Tears fell down Yoona's eyes as she held Ji-ho's hand in the ambulance. Seeing the ventilator on Ji-ho's face broke her heart. He looked so weak. It seemed like a dream that the boy was jumping moments ago.
From the looks of panic on the paramedic's faces, she could tell how serious the situation was. The atmosphere was tense. However, she didn't utter a word. Instead, she stayed by Ji-ho's side. Right now, even if he was not conscious, what he needed most was someone to stay by his side. This was the role she was going to take.
She also made sure to send Minhyun a message to let him know about the situation. At first, she was reluctant since he was busy with work. However, not letting him know anything was even worse. Especially since she didn't know if the worst case scenario would appear.
When they arrived at the hospital, luckily due to Minhyun's influence, Ji-ho was brought to immediate care. The best doctors in the hospital huddled around, trying to find the best solution to this dire problem.
Yoona waited on the side, not wanting to distract them. She watched Ji-ho from afar, to make sure nothing would come amiss.
Soon afterwards, he was brought to the surgical room.
All she could do was wait.
She sat on the chairs in front of that dreaded room with her hands covering her face. Now that he was away, she was able to release all the sadness out of her. Her tears were uncontrollable. Although she knew that this would eventually come, having it become reality was a different feeling.
Why couldn't he stay healthier a little longer?
Or forever.
In fact, why did he have to suffer and die at such a young age? This is the time of his life where he should be in high school hanging out with his friends. This illness, in itself, had robbed Ji-ho from a normal life.
n.o.body should have their future taken away from them this easily. Technology was so advanced. People were going to s.p.a.ce and making AI. So why couldn't they heal a measly disease? She couldn't understand.
A doctor walked towards her. Seeing that Yoona was in tears, he carefully waited before tapping her shoulder.
Yoona looked up and tried to wipe her tears with her sleeve. "Y-yes?"
"Are you his guardian?" A doctor asked.
Was she his guardian? She wasn't sure where Ji-ho's family was so she decided to take on that role. Plus, he was currently living with her. "Yes, I am."
He proceeded to tell her details about Ji-ho's illness. He also checked her ident.i.ty to make sure that she was someone trustworthy.
However, their conversation came to a sharp turn when the doctor said these words: "I'm understand that Ji-ho did not want to be here, but he should've be at the hospital in full care. But even taking this aside, as his guardian, you should've known that he should not be outside. It is too much physical work for his body."
She pursed her lips. "What do you mean?"
n.o.body mentioned these facts to her.
"Due to the bullet wound, his days had shortened. Unfortunately, the large amount of blood loss had taken a great deal of his body. Also, his wound is not able to heal, making it hard for him to move around without losing more. With his weak organs and these two contributors, he should only be lying in bed. He shouldn't even be walking."
These facts came to a huge shock to her.
No. No. No. The tears would not come out.
Everything the doctor said made the truth come to light.
In the end, him walking around happily on their date is what hurt him.
She suddenly felt responsible for his current state. With his condition, she should've known not to bring him outside. How stupid was she? Due to the strong pills he took, Ji-ho was numb from the pain. He wasn't be able to feel when his body was too fatigued to move on. As the adult, she should've watched him closely to see if he was overworking himself.
Now that she thought about it, he was more pale than usual and his eyebags were increasing.
f.u.c.k. Why was she so stupid?
She took a deep breath out. "So what's the situation like now?"
The grave look on the doctor's face signalled that she wouldn't like his answer.
"From what we can see, because his cells are not regenerating due to his illness, there is a large chance that even if this surgery is successful. His wounds will not heal. This means that he won't be living long after this."
Her words were choked in her throat. She couldn't speak.
No. She didn't want to speak.
Yoona swallowed and tried to calm herself down. "How much more time does he have?"
"If he survives. Only a few days."
In that single moment, Yoona's whole world broke down.
