...
"The mission is located in the Souya kingdom?" Jier had been completely focused on the two hundred thousand gold reward. He hadn't realized the mission was so far away. It was a small well-known empire.
"Yeah. Wasn't it written on the mission request?" Rain blinked her eyes at Jier's question.
"What do we do now? Should we leave right away for Souya?"
Jier shook his head. "No, Feng Wu and I have another task to take care of first. We'll go after we finish."
"What task?"
"Find a lost dog."
The trio stared all thinking: …
Feng Wu sat and drank from her cup.
Because Jier and Feng Wu had the dog mission to complete, they naturally had to hold off on leaving for Souya.
..."We're visiting the dog's owner?" Pei Qing combed his hand through his hair as he asked. The five of them were standing in front of a house gate.
Jier didn't feel like bothering with the three wierdos that insisted on following them so he didn't even answer the question, instead he said to Feng Wu, "Xiao Wu, look around."
"Hmh." [don't remember how I phonetically spelled out grunts before so I'm going with this.] Feng Wu lightly grunted in reply. She walked over to a big tree nearby and placed her hand on the trunk and closed her eyes.
"What is she doing?" Rain asked.
"Could she be absorbing the tree's life energy?" Wind wondered with his hand on his chin.
Pei Qing gave it serious thought before saying, "I don't know."
"You're talking and you don't even know what it is!" Rain gave both a rap on their heads.
Jier laughed at their antics but otherwise remained silent. He wasn't going to tell them anything. They could figure it out slowly on their own.
Two minutes later Feng Wu pulled her hand back and pointed. "That way."
"Alright. Let's get to work then." Jier ordered and everyone rushed in the direction Feng Wu pointed.
It didn't take long before Feng Wu began looking around for another tree to talk to. She put her hand on this one and the process repeated itself. They ran from one tree to another several more times before they finally found the dog in an abandoned little shed.
The dog was actually a small puppy. It was obvious from the blood on its leg that it was hurt. It softly whimpered as it limped over on its broken leg. It was a sad sound that elicited pity immediately.
"What the f.u.c.k? Who'd be so heartless as to break a little puppy's leg like that?" Rain had no resistance to cute furry animals. Her eyes teared up and turned red.
Feng Wu bent down and picked the little guy up. The puppy's eyes were gleaming with tears as it yipped to Feng Wu, telling her its story as though she was its mama.
Feng Wu looked up at Jier. "Doctor."
Feng Wu didn't talk much, but when she did it would always be serious and earnest. Jier didn't intend to stop her, but he wanted to do something else first.
Jier patted her head with a practiced hand. "First we need to let its owner know its injured. She can find out who did this to it. Does Xiao Wu want the bad person punished?"
Feng Wu nodded her head after taking a moment to think it over.
With that settled they went back to the owner's house. The servants watching the door recognized the puppy right way. They let out happy shouts of relief at the sight before running back inside to relay the good news to the lady of the house.
They were immediately invited inside.
They were greeted by the puppy's owner. She rushed over to Feng Wu with her arms outstretched ready to hold her precious puppy. "Thank you so much for finding my baby!"
She was a widow, a plump older woman who obviously loved her puppy very much.
"No. It's hurt." Feng Wu said as she retained her hold on the puppy.
The widow was unhappy at this but when she heard her puppy was hurt, she immediately became nervous. She was a widow with no children so she showered all her love and devotion to her pet. Such a beloved pet, of course she would be distressed to hear it was injured.
"How did it get hurt? Who did it? Tell this old lady and I'll flay their skin alive!" She wanted to kill the person that hurt her baby.
"We don't know. It was already hurt when we found it." Rain looked at the puppy being held in Feng Wu's arms. She had no sympathy for the perpetrator at all when she saw how sad the puppy's eyes were.
In a fl.u.s.ter the widow shouted, "Quickly! Fetch a doctor!"
After the vet left, a charming servant girl of about 15 or 16 came in bearing a tray with cups and a pot of tea. She arranged the cups for Feng Wu and her team. After which the widow poured everyone some tea. As the servant girl turned to leave, Feng Wu called out, "Wait. You must apologize to the puppy."
"What is it? Is something the matter?" asked the widow. She looked from Feng Wu to her maid; a tiny suspicion niggling at her mind. She was quite fond of her cute maid. The girl was a diligent and hard worker.
"Is it not obvious madam? I'm afraid this maid is the one who harmed your darling baby." Jier understood Feng Wu well and truly deserved to be called her friend. She had a habit of being concise and to the point, so even though she didn't say much, he understood the implication behind her words.
Feng Wu was happy Jier understood her.
The tray dropped to the ground with a clatter at Jier's words. The maid was so frightened she visibly paled and collapsed to the floor. She shook her head desperately and in tears cried out, "No! Not me! Madam! I've been wrongly accused!" Her face was the image of innocence.
The widow was deeply moved by the heart-wrenching cries. To Jier she said, "Are you sure? If there is no proof please do not make irresponsible remarks! Nava is in my care. She comes over every day or two to help. Why would she hurt my baby?"
The widow was a kind-hearted person. She found it hard to believe her maid would do something like hurt her beloved pet.
