Chapter 12

"Well, the police department's theory is wrong. It has nothing to do with race," Saya said straightforwardly.

"What's your theory sweetie?" Alexis asked not bothering to question Saya's denunciation of the police's investigative theory.

It wasn't that Alexis didn't think that the country of Anatolia lacked narrow-minded racist citizens. Her stance was more due to her belief in Saya's deductive reasoning and investigative talents so if she says it wasn't a racially motivated crime then it simply wasn't.

Anatolia was surrounded by smaller countries from all sides. If it wasn't for their colossal size they would have been absorbed by other countries centuries ago. Being at the center made Anatolia a melting point of cultural exchange. Still, Anatolians maintained their ident.i.ty and individuality even with the outpour of cultural influences. But while the majority of citizens have chosen to marry within their race, intermarriages weren't rare, especially between Anatolia's number one ally Ortelius.

Ortelius comes second in size to Anatolia. Centuries ago the two colossal countries signed an alliance that forged their friends.h.i.+p to this modern day. With their alliance, they enjoyed prosperity and success like no other country. Their century-long partners.h.i.+p has paved the way for the two cultures to commingle in marriages. Most intermarriages came from citizens of Anatolia and Ortelius.

But why is the relations.h.i.+p between these two countries so important to the s.e.xual a.s.sault cases? Because the women a.s.saulted were of mixed race, having one Anatolian parent and the other an Ortelian. With the police's investigation coming up with nothing but the victims' similar racial backgrounds Saya couldn't solely blame them for thinking that the crimes were racially motivated.

"The lack of evidence and cooperation from the victims have stumped the police. But the theory of these attacks being racially motivated isn't that far fetched if you think about how it's the only common thread the three victims shared. While I do think our country is more accepting and broad-minded, you still can't deny the fact that a minuscule percentage of our citizens are extreme purists. We have very few racially motivated crimes but they do happen," Sota explained.

"The criminal profile doesn't fit. A purist would have made bold remarks taunting the families of the victims right now, denouncing their intermingling. No, the suspect isn't a racist purist. Your looking for a male mid to late 20s probably suffering from dissociative personality disorder who's psychotic break was triggered recently. Why haven't the department consulted with a Special Behavioral Science profiler yet?" Saya asked.

The SBS was a civilian-based organization trained in criminal profiling. Profilers rely on behavioral science, the study of human nature through observations to a.s.sess criminal suspects. Offenders will act in predictable manners due to human nature and profilers use this science to evaluate the mind and actions of perps. How a crime was committed can show one's inner mind and also show future actions they are likely to take.

SBS profilers come from all walks of life with an impressive range of personal and professional history. Unlike most companies with specific requirements, SBS only requires applicants to have a college degree in any field and pa.s.s an a.s.sessment test. Anyone fitting those requirements regardless of health, age, and job history are welcome to take the examination. Of course, pa.s.sing the test to be a profiler is another story.

The examination takes two years in which applicants are sequestered and trained in forensic and behavioral science. Most applicants drop out before the end of the month. Even with the difficult a.s.sessment many still flock to become profilers due to the vast benefits the company provides for their employees.

Sota grimaced but told Saya directly, "To be frank some of the bra.s.ses upstairs don't think these cases are a priority so we didn't get permission to bring outside help. I don't agree of course. The police department has always had a great relations.h.i.+p with SBS. Since the organization has been built they have helped us catch and stop many criminals. I gotta admit that without the victims' cooperation and lack of development, the cases are getting cold and I would love to have SBS give us a hand but I simply can't until the consultation is approved," Sato said grievously.

Saya contemplated her uncle's words and her eyebrow twitched in anger. 'Three women were beaten and raped resulting in one being in a coma and it's not a priority?! What the h.e.l.l were those higher-ups thinking?!'

Seeming to read her mind Alexis nudged her husband as if to say that he needed to placate her. But Sota remained silent because he agreed with Saya. It was ridiculous and unfair. He was in the force long enough to see the subtle corruption in their government. He knew that if the ladies came from wealthy families more resources would be allocated into catching the criminal. The situation angered him and he felt helpless. If Katherine and Reo were here he would have discreetly asked for their aid.

"Saya, what do you think? Maybe you can help. You're as good as any of those profilers from SBS. Your parents taught you about criminal profiling before they taught you how to tie your shoelaces," Alexis said, her last sentence exaggerated but not wrong.

"No, I don't want Saya involved."

"But honey she---"

"Alexis I said no. Saya just got back do you want her meddling in police matters? Katherine and Reo aren't around to watch over her. It's our responsibility as her G.o.dparents to keep her safe in place of her parents," Sota told his wife.

"I just thought maybe she could go over the case files and offer her insights. No one has to know she's helping," Alexis said.

"Do you think Saya will be satisfied working behind the scenes? C'mon she's Katherine's daughter!," Sota exclaimed.

Sota was childish and rowdy at times but when it came to the important stuff he was reliable and responsible. Alexis mulled it over and realized her husband was correct. There was no way Saya would be satisfied working behind the scenes. She was too much like her mother. They needed to be in the middle of the scene a.s.sessing all that they see, hear, smell, and touch.

Saya peered at the polar yet loving couple with cryptic eyes. She loved them dearly and didn't want them to worry about her so she kept quiet as they went back and forth with one another. But she wasn't going to sit idly by waiting for justice that may or may not come.

"Saya thanks for your earlier input. I'll be sure to let the detective on the case know, maybe he can move forward and start a suspect list from the males in the victims' lives who fit your description. But I don't want you involving yourself any further in the investigation. Do you understand?," Sota said looking sternly at his G.o.ddaughter.

Saya remained silent neither agreeing or disagreeing with her uncle. Giving him a slight smile she told him, "Uncle stop worrying about me. I'll be fine." Knowing he'll never get an affirmation from her, Sota swallowed the urge to curse. This G.o.ddaughter of his was troublesome.

Trying to ease the situation Alexis said to her husband, "Dear don't you have to go back to the station soon? I still have to show Saya around the hospital and introduce her to her mentor for her interns.h.i.+p."

"Yes your right darling," Sota replied.

Sota gave Saya a tight hug, pulling her small build against his, and kissing the top of her head he murmured, "Stay out of trouble little one."

Afterward, he gave his wife a pa.s.sionate, tongue devouring goodbye kiss that left Alexis breathlessly embarra.s.sed and Saya averting her eyes in awkwardness. He left chuckling while the two women were aghast at his shameless behavior.

Composing herself Alexis straighten her messy blouse and tangled hair in embarra.s.sment. Clearing her throat she asked Saya, "You're not going to let the matter with the a.s.sault cases go are you?"

"Nope."
