After ma.s.saging his hands for about 15 minutes, Van finally laid down and snuggled into his sleeping bag. After staring blankly into the sky, Van turned on his side and watched the small ball of fur that lay on the opposite side. He listened to Sanji's slow breath as he drifted off to sleep.

The next morning Van awoke to the first rays of sunlight coming in through the tent flap. He could still hear the soft breathing that originated from the ball of fur. As quietly as he could, Van slipped out of his sleeping bag and out into the rays of the morning sun. The fire had died a few hours ago and it was time to restart it. A few minutes later, a crackling fire had been made in place of the ashes of the old one. Van had skinned a few rabbits and skillfully separated the edible meats from the guts.

Pulling a metal pot out of his magical sack, Van hung it over the fire. Filling it with rabbit meat, spices, vegetables, and an appropriate amount of water, Van left the rabbit stew to cook while he got rid of the guts for any forest predators to feast on. As the rabbit stew finished cooking, Van could hear the excited squeaks and the rumbling of his and his furry little friend's stomachs. Pulling out two small wooden bowls as well as a spoon for him, he ladled out a large helping for each of them. After placing one of the bowls on the floor for Sanji, the odd pair of man and mouse ravenously dug into the hearty meal that nature had provided them.

As they ate, Van reflected upon the past year. So much had changed in his life-style because of his decision to go on that Beast Hunting trip. He had reached a stage that he could've never even dreamed of having in this life in a few months. As those thoughts flitted through his brain, Yu Lin decided that it was his moment to s.h.i.+ne. His ego had bloated to epic proportions and he was ready to deflate it with a "quick" rant to Van.

"Ah, it really is nice to see that kids these days appreciate their elders…"

Van winced and tried to shut it out of his head with his Qi, but to no avail. Sitting in front of the dying fire, Van stared blankly into the distance as he listened to Yu Lin's speech on Yu Lin's "heart of a saint" and how "caring he was as an elder". A few hours later, the sun had moved quite a ways into the sky and Yu Lin had finally ended his rant, withdrawing into the recesses of his luxury orb.

Having been stuck in one position for such an extended period of time under an enormous amount of mental pressure, Van had tempered his willpower pus.h.i.+ng it to the next bottleneck. Trying to stand up, Van tried to prop his body up with his arm but stumbled as he tried to walk. His legs had fallen asleep on him and were refusing to wake up as quickly as he demanded of their services. Joyful and amused squeaks could be heard mocking Van's unfortunate circ.u.mstances as he stumbled around for a full minute.

After recovering, Van packed up his tent as well as utensils, after was.h.i.+ng them in the river. Slinging his magical sack over his shoulder, Van set out once more with his furry friend on his right shoulder. Jogging across the dirt roads, Van headed towards his first checkpoint, Jade Bamboo City.

A bustling line stood before the ma.s.sive iron gates that led into the city. Guards at the 1st Stage of Dantian Formation processed the travelers as they requested entry into the city at the larger entrance on the left. Some, with a special jade pa.s.s signifying their special status, were allowed immediate entry in a smaller entrance on the right. Amidst the bustling line, there was a youth garbed in green robes. He seemed to blend in with the crowd and drew no attention despite how his outfit stood out amongst the crowd.

Van was practicing using his concealment techniques. Being at the level he was, even the City Lord of Jade Bamboo City wouldn't notice anything amiss not to mention these regular civilians and the gate guards. Slowly but surely, the line moved along and Van waited patiently, observing his surroundings with an apathetic glance. Children wailed as they felt the discomfort of the crowding and the adults discussed with each other in low hushed voices. An hour later, Van had finally reached the front of the line. He was met with the image of two bored guards standing on either side of the open gate holding spears while 4 of their compatriots were processing the line. With a quick glance at the identification papers, the guards would let them pa.s.s after a short inspection, sometimes resulting in the retrieval of some "contraband". But for those that pa.s.sed over a wad of banknotes, the guards let them past with an ingratiating smile on their faces.

To Van's disgust, the guards would take extra "care" in the physical inspections of any females requesting entry. Although they were uncomfortable, they had to endure it with gritted teeth. After inspecting the woman that was in front of Van, the guard waved for Van to come up with disinterested eyes. After a few quick pats and a quick look at the inspection papers, the guard held his palm out discreetly and expectantly. Ignoring the guard, infuriated, Van grabbed his papers and started to continue towards the gate.

"Hey! I'm not done with you yet you dirty immigrant! We have suspicions that you're a spy!"

With a wicked smile on his face, the guard stood in front of Van, stopping him in his tracks.

"To prove your innocence, you're going to have to follow me."

Although he wasn't in a rush, he hadn't wanted to take part in this and display his power. But now that this guard had stopped him, he was going to be forced to give this guard a piece of his mind. Pulling out an ordinary saber, he angled it towards the ground. The guard stared at the youth in front with a mocking look. Since he did not sense a single fluctuation from this youth, he had immediately a.s.sumed that it was some country b.u.mpkin hoping to embark upon the path of cultivation at Jade Bamboo City. Pulling out the sword from his scabbard at his side, he held with two hands in front of him. It was a standard-issue, but still s.h.i.+ned with the appropriate look of a cultivator's weapon. Laughingly, he said to the youth.

"I, your dad, will show you the power of a true cultivator today! Pay attention closely."

As he said that, he dashed towards the green-robed youth striking at Van from the left. Casually, Van lifted his saber moving it into position.

Overconfident!

The guard thought to himself as he continued with his plan, confident in his ability to break the ordinary saber. He could already see the youth split in two with a surprised expression plastered to his face permanently. Then, the sword and saber clashed.
