Yurie that. It didn't sit well with Yurie who hadn't considered it2.
「Bocchan, are you listening?」
「Ah ah, I heard you.」
In other words, what Yurie wanted to say was that this woman called Saimori Miyo was unlike all the other matchmaking candidates.
Up until now, he's had many matchmaking candidates. So many that you couldn't even keep count even with both hands and feet. However, most of these women were outside the realm of consideration for engagement. Some expressed strong disdain for such a simple-looking house and refused to even step foot inside. While other's were piqued by the fact that the Kudou family head lived in such a small house. There were also those that constantly tried to charm Kiyoka while abusing Yurie behind his back. And those that made a big fuss over the food and the rooms they were provided with.
While it was indeed rare for the head of a prestigious family to live in such a simple and plain lifestyle. They should've tried to understand him. Yet as marriage candidates, these people refused to do so and adamantly stuck to their preconceived notions about him.
These arrogant, conceited women who acted all high and mighty. Though he didn't deny them, he didn't welcome them either. And in the end, the marriage talks always end in failure.
「Yurie was happy because she's the first person to offer to help me.」
「...Is that so」
When he left the living room just now, he briefly caught a glimpse Miyo looking like she was about to cry. Strictly speaking, she was definitely different from all the women from before.
However, as he got ready to leave for work, Miyo went back to her expressionless self and sent him off at the entrance.
「Ittera.s.shaimase3」
She said in a calm tone. What happened to looking like she was about cry?
「Ittekuru4」
Miyo bowed deeply, exactly as a servant would.
What kind of education did Saimori receive growing up? If she was raised like a daughter of a famous family, there's no way she would turn out like that.
(lilies: exactly >:( my poor baby not given the love she deserves)
(Let's observe for the time being)
Kiyoka handled his doc.u.ments while thinking about the matter regarding Miyo.
He had originally planned on chasing her out as soon as possible like he had done previously. However, this was the first time Yurie had spoken up for someone like that, so he couldn't just get rid of her. In addition, just considering her status as the daughter of the Saimori family. This engagement was not without its perks.
(...Geez, for me to be thinking about women at work.)
How unsightly. He heaved a sigh and put his focus back onto his work.
As the sun went down, Miyo greeted Kiyoka, who had returned from work, at the entrance by herself.
「Okaerinasaimase5, Dannsama.」
「...Tadaima6.」
Even the way she spoke was just like a servant. However, he decided not to point it out.
「Erhm... Dannsama.」
As he was taking off his shoes at the entranceway, Miyo spoke up softly.
「What is it?」
「...I deeply apologise for what happened this morning. Putting myself in your shoes, saying that you couldn't stomach food made by someone you didn't trust. I understand how you felt.」
「...」
「That... dinner is all made by Yurie-san. What is prepared is what is served. I swear, I didn't put any poison. So please 」
Miyo asked for forgiveness and got into the dogeza7 position.
He could understand if she felt angry at how the morning played out. However, it felt unpleasant to be constantly apologised to. Being apologised to so seriously made Kiyoka feel like a villain who was bullying her.
「I wasn't really suspicious of you.」
Kiyoka was just wary of Miyo and wanted to give her a warning.
「I might have been too harsh on my part as well... It was my bad.」
(lilies: good boy who knows when he is in the wrong)
「N-No... That's not the case! It was my fault.」
As Miyo shrunk her pitifully small figure away, she looked even smaller than she already was. Which surprised Kiyoka who didn't plan on intimidating her.
Looking at her entire figure once more, he realised that her appearance was rather awkward. The kimono she wore was so poorly made it couldn't even be considered as old clothes. Though her body was hidden under the clothes, she looked very thin and one could ascertain that she didn't have proper meals. As for her long black hair that's simply tied up. It should be beautiful and straight, yet it was dull and damaged. Those pale fingertips were also far from the unblemished hands a daughter from a well-known should have.
These days, even commoners living in the city were probably more well-put-together than she was. She tended to lower her head so it was hard for Kiyoka, who was tall, to get a good look at her face.
「Where's your meal? Have you eaten?」
「Eh... Uh... I...」
Miyo stuttered.
When they entered the living room, Kiyoka saw that only one portion was prepared. If she had her meal, she could've just said that she had it. But her not replying...
「You haven't eaten? ...Why didn't you prepare your own portion?」
Miyo stayed completely silent.
To Kiyoka, eating with family or people he was close to was common sense, something normal. However, that didn't seem to be the case for Miyo. Or did she think that she didn't have the right to do so?
Kiyoka sighed and thought to himself.
(A really strange girl has come)
