Chapter Ch84 - The Truth

Editor: Amaris

If he died, Ren Jing would also die with him.

Ye Chen’s eye sockets were constantly burning hot. This feeling could not be described with words.

There was actually someone besides his parents who cared so much about him that he would go through thick and thin together with him.

How could there be such a foolish Ren Jing? How could there be such a nice Ren Jing?

Ye Chen tried to choke down his tears. “I won’t, I won’t talk about it anymore.” He wanted to tell Ren Jing about Death System and let him know that as long as Death System existed, he wouldn’t die. Even if he had died, he would be able to be revived.

But before that, there was something he would like to know better first.

They had known each other for so long, yet he didn’t seem to know much about Ren Jing.

His past, his childhood, his experiences…

Ye Chen wanted to know. He needed to know everything.

They didn’t go anywhere and only snuggled together on the soft sofa, talking about some old stories which had long since turned dusty while holding warm water in their hands.

Ren Jing said, “You’re all I have in this world.”

This wasn’t a lover’s prattle, but a fact.

He had experienced countless misfortune since he was born.

His father used to be a businessman, earning quite a lot of money. After getting rich overnight, he pursued Ren Jing’s mother crazily.

Ren Jing’s mother came from a great family. Her parents were university professors. She herself also had great future prospects, thus she completely disliked Ren Jing’s upstart father.

But Ren Jing’s father had used every possible means and ways and done whatever he could to fiercely pursue her.

People’s hearts were ever-changing. Even though Father Ren had an uncouth nature, he was tall, handsome, and generous. He also seemed to be truly infatuated with Ren Jing’s mother.

Everyone around had been completely deceived by him and become his ‘lobbyists’. Even Ren Jing’s grandparents were fooled by the beast in human clothing and had acquiesced to his pursuit of their daughter.

Within such circ.u.mstances, Ren Jing’s mother didn’t really have definite views of her own.

As a result, she fell into enemy hands in no time. In fact, Ren Jing’s mother didn’t much love his father. It was just that she happened to be pregnant and she felt that he wasn’t bad at all. Everyone told her: “Looking for someone who loved you won’t make you lose out”. Ren Jing’s mother gradually believed their words.

But who would have thought that Father Ren would reveal his true nature in only a few years.

He was l.u.s.tful, a heavy drinker, and addicted to gamblings.

At first, Ren Jing’s mother was still persuading him patiently. He also promised her that he would change his bad habits. But gradually, the more Mother Ren persuaded him, the more annoyed he became. Later, he began to abuse her by cruelly and continuously beating her up.

Mother Ren was at the end of her patience, thinking of getting a divorce.

Father Ren unexpectedly used Mother Ren’s nude pictures to threaten her. If she dared to divorce him, he would spread her pictures everywhere in the university.

How would Ren Jing’s mother dare to divorce him anymore? If his threat was truly followed through, how would her parents still be able to teach at the university?

They were senior professors who had been honest and upright for all of their lives. How would they be able to bear such scandals?

Mother Ren endured. Yet Father Ren thought that since he already had information which could be used against Mother Ren, he could flung even more severe abuse at her. He insulted, abused, and beat her viciously…

The nightmare she could not escape from felt like a shadow which followed her everywhere.

Mother Ren’s mental condition gradually went into the verge of collapse…

Later on, Ren Jing had turned sensible enough to realize that he must protect his mother, but he was still too young. What could a five or six-year-old child even do?

He wanted to protect his mother, yet his father could shove him away with a wave of his hand.

Mother Ren didn’t love Ren Jing at all.

He met such a man and gave birth to his child. How could she even love this child?

She couldn’t rebel against Father Ren, thus she had taken her anger out on Ren Jing.

If Ren Jing didn’t exist, she wouldn’t have married him, wouldn’t have experienced all of the abuse, and wouldn’t have suffered this much!

Whenever Ren Jing’s father abused her, she would give Ren Jing the silent treatment.

The distorted family relations.h.i.+ps were thus formed since.

Having an abusive father and a crazy mother, all that Ren Jing could do was hide in his room.

