Frowning at him, Xie Mengxuan didn't utter a single word. Geng Zhishan let out a long sigh to calm himself down. With his head low, he asked with anger, "Do you think that man is reliable? Why are you leaving upon his arrival?"
Xie Mengxuan breathed a sigh of relief. "Geng Zhishan, I've made it clear before. In light of my ident.i.ty, he is the one who has the same goal as me. Now we must go back."
"But you haven't recovered from your injuries." Geng Zhishan stared at her legs with a cruel glitter in his eyes. The man dared to take her away!
Xie Mengxuan moved her legs. "It's all right. I'm already able to walk. As to your care, I've kept it in mind, and in the coming days, I'm bound to repay you for your kindness."
However, it occurred to her that although Gu Yusheng was said to have saved her on that day, she would have failed to live on till now without Geng Zhishan. As a result, it was necessary for her to repay him.
Geng Zhishan looked up at her with a serious look. "If you persist, I want you to be my wife as my reward."
He was as stubborn as a mule. Xie Mengxuan became speechless for a while and felt awkward. "Geng Zhishan, do you remember what I've told you before?"
"Yes. But I want nothing but you to be my wife." Geng Zhishan said in a fit of anger.
Xie Mengxuan showed a bitter smile. "You… Well, I'm blue in the face. If you're determined not to change your opinion, I don't know what to do but wish you to adapt the change as time goes by."
It seemed that Xie Mengxuan didn't believe him. A little provoked, Geng Zhishan stood up. "I won't change, and I'll prove it to you!"
Having finished speaking, Geng Zhishan turned around and left. Gazing after him, Xie Mengxuan frowned. Looking at the fish soup in her hand that had become a little bit cold, she suddenly had no desire to drink it.
Every time the fish soup he prepared, it was not hot but warm, just enough for her to enjoy. It was a pity that Xie Mengxuan had lost the desire to enjoy it.
The action of Geng Zhishan gave her an uneasy feeling as if she owed him something.
Geng Zhishan left the bedroom for the kitchen and kicked the woodpile beside him. As a result, Uncle Luo opened his eyes and curled his body to hide behind the kitchen stove.
Out of sight, he gave up pretending to be simple and honest, narrowing his eyes. Another order he had received was still to make Xie Mengxuan stay here. Something unfortunate must have happened in the imperial capital; otherwise, they would not have left Xie Mengxuan alone in this village. However, that man intended to take her away.
That man seemed to be his enemy since he had never received any news that others would come to replace him.
It also occurred to him the simple solution of killing them. However, Uncle Luo was so unreadable that he should be prudent enough to avoid getting exposed.
Sitting near the hearth, Geng Zhishan was thinking about what to do in the following days, only to come up with nothing until the moon rose from behind the forest. Having a look at the unfinished fish soup, he let out a sigh at the current situation.
Gu Yusheng didn't come back till dinner. Xie Mengxuan got a bite to eat and went to bed after a quick wash. When it came to the departure tomorrow, she had mixed feelings.
On the ground, Geng Zhishan was snoring loudly as if he was not that sad about her leaving.
In the dark, with her eyes open, she thought it was not bad for him as she preferred not to hurt his feelings.
In the evening, everyone was in a deep sleep when Aunt Cui sneaked out of her house like a thief. On the alert, she crouched at the corner and slowly moved.
After leaving for a long distance, Aunt Cui ran to the river bank at an amazing speed.
On the riverside, a man in black was standing with his back to her. Aunt Cui swallowed hard and went forward. "Sir, I've failed to carry out your order."
"Well, tell me," said the man in black, glancing quietly at her.
Aunt Cui showed a bitter expression. "We had already brought the young lady into the house. When we were about to take off her clothes to check her virginity, Geng Zhishan came back and drove us away."
The man in black widened his eyes, his voice full of reproach. "What? You had taken off her clothes? You wanted to check her virginity?"
Aunt Cui was in a daze and went backward with a stride. She trembled and said, "Yes. If you want to confirm whether the young lady remains pure, the simplest way was to take off her clothes to check her virginity."
"Don't you dare!" annoyed, the man in black gave her a slap on the face,
Aunt Cui fell to the ground. "Sir, I just followed your instructions."
The man in black sneered. 'What a stupid woman!'
"Really? Did you just come up with such a solution? Why should I choose you? There are many people cleverer than you in this village. How can you be so stupid?"
Aunt Cui had a dreadful stammer. "No. sir. You've told me before that at all costs must we figure out whether the young lady remains a virgin. Besides, it's you who ordered us to find her shortcomings. How come we become the ones who are at fault?"
"I told you to find her faults in order to drive them away. You're such a silly idiot!" The man in black glared at her. "Who allowed you to make decisions without my permission?"
Indeed, the instant Xie Mengxuan was brought back, Aunt Cui had received the order to find her flaws while Geng Zhishan and Gu Yusheng were absent. There were two purposes: One was to check her virginity, and the other was to drive away Xie Mengxuan and Geng Zhishan.
However, this woman failed to carry out his order and made the situation go from bad to worse.
Aunt Cui licked her lips. "But the young lady's reputation has been influenced now, and everyone else is pointing at her behind her back."
"But for the little bit influence of what you've done, you would have been a corpse." The man in black threatened.
The heart of Aunt Cui trembled violently. Since she had benefited from the cooperation with this childe, she was unable to stop. Nevertheless, she felt like being under the control of a serpent.
"Sir, I was wrong. Please give me a chance, and I'll drive them away tomorrow." Aunt Cui clenched her teeth.
The man in black glanced at her. "Don't bother."
"Sir!" anxious, Aunt Cui could not help raising her voice.
The man in black cast a glance at her, and Aunt Cui forced back the remaining words. He waved at her and said, "Listen to me. I have another instruction for you."
Aunt Cui nodded and moved next to the man in black in a prudent fas.h.i.+on. She inclined her ear to listen to him. With a delightful look, she nodded her head frequently. Finally, she showed a smile. "Sir, don't worry. I'll settle this matter to your satisfaction."
