Volume 3 Chapter 5

Narcissus Harbor IV [Crane Fafnir is the Kamiko of Light]

Crane Fafnir is the Kamiko of Light. (TL: It’s been awhile, so as a reminder “kamiko” is a mix of “G.o.d” and “child”)

The boy who lived as the son of a farmer in the southern countryside of the country, before suddenly inheriting the const.i.tution of the Kamiko of Light two years ago, and was raised as the trump card of the country.

Although his training was difficult, the boy Crane was proud he could protect his homeland. He felt that the fact that he could become a big pillar to support his country as the Child of Light was an honorable responsibility.

He couldn’t count how many times he had been blown away by the Law magic of the Professor Country, not to mention how many times he was knocked down by the training staff of the crusader Cross Legion general.

The rooms given to him at the temple were large, and the maids cared for it well, but sometimes Crane felt unsatisfied in his heart that he was not yet able to be a fighting force.

But, he still didn’t give up.

His goal was to become like the previous Kamiko of Light who was one of the “Five Heroes.”

The five warriors who once saved the world that fallen into the depths of despair.

Crane was proud to be a successor of one of them. That was why he worked so hard to become a capable Kamiko of Light that wouldn’t lose to the one from the previous era.

Actually, the growth of Crane was spectacular.

Originally the son of a farmer, Crane was a hard worker even in his early years with his father.

Instead of gaining all his muscle at one time, he simply increased his strength from the time he was under his father, and so he improved abnormally quickly. He was also blessed with talent in Law magic, and Crane’s way of fighting with both magic and a Bo staff was reminiscent of the style of his predecessor.

Remembering the acceptance he eventually gained from the General as well as the acknowledgement from various top martial artists, Crane smiled to himself while he rubbed his nose in embarra.s.sment.

In this way the boy named Crane Fafnir had been making efforts to become a new pillar for the Professor Country for two years.

The soil of the Professor Country was also a good place to train the spirit, and he had grown a personality that was considered perfect except on one point. (TL: so, he’s literally a ‘Gary Stu’ then?)

The Kamiko of Light is patriotic, devoted, didn’t overestimate his own strength, and is thought well of by the people of the temple of Light.

He is also clever and courageous, with a healthy mind and body, and he never forgot to show grat.i.tude.

Since he had such a respectable personality, he was considered a reliable existence to the Professor Country supported by four priests. (そんな彼だから人望もあり、四神官の支える教国にあって非常に頼もしい存在へと昇華していった)

So, when he had heard the report of the Demon King’s revival he was calmer than he expected.

Through prayers and rituals to the G.o.ddess Kurunea, they asked for a prophesy.

The G.o.ddess’s response that flew down said [support the Kamiko of Light and believe.]

Crane went to the ceremony chamber and while soothing the panicked priests, he then heard the announcement, [If you travel around the world while improving yourself and your comrades, then I will naturally open the road.]

Crane considered the words for a moment before agreeing and deciding to go on a journey as prophesied. Crane was sent off with as few people as possible, instead of being accompa

nied by the priests, the general, or his various teachers, because the absence of the Kamiko of Light could not be revealed to other countries.

And now after traveling to many various places, Crane had returned to the Professor Country after a few months. The reason was because of his own connection with the country, and also his friend Haruna the cleric who wanted to pursue a single girl.

In a corner of the Princ.i.p.ality metropolis Komamoi, also known as the City of Flowers, she met a girl named Justa. (TL: hmm, I may need to go back to change something in v2c11, as I wrote her as being a ‘flower girl’ rather than in the city of flowers)

And though it might violate the Adventurer’s agreement, Haruna said that she wanted to help the girl being hunted by the Princ.i.p.ality. The girl spoke about the “Rescue of the Republic,” which caught the attention of Rudius who also agreed to help distract her chasers.

Immediately after the first goal had been achieved, they no longer had a clear direction. Because Crane was also interested in the internal affairs of the Republic, he also decided to chase after Justa.

