"Please stop," James pleaded.
Briar finished by doing a complete foot ma.s.sage. James cried into his pillow. Now his feet were numb, but he still felt pain. It was made worse when Briar stabbed him in the back six times.
"Lil..." Hi voice cut off and he curled. Cramps radiated through his abdomen. Strong hands helped him out of bed to release the toxic build up from his bowels. The process repeated a couple times before James found the strength to get Briar to stop. To keep him from touching him again. He wanted Lilly, but Briar said she wasn't there. He didn't believe this Adremedian. Didn't feel like he could trust this Adremdian in the same ways he could trust Lilly.
'Lilly, where are you?' Briar finally asked in frustration.
'I'm down the hall from James' room.'
'I need your help now!'
The door opened, but James prepared himself to fight Briar off if necessary.
'Can you do something? Please.' Briar said, sounding a little frustrated.
Lilly's small fingers lightly touched James' cheek. He didn't brush it away, but his brow furrowed. Her fingers slid and spread across his cheek. Slowly a shaking had came up and covered hers. His milky white eyes staring at nothing.
'Lilly,' he said.
'Yes, James.'
'What is happening to me?!' James cried, fingers digging into her flesh. His anger changing the sound of his voice.
'Lilly is he... a Gerrabella?' Briar asked.
'Part.'
'Don't ignore me! What have you done?!' James demanded.
'Let myself fall in love with a different race!' Then she shoved him away.
James writhed on the bed in pain. He felt Briar get off the bed. 'Where are you?' James yelled. 'Will you abandon me?! I thought you loved me, Lilly!'
The intensity of the pain subsided and James stilled. He heard one of the two Adremedians step closer.
'Lilly, what am I?' James asked quietly.

'To be honest, I don't know anymore.' She sat on the edge of the bed and touched his cheek.
His hand grabbed her wrist and he pulled her onto the bed. 'What is happening to me?! I can't even speak out loud anymore!'
'Are you still in pain?'
'No, but I feel different. Very different.'
Lilly extended her other hand to his face.
He permitted her hand to remain on his cheek and he felt it get warm. Then the warmth spread to the core of his being. James tightened his grip on her wrist, while he gently traced the four grooves on her left cheek.
'You must decide what you want most to be James. A Gerrabella—like those you fought; an Adremedian—like Briar and I; or the Human you have always been.'
Her hand slid slowly from his face.
James pondered her words, feeling the battle raging between the three parts of him. He started to soften. Then his anger flared hotter. Briar pushed him off the bed and away from Lilly. He gasped when he landed on the floor and sobbed. He could hear the war going on inside his head with each exhale of air. James sobbed until he felt a hand on his shoulder. It wasn't Lilly's or Briar's.
"Prince James, are you all right?"
"Car..." He stopped. "Asiis. What are you doing here?"
"The king sent me to check on you."
He nodded. 'Lilly?'
'Nee...in...for...Ge...so...sl....'
'Lilly?'
'Rest.'
"Prince James, would you like help getting back into bed?."
"No. I need to find Lilly." He stood and turned, unsure of where they stood if they were still in the room. 'Lilly?' He felt her hand and smiled, but when he reached for it, she moved out of reach. 'Lilly, no, please.'
'Rest.'
'You also.'
'I will.'
James let Asiis take him to bed.
James slept for two days, but was up early the morning of the third day. It took him a while to remember that he was blind. He joined his fellow Humans in meandering the castle halls. He had to feel along the walls to get anywhere. Finally he made his way to the great hall. Carthago joined him and food was brought in. They chatted while they ate, like always, until Carthago asked about Lilly.
"Lilly?" James thought a moment. "I haven't heard from her since she left for the forest to recover."
"Is she coming back?"
"I think so."
"Hmm. Maybe a ride to the forest will do you some good. I'll ask Asiis to…."
James shook his head. Carthago's words had started to sound garbled. "A ride would be good," he said after a moment. "Torta will know where she is."
"Alright then."
James finished eating then made his way down to the stables. He struggled to get the saddle on Torta until the one of the stable hands came over to a.s.sist. Once everything was in place, James climbed up. Torta s.h.i.+fted under him a moment.
"We need to go find Lilly, Torta," James said, patting Torta's neck.
Torta nickered then headed for the forest.
James tried his best to fall into the rhythm of Torta's stride while they headed for the forest. He tried to pay attention to the sounds and feel of the air around him. Only when they air seemed to close in on him and Torta stopped moving did James try to call for Lilly.
'Lilly?'
'James?' she replied.
'Lilly, where are you?'
'Above you.'
'Above…? Will you come down please?'
'One moment.'
James swung down out of Torta's saddle, but remained by his side until he felt Lilly's hand on his arm. He pulled her into an embrace. 'How are you?'
'Been better,' she replied. 'You?'
'What's wrong?'
'Still getting over the last bit of illness.'
'Lilly...about the other day...I'm...'
'James. It'll be all right. Let it go.'
'But...'
'There is nothing that will change it.'
He held her tighter as Briar left.
'Who else is here?'
'Briar was. He's...'
'What?!' he cried, moving her arms length away. 'You mean to tell me that you've spent the last two days alone with him?!'
'James, I've...'
'No, Lilly! I thought you loved me.'
'I do, James. He...'
'No. I don't want to hear it.' Then he climbed onto Torta and rode away.
'The Gerrabella is closest to the surface,' Lilly's voice nearly whispered. 'They are the only race that gets jealous and angry that quickly.'
James scoffed, but didn't turn around. He felt betrayed. If she was recovered, why had she stayed in the forest with Briar? They were engaged weren't they? At the stables, he left Torta and Asiis led him to his room.
