"But Brian didn't have dark skin, like this boy does," Aella said, tilting her head to the side. What was so familiar about him? She could kind of see Brian in the boy's face, but there was something else.

"My mother had dark skin. She was the younger sister to the Hero of Air, your mother. The Church sent her away, when she didn't become the new Hero. They retested her, after my birth, and the poison killed her. Though, when they tested me, I am a hero-prospect."

The boy's words were soft, and airy, and it clicked. He reminded her of her own reflection. This boy was her cousin. Aella just got family she didn't know she had.

"Are there others related to me?" she asked, turning to Alfred.

"Probably. The Church breeds us like animals," he said with a shrug. "They want to make absolutely certain they have the next hero in line, when one of us dies. Though your mother apparently got around that by having you. It seems the youngest one, most closely related to the hero, will acquire the powers."

"Then Felix will get my powers, should I die, before having a child of my own?" she asked, looking back at the boy.

"Yes, I believe that's right. There are other children, but they would be further separated from you, than he is," said Josephine thoughtfully.

Nodding, Aella stepped forward and s.n.a.t.c.hed up the boy, teleporting to the palace before his adopted mother, Rose, could respond. Setting him down, she called out.

"Bridgette?"

"Yes?" she called, from the very top floor of the library.

Felix's eyes were wide as he stared at the row after row of books in front of him.

"I have someone for you to meet."

"Really?" Bridgette poked her head out from a pile of books, steadying them with one hand as they threatened to crash to the ground, before extricating herself and starting down the stairs.

"Is that a child? Why would you bring me a child? I don't have time to babysit! There are books to read!"

"This is Felix," said Aella, placing a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"Felix? Your cousin?" asked Bridgette, her tone changing to one of excitement. "How in the world did you manage to get him away from the Church! He was supposed to be going to the southern training fields for training on how to be a Seer!"

"I greet you, Sage," said Felix with a smile.

"Oh, silly boy! We're not in the human lands anymore, so you don't have to use those greetings. Come give me a hug!"

It was obvious, as Aella watched them, that they didn't have any problems getting along. In fact, Bridgette and Felix quickly got into a discussion about the mystery language she was trying to figure out, so Aella left them, to return to the drama that was undoubtably unfolding with the heroes.

"Where is he?!" screamed Rose, throwing herself at Aella the moment she reappeared.

Aella raised an eyebrow as the woman crashed into her, and began pounding her fists against her chest and shoulders. Grabbing the woman by her long hair, Aella bent her back and leaned over to whisper in her ear.

"You will never see my cousin ever again, witch. I will kill you, if you ever lay a finger on me again."

Letting go of her, Aella ignored the woman, and turned to Alfred. "Is Rose important to anyone or anything? I would rather not leave her where she can cause trouble by informing the church of our progress."

"I would appreciate it if you didn't kill her. Even though she is a pain in the b.u.t.t, she's innocent and has done a good job raising that boy."

Aella sighed. She had a feeling Alfred would say that. Looking down at the sobbing woman, she wondered about where to put her. Chances were that she would acquire more and more humans as she traveled through these lands, since Alfred seemed averse to killing them all. She could put her in the treasury room, with the mimic and his chickens. Or the old king might like a permanent visitor. Firion had his hands full with Brian, but maybe she could give Firion a break. Brian would love a new friend. And if she got pregnant, the baby would become the new Earth Hero if anything happened to Brian.

"She can travel with us for now," said Alfred, glancing around the clearing. "We need to keep going, if we are going to get to a good camping spot by dusk. I don't want to be around when someone finds this area.

"I can take her to stay with Brian. We can travel faster without her, and won't have to risk her giving us away to any patrols," said Aella. "I'll catch up."

They all nodded, looking relieved at her offer, and left her with the woman.

"I'll take you to the same place I took your son," said Aella, holding out her hand.

Rose glared at her suspiciously, out of a red puffy face. "You said you would kill me if I touched you."

"I'm killing your freedom," said Aella with a grin, grabbing the woman under her shoulders, from the back, and hefting her into the air while teleporting.

The moment they arrived in her bedroom, she dumped her flailing form onto the bed. Brian jumped to his feet in shock and surprise.

"What's going on?" he asked, looking at Rose as she fought against the blankets, trying to get out of the bed.

"I brought you a new friend. Where's Firion?"

"He left me to do his work. He's a neat guy! I like him. Who is this? I like staying here, with so many friends!"

"This is Rose. She raised your son from a baby when Janice died from her stomach ache. She is to stay in the room, as well. Hear me, Rose? I will have you killed if you leave this room."

Rose glared at her from the pile of cover on the floor. She was so tangled, from her fighting against the covers, she had fallen out of the bed. It would take her quite a while to free herself.

"I hear you, Hero of Air."

"Oh, she's not the Hero of Air," said Brian shaking his head. "She's the Demon King!"

Laughing at the look that came over Rose's face, Aella nodded to Brian and left. It would be fun to hear what Firion had to say when she returned. She imagined Rose would either be dead or needing to be moved somewhere else. But until then, she had stuff to do.

Spying Alfred and the other's not too far away, Aella jumped to their sides. They had gotten horses from the dead men, so she quickly climbed into her saddle, and they hurried off. By dusk, they had found a decent spot to rest at, and it was time for her to go check on things.

Bridgette was busy chatting a mile a minute to Felix, so Aella left them alone. It sounded like they were discussing the mystery language. Stopping by the bedroom, she noted that Brian and Rose were in bed fast asleep together. That man may have a damaged brain, but he certainly knew how to get women into his bed. Firion might not need to have her moved after all.

Firion was in the hallway, waiting for her. "How many other people are you going to bring for me to babysit?"

"Not many. I'm going to demand that part of the palace be delegated for prisoners of war, so I can keep people there."

"We do have a dungeon for that, you know," he said, playing with a small knife.

"I might do that, but for now, none of the people I've brought deserve to be in the dungeon. Maybe if I come across any of the church people, that might happen."

Aella hadn't considered keeping anyone in the dungeons, or actually capturing church members. If they were alive, they could cause her a headache later. She intended to just kill them, unless there were a very good reason.

"Have you learned anything more from our three counselors?"

"There's a fourth counselor, a Xurunas, that is their contact with the n.o.bles. I found him, but he killed himself before I could capture him. He seemed to know something was up, probably because these three weren't around to talk to. I did find Jugthu's kid. He's a cute little b.u.g.g.e.r. She has him with Tezra, who is taking care of him. I left him for you to deal with. I don't deal with kids, unless you want them dead…"

"No, I'll deal with him. Anything else?"

"Gugrith finally broke. The old coot really had a pretty impressive will. He said that two of the Advisors are in close contact with members of the church, but wouldn't say which two. I would hazard a guess it isn't the military chick. She's not had any of the suspicious activity as all of the others. I want to say the white guy isn't either, because I like him, but that probably isn't a safe a.s.sumption to bet on."

Aella nodded. She had already a.s.sumed at least one of the Advisors were talking to the Church, especially when she heard that there was a communications device. But the fact that it belonged to Varnin was too much of a screen. Because the device existed, it would be too easy for any of the Advisors to use it.

"Is he dead?"

"He can be. Do you need him to be?"

"Not necessarily. If he's got any other information, we might be able to use it."