Losing sight of her in the Hana Flower Forest, being depressed by the words of the magic librarian at the Imperial capitol, and then eventually following her back to his home country.

That was why Crane had boarded the s.h.i.+p to go to Narcissus Harbor…

“Hooray~! It’s the laand!!” (Haruna)

“It’s just the docks, Haruna.” (Rudius)

“Ah well, that’s true.” (Haruna)

A large wooden ramp was laid between the dock and the s.h.i.+p. While still being rocked slightly by the waves, Crane watched the workers lower the s.h.i.+p’s anchor.

Haruna descended from the s.h.i.+p with the most energy, waving happily to Crane as her straight peachy hair floated in the wind. When he laughed and returned her wave from the s.h.i.+p, she smiled shyly.

“Eeeeeeeh! Ah, a seabird!” (Haruna)

“Don’t fall” (Crane)

‘I got it already-!’ With Haruna seeming to shout back with that kind of feeling in her expression, Crane released his hand from the edge of the s.h.i.+p.

Looking at Haruna, he felt she had the most guts among them. Even encountering a ridiculous monster, she was able to move forward. Even though the Empire was dangerous, she would stand in front; although this seemed to trouble Rudius.

The magic librarian had mocked them, but that was the first battle. He thought that next time they would beat him. He was comforted when he watched the recent training of Rudius.

Now, even if was against that “Power” from before, if it was all three of them they could probably be able to fight back

“What’s wrong Crane, aren’t you coming down?” (Rudius)

“Oh, Rudi. That’s right, I’m probably in the way of the s.h.i.+p’s unloading, so I guess I should move?” (Crane)

“Yeah.” (Rudius)

A fierce youth with a wild red mane of hair down his back.

Even though he was the prince of the Kingdom, his ability as a swordsman could be boasted as the top of the knights. Rudius Fossalena Grand Galea. (リュディウス・フォッサレナ・グランドガレア)

Ever since they met the “Power” he has been diligently swinging his swords. But recently he thought it might be enough with the sword alone, so he was beginning to be taught Law magic from the Professor Country by Crane.

It became possible for Rudius to enhance himself, strengthening his body as a swordsman in an unorthodox way.

This was a wonderful thing for the party’s strength, and because of that Rudius had been even livelier.

“It seems it was good to cross the ocean…Well, what do you think?” (Rudius)

“Is there some reason she needed to come to this country for the rescue of the Republic?” (Crane)

“In the first place her story about “rescuing the Republic” is worrisome.” (Rudius)

“…I was telling you Rudi. Even though the Empire swallowed the Republic, their treatment of the former nation is not bad.” (Crane)

“The people of the former Republic who were amba.s.sadors six months ago seemed to be living decently. They may be her enemy, but speaking honestly, I feel like there’s something else in the background.” (Rudius)

“In order to not think of it as vengeance, she says rescue?…But isn’t she only ten years old? Maybe she really thinks that way.” (Crane)

“Though doesn’t it seem as if the ten-year-old brat used words like ‘rescue’ as if it were imprinted on her?” (Rudius)

“…I wonder if that’s so?” (Crane)

There were many places where he could agree with Rudius’ opinion. However, the thought that the girl had been wholly manipulated was disturbing and too much for him to take in.

Aside from that, the skeptical opinions of Rudius helped Crane face the things in front of him many times.

The ocean breeze brushed against his cheeks.

“However, we won’t be able to confirm such things until we catch up with her. While on this journey Crane’s intuition had never been off. One by one, let’s crush each obstacle.” (Rudius)

“Thank you Rudi.” (Crane)

His concerns had increased.

Crane once again looked forward, hoping that the girl was honest and not twisted like a bent screw.

“What are you doing–? Let’s go–! *Ni-hii!” (Haruna) (TL: Ni = sfx for grinning, hii = sfx for a squeal, so basically a chuckle)

“I’m coming now!” (Crane)

Haruna shouted back at them loudly, wondering why Crane and Rudius ahdn’t left the s.h.i.+p yet. However, rather than her being angry, it was more of a teasing tone of voice. As proof of this, she was smiling happily.