The real turning point happened when Ren Jing sought ‘self-help’ for the first time.

He understood that his father was a devil and that his mother was bullied and humiliated. Even though he was treated badly by his mother, he still wished to save her.

After waiting for a long, long time, he finally found the opportunity to get in contact with his grandparents by himself.

Then, he told them everything he knew.

His grandparents were shocked. Ren Jing implored them to immediately report the matter to the police, but they couldn’t believe what he had told them.

Would such a filial son-in-law do such things?

Would their daughter who had been living like a princess endure such abuse?

They simply couldn’t believe it.

Ren Jing was only a child in the end. The more clearly and logically he told them about what he had seen, the less he could earn their trust.

Ren Jing wanted to report it to the police himself, but it was too late.

His father had already found out.

Father Ren was the best at putting on an act, putting up a front so perfect that no one could tell he was lying. He made up a lot of reasons, saying that Ren Jing was picking up bad habits and had learnt how to lie. He distracted Ren Jing’s grandparents by deceiving them with his ‘act’.

When they had gotten back home, he began to go mad and beat the mother and son so severely it was too horrible to look at.

He thought that it was Ren Jing’s mother who had incited this. Not only did he beat up and trample on her body, he also abused her mentally.

“You think your parents care about you? You s.l.u.t! They’re just b.a.s.t.a.r.ds who care for nothing but money. They sold you for five million yuan, did you know that!?”

“As soon as they heard that I would spread your nude picture to the entire school, they didn’t dare to say even a word! Divorce? In your dreams!”

His verbal abuse had probably crushed Mother Ren’s one last hope to death.

She wasn’t a strong person. The only reason she had still persisted up till then was no other but her parents. Father Ren knew her weakness. The result of this fomenting dissension was that she completely fell apart.

Afterwards, she chose to commit suicide.

She became a lot calmer before facing her death. She treated Ren Jing better in those few days. She washed his clothes, prepared his meals for him, lulled him to sleep, doing the most ordinary things like countless ordinary mothers did.

Ren Jing was very happy. Those few days were probably the happiest time he had ever had with his mother.

But in the end, she ended everything cruelly.

His mother had treated him so well simply because she wanted to drag him to death.

Ren Jing would never be able to forget the hands which pulled his ankle like a wet, cold demon from below. He would never forget the way his mother laughed madly inside the water and the despair he had felt when water was rus.h.i.+ng into his mouth and nose.

True despair, pitch-black darkness, the hopelessness of being eternally doomed.

Think about it.

Under such circ.u.mstances, Ye Chen had shown up; under such desperate straits, a boy who was as warm as the morning sun had saved him.

People possess the will to live on.

Ren Jing…had wanted to keep on living.

Ye Chen was his last straw to clutch at.

Ye Chen had illuminated his dark life, brought light to him and given him a purpose to live for.

For fourteen years, Ren Jing had always been looking after Ye Chen. He watched everything Ye Chen did and used them to wash away the shadow hidden deep inside his heart.

People weren’t just made up of individuals like his father and mother, there were also those like Ye Chen.

The relations.h.i.+ps between people weren’t just made up of beating and abuse, there were also warm smiles and mutual love.

His mother’s death had made everything clear. Ren Jing’s grandparents deeply regretted their choice, but it was too late. They couldn’t bear the pressures of people’s opinion following the news of their daughter’s suicide—they had completely forgotten about Ren Jing.

Later, Father Ren suffered cancer, getting the death he deserved.

Ye Chen was truly all that Ren Jing had in this world.

Hearing his story brought tears to Ye Chen’s eyes. When Ren Jing was done, Ye Chen immediately glomped him as he cried his eyes out.

Ren Jing patted his back as he said, “Don’t cry, Chen Chen, don’t cry.”

Ye Chen couldn’t say anything. He really couldn’t imagine how Ren Jing had gone through all these years by himself and how he had endured all the hards.h.i.+ps on the way.

“I’m not the only one…” he said to Ren Jing as he was choking with sobs, “I’m not the only one you have… Ren Jing, my friend is your friend, my parents are also your parents, all of me is yours!”

