After being chased by the kids for a while, Shen Mo felt a little tired. She found a chance to sneak into Su Ye’s bedroom.
“Why are you hiding here? Didn’t you invite the kids here? And you run away from them.”
“I saw you are having fun together, so you are good at playing with kids?”
She Mo gave him a smile. “Xiao Da said you always ask someone to send people to send to the orphanage?”
“Yes, I got to know them several years ago. Back then, I had a friend in the hospital. I went to visit him, and I met a little kid there. Later I learned he was called Chen Hao. He was carefully looking around in the hospital. I had thought that he was looking for someone, but later he told me that he had gotten lost. He said he was from an orphanage. A boy had gotten sick and was coughing all day long, and he was trying to buy some medicine for him. He was still holding some cash, about one Yuan, when he told me about this.”
I called a doctor to follow him to the orphanage to heal the kid. I found this kid called Chen Hao was so bright, so I adopted him, and let him to study in a school. But I finally helped him find his parents, and so I gave him back. Since that, I went to the orphanage each year, with some money and presents. When I went abroad, I asked a friend to do this for me. In fact, the kids change every year. Like this Xiao Da, he was a new one there, only several months. The biggest wish for them is to go out to see something different in the world. So I took them out.”
Su Ye spoke of all this quietly, but Shen Mo felt her heart was touched.
What kind of person was this man standing in front of her? This question made her even more confused. He seemed to be able to do things she never imagined. Now she could never treat him as a common neighbor.
“Let’s bring the kids to the fairground,” she suggested. Since she already knew the kids, and they were so close to her, she felt she should at least make some effort to sustain their smiles a little longer.
Su Ye gave her a weird look. But he still agreed. “Great! But be careful! There are so many kids; it is not easy to manage them.”
“Relax! Those kids are obedient. Do you know the saying that ‘The kids from the poor always grow more mature'?” She suddenly remembered her own younger sister, Xiao Rou.
Xiao Rou was only six years old when their dad died. At first they didn’t know she had blood cancer and still let her follow her everywhere. Xiao Rou even ran away to follow her and her school study was disrupted. One winter day, she was late getting her after work. Xiao Rou waited for her in the cold outside of the school until night came.
She was so sorry to see her like that and blamed her, asking why she had not gone to the restaurant nearby to wait. But Xiao Rou replied that she was afraid that the elder sister would be worried if she didn’t find her. Her tears came down immediately when she heard this reason. Since that day, the younger sister got frostbite on her feet every year. Her guilt about the matter never ceased from then on.
Shen Mo led those kids downstairs, and to her surprise, there was a car there.
“Whose car is this?”
Su Ye dragged the door open and let the kids enter the car. “I borrowed the car from a friend.”
It was a Land Rover. Was his friend a rich one? She became even more confused.
This time, Su Ye didn’t answer her. He turned to enter the car, and yelled to her, “Come on. The fairground will be closed if we are late.
Shen Mo found her own childhood in the fair with the kids. She was so grateful to the kids. In the past ten years, all of her memories were full of bitterness. The happy childhood was lost somewhere she didn’t know anymore.
But the kids successfully brought her back with some small happiness. Though she was a little sad, she was content.
Holding Xiao Da to have a ride on a merry-go-round, she saw Su Ye, who was still in the same place, she felt a bit of lament. Who would wait for her after her life turned over again? Even her parents didn’t wait for her.
Maybe in the future, someone would give her this answer.
Another turn, and she found Su Ye was laughing, with all the golden suns.h.i.+ne spread on his shoulder. The scene was so beautiful!
“I have found out that you are more interested than the kids,” Su Ye said with a smile when Shen Mo and Xiao Da came down from the merry-go-round.
“Why? You are jealous? If you are jealous, why not join in with us?”
“Me? I am a big man. Who needs to play those games?” Su Ye yelled, “How about the rollercoaster? I can take that ride with you.”
Shen Mo was frightened by this invitation. Though she had no acrophobia, she disliked the risky rides and never enjoyed any of them.
But Su Ye already took her to the ticket office. “Kids, how about the sister takes a ride on the rollercoaster with you?”
“Great! Great!” all the kids called out with joy. “Will you come to go on the coaster with us?”
“I ...”
“Sure! Sister just told you all that you should be brave, right?” Su Ye gave her a teasing smile.
Shen Mo stared back.
But she had no reason to refuse the kids. She went to them to say yes. “Okay. . . I will play with you.” And she took this chance to step on Su Ye’s foot as revenge, which made the latter yelp as he staggered.
“Great! Let’s wait and see. You will have so many opportunities to know what crying means when you are on the coaster.”
In fact, Shen Mo herself knew she would be a joke. But in that fear, she also had some expectation. She got into the ride seat and secured the safety belt tightly.
Would this thing be really safe? Would the newspaper report an accident at the fairground tomorrow?
