Go home, Kate told him. Thats what Im going to do.

Okay, Tyler said. I guess Ill just say good-night, then.

He turned and left Kate standing with Annie. When he was gone, Annie said, I understand if you dont want to be my friend anymore.

Kate looked at her. Annies hands were pushed into the pockets of her coat, and she was s.h.i.+vering in the cold. Her hair was blowing around, and from time to time she pushed it out of her face before plunging her hand back into her pocket. Every time she did Kate looked at the white bandage wrapped around her finger.

Im really mad at you right now, Kate said. Really mad.

Annie nodded. Im mad at me, too, if that helps any.

It doesnt, Kate said. I just need to be mad.

Annie looked away.

But I wont be mad forever, Kate told her, and Annie looked back at her. Her eyes were wet.

Youre my best friend, Kate, she said. If I could take this back, I would. But I cant.

Kate shook her head. We shouldnt talk about this right now, she said. I need some time to cool off.

I just wanted to tell you that Im sorry about your hand and that I still really love you.

I love you, too, Kate, Annie whispered.

Kate breathed deeply. I think I need to be alone now, if thats okay.

Annie nodded. Well talk later? she asked.

Yeah, Kate said. We will.

Annie gave her friend one last long look and then turned and walked in the direction of the bus stop.

Kate watched her for a minute and then turned around. Leaning against the railing of the wharf, she stared out at the ocean. And she began to cry. But even as the tears fell, she knew that, inside, she was beginning to heal. It would just take time. How much time, she didnt know. But she knew that she would, and she knew that when it was over she would be stronger than shed ever been.

She sniffed the air. Suddenly she smelled smoke. Cigar smoke. Turning around, she looked to see if someone was walking along behind her. But there was no one there. Still, the smell was growing stronger. It surrounded her.

She reached into her coat and touched the string of green and black beads she was wearing beneath her s.h.i.+rt. Im glad you liked the presents, she said, and started walking home.

end.
