Drowsily, she heard someone opened the door and then shut it, followed by the sound of footsteps getting closer. At this point she was half awake, but did not open her eyes not wanting to get up from the couch.
Madara approached her, speaking almost in a whisper "This fool"
She continued to sleep, then suddenly felt a bit of weight on her body. Madara covered her sleeping figure with his jacket. The warmth brought to her through his jacket was nice.
She slowly sat up, rubbing her eyes a bit seeing him still standing in front of the couch, quietly muttered "Oh, you're back"
Madara out of embarra.s.sment to distract her from the jacket he put over her thinking she was deeply asleep, immediately asked "Do you know what you have done? Without intimating me you left your office early. Moreover you did not pick up your phone, causing me to take a useless round trip to your office"
"...Sorry" her att.i.tude must have really shocked him. He forgot about rebuking her and instead bent down. He lifted her face and carefully observed it for a minute. Surprised, he said "Why are you looking so dull?" Although she always looked like a lifeless doll with that blank expression of hers, there was an undeniable light in her eyes that revealed she was a living human.
"It's nothing" she dismissively turned her head away.
He stood up, folded his arms, saying "Have you cooked dinner for me?" Seeing that she won't talk he didn't push and changed the topic. Just as she was about to say something, her head started hurting again, this time a lot more than earlier.
She leaned forward and held her head with a frown on her lips. "Are you sure it's nothing?" Even when she frowned she looked beautiful, her frown made his heart soften.
"It'a just a headache, it will go away soon enough" she moved her worn out body standing up to prepare dinner.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"Going to prepare dinner" she replied. He suddenly grabbed her wrist, pulling her back. She looked at him questionably.
In a neither too fast or too slow tone replied "I am afraid with your current condition you will burn up the whole kitchen." He straightened up and told her he would cook instead.
It was rare for Madara to openly display an act of kindness, her mood uplifted she went together with him to the kitchen. Pointing to a corner in the kitchen he told her "You stand here and don't move an inch. Just silently observe from here"
Madara took out all the vegetables from the refrigerator, throwing away the ones which were no longer fresh and put the remaining ones in a big bowl filled with water. After that he started was.h.i.+ng them expertly.
"You look quite professional for someone who doesn't even know how to cook" she a.s.sessed.
Bowing his head while was.h.i.+ng the vegetables, he said "I only know how to wash vegetables. Earlier at my home I used to wash vegetables, my mother used to do the cooking and my father used to wash dishes"
They sounded like a happy family. She felt slightly jealous of him. He seemed to have guessed her thoughts, suddenly raising his head glancing at her, said "But now my father is your father. I don't consider you as an outsider"

Although his words were nondescript but still her heart was a little moved by his small gesture. Sometimes this man, Madara, could tell people what they wanted to hear.
After was.h.i.+ng the vegetables, he put the carrots, spinach, and other vegetables in a pile. He placed his left hand at his back and then brandis.h.i.+ng a knife in his right hand he started to 'cut' the vegetables.
Shocked at his action she spoke up immediately "...You are chopping the vegetables with one hand..."
Madara stopped, embarra.s.sed he said "I was afraid of cutting my hand..."
The sight of Madara cooking was already a rare sight, so even though he did not know how to cut the vegetables properly it was still acceptable for her. She also got to see his embarra.s.sed expression, she watched him with a bemused smirk.
Madara did not get angry and continued to cut the vegetables with a blushed face. After cutting for a while he put away the kitchen knife, looked at her with great satisfaction, said "Not bad, right?"
"Not bad" she replied.
"So now what should be the next step?"
Staring at the heap of wrecked vegetables she thought for a moment, "Why don't you fry it first?"
He very swiftly turned on the gas stove, picked up a handful of vegetables that he had just cut and threw them in a pot, he moved them around with a spatula. She could not contain herself further and stepped forward telling him he needed to wash the pot first, pour some oil in the pot and then add vegetables to it.
He turned off the gas stove. Turned towards her and pointed to the corner she was stated at "Stand back" she silently face palmed, she was afraid he would burn up the kitchen.
"Take another pan and add the oil first"
"Not too much" she instructed seeing that he was about to pour too much.
"Wait for a minute, then add vegetables"
"Now add soya sauce and vinegar to it"
"Now fire" he hurriedly put the lid on the pot without panicking at all, proudly saying he had 'mastered' this move in 'kindergarten'.
"..." she had nothing to say in response to his boasting. Feeling extremely accomplished he put all the vegetables that he had just fried into...a basin. A basin. You did not read wrong because those fried vegetables could not fit in the dish bowl.
After finis.h.i.+ng this task, he still had more to say "Do you have anything else to cook?"
She suggested steamed egg custard as the rate of error while preparing the dish was relatively low. There was also no other raw ingredients other than eggs left over from their last grocery shopping.
