Chapter 110

From Z: Patch Notes

Hey man, I totally understand. Here's the notes, get caught up, and hit us up when you do log in. The Knight's will just be doing some farming runs till the Dungeon War Kicks off, you're welcome to join us.

~Z

P.S. Also, I don't blame you for wanting to grab some food before immersion. Immersing while hungry is the worst.

James grinned to himself as he started downloading the attachment Z had sent him via the private message. He glanced at the timer in front of him as well. He hadn't completely lied to the Knight, in order to get what he needed.

Following the message about Dungeon Wars, James had drafted up a message to send to Z. However, he had paused before sending it, realizing he still needed to abide by his NDA. He couldn't tell the doctor anything that would raise suspicion. As such, he had done what any other craft teenage gamer did, he lied. Er, twisted the truth.

The message James ended up sending Z, was sent 10 minutes prior to immersion. In it, James had explained to the Knight that he had fallen asleep while binge watching Firefly and had just woken up. He sent Z a message asking if the leader of the Knights Who Go Ni could forward him a downloadable version of the Dungeon Wars notes, so that he could go over them while he was making himself something to eat. Because he didn't want to go into immersion hungry.

Not necessarily a lie, that last part. He had decided to make himself some quick food. Also, as much as it pained him, he needed to be out of immersion in order to send that message. PMs sent while in game had a different marker on them than ones sent outside of immersion. So, to be sincere, he had to send, and receive the messages, while out of immersion. The plan then, was to grab his quick bite to eat, skim through the download, and then open it and go over it with Rue while immersed. At most, the extra 10 minutes out of immersion was costing him about 4 hours of game time. He could afford that. He had to be able to.

Besides, BLANKs dungeon wouldn't be logging in for another hour, meaning James actually had 2 hours total before the dungeon wars would kick off. Meaning 48 hours of in game time. That should be enough time for him to get prepared, fix whatever he needed to, and create a battle plan. Because, if he couldn't at the end of 48 hours, well, then it was really going to be his final immersion in DCO, and there was no way he was going to allow that.

A moment later, two audible dings went off. The first, was his pop tarts finis.h.i.+ng. He had decided the S'more's pop tarts, toasted lightly to make them soft and gooey, would be easy to eat with his bruised jaw. The second ding was his AR gla.s.ses informing him the information on the Dungeon Wars had been downloaded. He quickly sent the doc.u.ment to Rue and grabbed the still hot pastries from the toaster.

With pastries in one hand, and a gla.s.s in the other, he walked towards his room, barely able to keep his excitement down as he ate his snack. Of course, the pain in his jaw was actually aiding a little in keeping his nerves down. It seemed pain did have a purpose, it could help you stay grounded in the now, in reality. It was a rather painful reminder of mortality as well.

By the time he reached his bedroom, half his first pop tart was done. He set his drink, a cold gla.s.s of milk, the perfect pairing for S'more's pop tarts, on his night stand, and began changing out of his clothes. Granted, he didn't need to, but he hadn't actually changed all day, and even though he wasn't going out in public, spending a second full night of immersion in the same set of clothes seemed a bit, uncivilized. Besides, he could put on comfier clothes, so that in the morning, he could lounge about.

Of course, the lounge about plan was only if he won the bet. If he lost the bet, it would probably be sulk about in a realm of sorrow and depression. But hey, lounging clothes served for both purposes in that instance. Once out of his old clothes, and in his comfy ones, he leaned against the nightstand. He had one more pastry to go, and half a gla.s.s of milk.

Slowly, he worked on the last pastry. He checked his messages and saw the notes had successfully been sent to Rue. James had opened them, planning to skim through them, but closed it almost immediately. It would be more logical for him to just hurry up and eat and read the notes in immersion. That was the most time efficient way of going about it.

With only the final half of his pop tart remaining, and his milk down to a quarter, he let out a heavy sigh. He was definitely stalling, and he knew it. His nerves were going crazy, his adrenaline was pumping. If it wasn't for the fact immersion essentially forced a body to sleep, he was sure he wouldn't be able to fall asleep on his own.

This moment, this single moment in time, as he chewed on his final bite, and washed it down with the final droplets of cold milk, was the last moment he would have like this. He was on the edge; he was facing victory or defeat. The moment he laid in that pod, the moment he immersed himself, it would be game on. Whatever happened tonight, whatever happened in the next 9 hours, would decide his fate in DCO. Not only that, it would decide his fate moving forward.

He swallowed the final bite, set the gla.s.s down halfheartedly on the nightstand, and walked towards his immersion pod. This was it. It was now or never. There was no running away. He laid down on the pod, felt the warmth of it flow over him. It did little to chase away the cold chill filling him. No matter what, he would win. And with that, his eyes closed, and darkness met him. It was time.