Ren Jing’s eyes had also reddened. He hugged Ye Chen back, then said with an absolutely tender voice, “Thank you.”

Truly…really, thank you.

Ye Chen cried for a while before finally calming down.

He looked at Ren Jing, then said confidently, “There’s something I want to tell you.”

Ren Jing, “Mn?”

“You might feel that this is inconceivable, but it’s true, everything is absolutely true. If I told a lie, then I would be punished by—”

Without waiting for Ye Chen to finish his words, Ren Jing interrupted. “I believe it. I will believe anything you say.”

Not even ‘sweet’ or ‘honeyed’ could describe Ye Chen’s feelings right now.

He composed what he wanted to say and told Ren Jing what he had experienced all this while.

Being revived…Death System…various missions…and life points.

Hearing his story, Ren Jing was dumbfounded.

Whoever heard these things would probably react the same way he did.

Ye Chen finished saying everything in one breath. Then, he mentioned the main point of everything he had said, “Even though I had approached you because of the life point at first, I fell in love with you not long after!”

Just when Ren Jing was about to open his mouth, he suddenly knitted his brows. Then, a terrible sharp pain came into his head.

Ye Chen immediately sensed it. He promptly asked, “What’s wrong?”

Right at this moment, Death System’s voice resounded, “Congratulations for completing the compulsory mission. The truth is about to be unraveled, please be prepared.”

“The truth?” Ye Chen was confused, “What do you mean…”

The answer to his question was a lot of scenes that flashed through his mind as if he had experienced them himself.

He saw his dead self, saw Ren Jing who was on the verge of collapse, and heard Death System’s voice.

These were the scenes of the past. These were the truths he didn’t know.

As it turned out…this was how he was able to survive, as it turned out…this was how the life point was created.

Death System’s appearance was due to fate, but there were some extremely strict requirements for it to be able to bring Ye Chen back to life.

First of all…there must be someone in this world who regarded Ye Chen as their only one.

What did it mean by ‘the only one’? That person would only be devoted to no one but Ye Chen.

Not even his parents or relatives could fulfill this. It was only Ren Jing who could do so.

Death System had asked Ren Jing, “Are you willing to save Ye Chen using your own life? I could bring him back to life.”

There had to be no pause nor even a little hesitation in his heart when Ren Jing replied.

Ren Jing’s answer was absolutely perfect, “I am willing.”

The contract was made and Death System had revived Ye Chen. However, Ren Jing didn’t die yet, he still had one day to live.

Death System had told him, “I will erase your memory. You’ll forget about all this and Ye Chen will receive missions related to you. If he completes them, you’ll live for one more day. If he doesn’t do them, you’ll die on the next day.”

Ren Jing asked, “If I die, he’ll still be able to live well, right?”

Death System replied, “Yes.”

Ren Jing chuckled. “That’s good.”

Death System said again, “He’s not familiar with you and he doesn’t like you. He probably wouldn’t even do the first mission.”

Ren Jing said softly, “It doesn’t matter.”

Death System repeated, “You would die, and he wouldn’t even know that you had died for him.”

Ren Jing said, “Please don’t let him know about this.”

Death System, “Alright. I’ll start to erase your memory.”

Ren Jing didn’t remember anything. Ye Chen was revived—he was revived using Ren Jing’s life.

After witnessing the truths until this point, Ye Chen’s back grew cold with fear. He erupted, “Death System! Come out now!”

Death System said cheaply, “Isn’t this such a nice surprise? Isn’t this unexpected?”

Ye Chen had never roared with this much anger in his whole life. “So the life points are for extending Ren Jing’s life? If I didn’t do the missions, the one who would actually die is Ren Jing!?”

Death System replied, “That’s right. One life point will be deducted every day. If it dropped to zero, the one who would die is not you, but Ren Jing who had offered his life for you.”

The author has something to say:

Ah, I could finally write it out, so happy!

Was it unexpected? Were you surprised?

This is the most romantic part of the entire novel.