“Well, let’s go Crane. I’m also curious about how quiet the Demon King’s Army has been recently. It’s my first time in Professor Country, and this is the first time Crane has set foot back here after learning about the existence of the keys. Perhaps even a new key besides the red and orange can be obtained here.” (Rudius)

“Ah, yeah. I’m a little worried about that girl Justa, but we also have our own goals to accomplish.” (Crane)

“That’s right.” (Rudius)

Rudius, who nudged him, went down the ramp first.

Crane was thankful for the existence of a best friend who would give him strength in such a straightforward way, although he would not say so aloud.

“…I do not need to do it all by myself.” (Crane)

To tell the truth, Crane had not had much sleep recently.

Of course there was when he would get up in the morning and train with Rudius, and of course there was Haruna who did not think much about hugging the young men in the group, but he had more problems beyond that. A few of these were also the same reasons why he did not immediately agree to chasing after the girl named Justa.

He couldn’t grasp any clues on the position of the Demon King’s Army. His journey required him to grow even stronger as they encountered even more opponents of strength. The expectations placed upon him as the Kamiko was a heavy burden. And all of this led to anxiety within himself.

Once suspicious he could not easily shake it off, and the pain in his heart was enough to make him want to flee. But still, he wanted to move forward, because of the appearance of Haruna who strove innocently as well as Rudius beside him who worked diligently to reach new heights.

“Well, what should we do now?” (Rudius)

“Shouldn’t we go to a tavern and gather information? I’m also hungry.” (Haruna)

“Yeah, I also thought about renting an inn, but…Oh, how about I go to the inn first, while you two head to the tavern?” (Crane)

The three people began walking towards the harbor town, waiting for Crane at the end of the pier. While pa.s.sing the occasional Cross Crusader Legion guard as well as the sailors who staggered under the weight of cargo and goods, they entered through a large stone archway into the center of the port city of Narcissus.

The main product of this vibrant marketplace is obviously seafood.

“Cheap, cheap goods-!”

“Come on o-v-e-r!”

“That young man there come get something fresh-!”

As Crane tried to continue the conversation he was interrupted early by the calling voices of their surroundings.

However, his proposal to split up was unexpectedly accepted easily.

“Okay–, then Rudi and I will go ahead and find us a seat!” (Haruna)

“Your enthusiasm is great. It will probably be crowded though, so don’t get lost alright?” (Rudius)

“Haha, I’m not a child so I’ll be fine. Well then, see you later.” (Crane)

After having laughed at Rudius, who shrugged lightly, and Haruna who smiled and smacked his arm Crane strode into the crowd alone.

Both sides of the main street of Narcissus Port were filled with stalls covered in colorful fabrics. The feeling of the stone beneath his feet was unique to the Professor Country. The stone pavement that surfaced the road had been crafted through the Law magic of the Crusader Cross Legion and was gentle on the legs. For the hospitable Professor Country and the pavement that felt carefully crafted to welcome people, Crane felt his heart warmed.

“Hey young man! …I think I’ve seen your face somewhere. Well then, would you like one for cheap?” (fish seller)

“Ahaha, then I’ll get a grilled one if you would.” (Crane)

“Which would you prefer, Sailfish or Pirahna Whet?” (fish seller)

“I’m sorry, but Sailfish please.” (Crane)

“Hahaha, it’s a joke.” (fish seller)

Being told this cheerfully by the middle-aged shop keeper, Crane accepted the skewer of grilled fish with an uncomfortable smile. By the way, Piranha Whet is a demonic beast of the sea, and is not really meant to be eaten. Naturally it wasn’t even found in the shop.

He felt like the shopkeeper’s casual manner was unique to the Professor Country.

This was his second time coming to Narcissus Port after the one time he had come as a child.

