"This is preposterous!" Bethrion thundered, veins protruding over his neck. His face was flus.h.i.+ng bright red, both from embarra.s.sment and anger. He could not believe what he had heard: altering memories? He had never heard such a thing.

"Is that possible?" Lucas Feuerlon asks. "I agree that it is preposterous—but I would deem it is ambitious, even for you, High Priestess."

"I have never heard of such a thing." Orwell says, agreeing to Lucas' statements. "In my years of examining ancient books, researches, and theories in Magierstadt, I have never encountered such magic that could 'alter' one's memory. It is nothing but impossible and I could not think any mechanism on how it would work."

"Because it is impossible." Sheila answers. "There is no magic that could change something as complex as a memory."

"Then, why are you proposing it?" Orwell asks. "I consider that you would not only alter Feuerlon family's memory, but us, too?"

"You are mistaken." Sheila says. "I aim to only alter theirs, with you as fellow conspirators so we could monitor them, and things would go according to plan."

The d.u.c.h.ess winced, "please give us a profound explanation, Priestess. I cannot hold back my unrest much longer. This is both preposterous and disrespectful, are you not aware? I want to be as calm as possible, but you are not giving anything but hints and vague answers."

"I apologize, d.u.c.h.ess Feuerlon." Sheila says. "Let me explain. Currently, there are no ways we can really alter memories. It is beyond magic—or at least, what we know."

"Then what is it you propose?" Lucas asks.

"Duke Feuerlon." Sheila smiles at Lucas, before turning towards the Duke. "I believe you and the king already talked about his theory in altering memories? Did you think about it well?"

Everyone across the room turned towards the duke in alarm, the d.u.c.h.ess' eyes widening as she gawked at her husband.

"D-dear... you knew about this?"

The duke sighed. "I considered his theory, but I never imagined that it would be upon my family,"

"Enlighten us." Lucas' says, his voice as cold as ice. "I cannot stand being in the shadows."

Sheila smiles. "Very well."

Three thuds from her staff. "Are you all aware of ways on combining magical spells?"

A thunder echoed across the throne room. The sun had set earlier than everyone expected; the photographic illusions took them from noon to dusk. The rain poured harshly and the echoing trickle of rainwater plummeted against the leaves and the ground just outside the castle walls.

"I believe Lucas Feueurlon and I are aware of it." Orwell answers. "But you should consider those who are not aware of mystical arts, or magic itself."

Sheila smiles, and then parted her lips, as to speak.

Amidst the happenings, Lorenz found himself smiling, observing everything take course on their own. Among the other knights, he was the most engrossed with the fact that he himself did not expect to hear: altering memories, history of the king, and many more that rose questions. He grinned. Faustina coming to the castle was indeed interesting.

It wasn't that long ever since he came to the dungeons with the king in quest for the sword of Feuersturm—and from that day on everything was interesting. He knew Alexander Octavius IX was the epitome of perfection, his reign gave him chills. A s.h.i.+ver down his spine took place, as he shuddered in antic.i.p.ation and excitement.

"Ah, the king is as clever as a fox." Lorenz mumbles. "And as smart as a scholar."

Sheila eyed him with her blind, golden eyes. "Lorenz Schmidt."

"Yes, priestess~?"

"You were with his majesty in a quest to retrieve the sword of Feuersturm, correct?"

"Absolutely~!"

"Do you remember how his majesty got the sword of Feuersturm?"

Lorenz smiled. "I do."

"You mean how the king defeated the Dark Jötnar? The evil giant that stole the sword, the creature who resides in the dungeon near the continental cliff?"

"Yes, Orwell of Lotheringwood." Sheila exclaims. "We all know, the people of Feuer, how amazing the king is... by such young age he achieved such glory. Not only in terms of battle-power... but also how he proved himself to be worthy of being the holder of the Opus." Sheila closed her eyes. "He also proposed various theories that we are working on to research. Few of them were considered and are put into action..."

"Such as altering memories?" Lucas asks.

"Such as altering memories." Sheila repeats. "And Duke Feuerlon knows."

"Dear..." The d.u.c.h.ess mumbles.

"I know of it. The king told me this at his young age of fifteen; we were discussing about diplomatic matters and he summoned me to ask of my opinion, along with several others." He says. "He says he came across a spell of the Opus akin in nature and is a possible for a 'combination'. The creation of the path on the nerves inside the brain and the creation of illusions."

Sheila smiles. "That is right."

Duke Feuerlon stared coldly. "He considered testing human subjects. I did not agree to his plans. The half of us disagreed. We are not in favor of using such experiments upon the living, considering the risk; it is mad."

Orwell gulped. The king proposed such unethical experiments? Not only will it ruin a person's entire life, it could drive them mad. Spells to mess with the mind are simply out of bounds. Clairvoyants are the only mages that have the better control of the 'mind' but are not getting further that sharing a fragment of their memory.

"Long ago the Doctors of Feuersturm had been formulating theories and hypotheses regarding the origins of the body; they say that there are these 'cells' that are all inside our body, composing of our genetic materials. These 'cells' have their own corresponding function as well. In our brain there are also 'cells' that transmit and receive information, from our senses. I call them 'neurons'. The king stumbled upon a spell in the Opus that can create and destroy these neurons and another spell that could readjust the timeline of our memories."

Lucas' eyes widened. "Then..."

"We want someone from the Feuerlon family to be altered. Only one. That person must have a memory containing the forged birth of Faustina, and everyone around here shall be the one to monitor her... especially the Feuerlon family."

"A pretend." Bethrion says. "Birth... that means..."

"That's right." Sheila beamed. "The d.u.c.h.ess shall be the one to be altered. Her memories shall change."

The duke stared in fear. "No!"
