Chapter 5 The Black Piano

When Bai Feng appeared in front of us, the girl had not yet left. They met at the gate.

“Feng. . . !” the girl called him, surprise and joy in her voice.

But Bai Feng’s expression was chilly. He looked past her and called me, “Snow, come over here.”

The girl turned back to stare at me, with her beautiful eyes full of hostility.

I felt a little awkward and so I didn’t move. Bai Feng saw my hesitation, so he walked over to me and asked, “Why aren't you coming, Snow? Are you uncomfortable?”

I shook my head. The girl had already reached us, and she pointed at me as she asked him, “Who is she, Feng?”

Bai Feng ignored her question. He was worrying about me, and it seemed that he didn’t hear her.

The man in black went to him and stated firmly, “Feng, let’s go home.”

Bai Feng seemed to always listen to him, and he nodded in agreement, though he showed unwillingness to listen to him. He took my hand and followed the man to leave.

But the girl was irritated by Bai Feng’s actions and she ran to yell at him from behind, “Bai Feng, you b.a.s.t.a.r.d, you don’t see me here?”

Bai Feng didn’t answer her, just as before. I felt a little embarra.s.sed, so I looked back at her. She was biting her lips tightly, and her face had turned purple with anger, and she looked like a naughty child.

Bai Feng turned me around by my shoulders, and said softly, “I went to buy some medicine for you. You can take it when we get back. I am sorry that I brought you to a strange place and it made you sick.”

I was stunned. “You ran out to buy medicine for me?”

“Yes!” Bai Feng said. “And I didn’t expect to meet my brother.”

“So,” I was surprised again, “the man in black is your brother?”

“Eh, his name is Bai You.”

“Then, who is she?” I pointed at the girl.

“Meng Wanyi, my fiancée, an annoying girl,” he answered without any emotion.

I was astonished and I released his hand immediately. I stepped aside and left some s.p.a.ce between the two of us, hoping the girl would come up to us. How I hoped my stupid mistake would not destroy their trust.

But Wanyi didn’t hear us. And my sudden movements surprised her. Bai Feng was also surprised and he wanted to pull me back to him, but I retreated several steps.

Bai Feng gave me a disappointed look. I avoided looking straight into his eyes. He sighed and left for the garage.

As I guessed, Bai Feng's house was big and beautiful. The gardeners were taking care of the plants and seemed to be unaware of us as we arrived. It appeared that their only care was the gra.s.ses and flowers, and nothing could change their focus. Even when our car stopped in the yard, the gardeners simply moved out of our way; they didn't welcome the two young masters or acknowledge them. The whole villa was very formal.

However, the servants in the hall were active and warm. They came to greet us and made tea for us.

Mr. Bai was not here, which made my nerves relaxed. I was so fearful to face him, as he had almost the same face as my father.

When I saw Bai Feng’s mom, I felt that the woman’s heart was full of sadness, like Bai Feng. However, she was a good mother, and she embraced Bai Feng with sincere tears. “Feng, you are back.” The emotional expression on her face moved me. If I disappear for half a month, would my father search for me everywhere, and embrace me into him with tears, saying, “Snow, you are back”?

I felt my sneaking away this time was somehow less of a concern.

The lady was tender, and when she heard that it was me who saved Bai Feng, she was so excited to shake my hand to say thank you again and again.

This was my first time to feel a real emotional return of saving someone.

Bai Feng lied about my ident.i.ty, instead only mentioning that I was from Malaysia. This was my first time to the City of Shen. His mother wanted to thank me for saving him, so she asked me to live here as home. So I did.

The dinner was splendid, but they served only the three of us, Bai Feng, his mother and me.

I didn’t know where Bai You had gone, nor did their father. When Bai Feng’s mom invited Meng Wanyi the fiancée to stay with us, she was still angry with me, and she refused her by giving an excuse of having a party later.

She threw me a glance of hatred before she left.

The room she gave me faced south. The moon was so pretty, like being covered with an yellow etamine. But it was as bright as the moon I saw on the Huoyi Island. It was the brightest moon on earth.

Bai Feng knocked to enter my room. We went to the balcony to swing.

“I think you should care about Meng Wanyi. After all, she is going to marry you.”

Bai Feng shook his head, and looked out with an unfocused gaze into the vast landscape before us as if not seeing anything. “I am leaving anyway. I don’t want to waste her time, so I should be cold to her.”

“You don’t want to stay for a long time?” I was surprised.

“No. I came back only to take a look at my mother.”

“Bai Feng, why do you refuse to live with your family?” I asked him.

Bai Feng drank from a cup of red wine as his dark eyes lifted to chase the moon hiding among the clouds. The wine made his perfect lips more attractive. But his handsome face was so blue. “I can give up everything here except my mother. She was so poor. I can’t imagine how lonely she will feel without me.”

“How about your brother? And, your father?”

Bai Feng gave a bitter smile, and said, “You have seen how it is; if we were not at the table, my mom would have eaten the meal by herself. Each meal she has is like this.”

“Your brother and your father never come back to eat?”

“They are busy with their so-called career. They care for nothing else. They would be willing to break the law if it was necessary to fulfill their goal.” Bai Feng was a little drunk, and he said something more, which I totally didn’t understand. After a while, he fell asleep in the swing.

I had no choice but to ask a servant to help me take him back to his bedroom.

After sending away Bai Feng, I fell down on my own bed. But I sound it hard to fall asleep. My brain was full of all kinds of scenes of when we met. The nerves made me uncomfortable. I finally threw off my quilt to sit up. Then I found the source of my uneasy mood. The music of a piano came from outside the room. A melody in blue, with strange sounds. It nearly drove me almost crazy.

Finally, I could not stop myself from going out, and stepped into the corridor to find the source of the music.

I got closer and closer, and soon I found the room where the music was coming from. The door was ajar. I peeked an eye through it, but the room was totally dark.
