After seeing a movie or play, the two of them would enjoy tea at an open air cafe.
When strapped for money, they would have their own tea party at a park or bench.
They had Himeko’s and the Hinomiya family’s funds to back them up, however, money used for their personal enjoyment was not limitless and impossible to guarantee.
Himeko was still reeling in excitement and spoke about the climax of the movie they had just seen.
It seemed like she really liked the two lovers who had been torn apart by destiny.
Chikane watched Himeko attentively with a warm gaze.
Himeko’s hair shone red with the rays from the setting sun. It was truly beautiful.
At the outset, she looked like an artificial Western doll (a bisque doll) to her, despite the discomfort she felt for thinking that.
It wasn’t just her hair.
At first, the way she spoke was simply annoying, the clumsy way she carried herself was just irritating,
But she had come to think that anything and everything about her was adorable to the extent that it made her want to protect her.
It was really bizarre.
“So I thought that those two are somewhat like us.”
“Like us?”
“Yeah. Two people who meet and are attracted to one another despite carrying the burden of a fate that can’t be helped. We’re alike.”
Yes…Chikane mulled it over as she responded in the affirmative.
The protagonists in the movie, the two lovers, resemble us but they are different.
That’s because we…
We…
Inside of Chikane, “something” grew larger.
A dazzling radiance, a dull aching.
The shock was more than expected, causing Chikane to cast her eyes down involuntarily.
“Chikane-chan?”
Himeko peered into Chikane’s face in concern.
“I was just thinking.”
“Thinking?”
“Hey, Himeko. When you first mentioned the ‘most important person,’ what did you mean?”
It’s a question I’ve always thought about since long ago.
I’m not really just a playmate to you but, for your heart to be beating so hard, it would be over a boy in cla.s.s, for example.
Yet, why is it me?
“Yeah…you’re..right.”
Himeko thought it over again for a little while.
Himeko’s words were quite like if she was weaving fabric. Sometimes the patterns and st.i.tching would become sloppy but what was well understood was that she was trying to spin the most important thing eagerly and earnestly.
“But, once my 16th birthday comes along, I’d have to depart, right? No matter what. I couldn’t talk about it with anyone at all…even so, hiding it and smiling isn’t very fun and feels wrong to do to someone.
That’s why I always felt lost wondering what I should do because, even if I wanted to do it, I just couldn’t. But, one day, it hit me. Maybe it be would okay to ask the one who’s the ‘divine girl.’ She would understand the situation and, if we don’t end up fighting, it would also be useful for her.”
“That’s why…it was me.”
“I made a bet and prayed to G.o.d every single night, you know. Not for the future of the Hinomiya clan, nor the honor of the ‘divine girl’ or my life. There was only one wish I hoped he would grant me. And so, G.o.d properly took heed of that wish.”
Himeko continued to speak as if she was singing.
Someone many, many times prettier and much, much cooler than I imagined. Long limbs. Glossy hair. Large chest that’d make anyone jealous. And with white, soft skin.
And finally———
“Someone who’s very, very kind…with Chikane-chan.”
“Kind? Me?”
Chikane was surprised by the unexpected word she did not imagine.
Until now, she had been praised many times by the people who surrounded her for her strength and n.o.bility.
However, she had never even once been deemed as kind.
“Is it because I saved Himeko?”
Certainly, she had saved her from the “Kudara” but———that was…
“I think it’s a little different,” Himeko said.
It’s the cool way you did it. I love how it was like a knight who comes to the rescue of a princess.
“Chikane-chan listened to this selfish wish of mine. Therefore, Chikane-chan is the kindest person in the world. Kinder to me than my father, mother and G.o.d.”
Himeko smiled as she said that.