He remembered that the monsters around here were reasonably strong, and before becoming the Kamiko of Light they were not something he could fight.

Though what about now?

There was a little bit of apprehension, but he was confident that he could fight them with the friends he had now.

“I think that they are bright people.” (Crane)

He thought while eating the grilled fish.

He was standing now while being supported by his comrades.

It would be alright even if it were the monsters around here. At that thought to himself he involuntarily smiled. Although he doesn’t know if he can win against the Demon King right now, he believes that he has grown a lot since the beginning.

Going through the marketplace, he entered a residential area where there was a change in atmosphere. It was a well-kept alleyway, where red brick buildings stood out. The inn as well as a few weapon and armor shops should be around here.

He looked down the street and around his surroundings, where there were buildings that stood as tall as three stories high. There, he found the word “INN” written on one of the doors, and unconsciously his expression relaxed.

The town’s inn was a completely separate building from the bar. Some towns merge them together, but Crane remembered this one well. Feeling nostalgic about the place he had once stayed in during his childhood, he slowly opened the wooden door.

“h.e.l.lo-” (Crane)

Opening the door with a light greeting, it was a rather wide building with many four-seater tables. No receptionist was at the front counter. Only the chiming sound of a bell attached to the door echoed in response.

Looking around the inside of the oddly empty building, he eventually noticed the sillhouette of two people in the back right corner table. One of them was a girl with a bandanna over her hair and an ap.r.o.n giving her the air of a waitress. Thinking that she was probably an employee of the store, he was about to call out but they looked back and noticed him on the other side.

“Ah, welcome~!” (waitress)

“Sorry to bother you, I would like to have two rooms.” (Crane)

“Oh, it’s fine-! Since there aren’t many customers right now, onii-san has nice timing!” (waitress)

“That’s good.” (Crane)

The girl slid behind the counter on the right side of Crane, before filling in a ledger with something like a feather pen.

The girl slid behind the counter on the right side of Crane, before filling in a ledger with something like a feather pen. She seemed about the same age as Haruna, and with an eye of experience Crane thought the girl was more reliable than her. Though compared to Haruna any girl would surely seem more reliable.

“What about meals?” (waitress)

“Two in the evening and one in the morning.” (Crane)

“Alright, thank you very much! For three people, erm…with meals, will end up as 1,800 gold, though we need a 1000 of the gold paid in advance.” (waitress)

“Got it.” (Crane)

Pa.s.sing over the coins, two keys were given. (TL: gyah! I’ve been translating the currency as ‘gold’ this whole time, but according to this sentence these coins are silver, so I might have to go back and use ‘garde’ instead. What do you guys think?)

“The two rooms are at the back of the third floor. But, no matter what! Evening meals will go out whether you are here or not. I’ll throw it away if you don’t pick it up.” (waitress)

“Eh?” (Crane)

“It’s a joke. The food will cool down but we’ll keep it properly.” (waitress)

“Ahaha” (Crane)

As the girl grinned Crane laughed awkwardly, remembering something about this place. Many of the people in the Professor Country, especially those involved in business, joked often.

“Well then, I welcome the arrival of three guests!” (waitress)

“Yep” (Crane)

The girl bowed her head neatly before quickly returning to the back table. He considered going straight to the bar next door, but remembering the other customer in the place besides himself, he looked over at the other person. It was a young man who sat at the back table.

“…!” (Crane)

Unconsciously, Crane gasped.

This was the presence of a strong person. There was the tremendous yet dignified pressure that came from him. Crane also got a strange feeling from the well-used polearm next to the man, as he understood that while it both was, and was not, a magic tool.

The gears of fate moved in crazy new ways, bring together these warriors who were originally never supposed to meet. A young man who would never have visited this place were it not for a demon, and a boy who increased his desire to become strong by meeting that same demon. What would these encounters bring?

“Yep, you seem a little troubled–.” (waitress)

“…No, I’m just a little unhappy.” (young man)

“Such a thing…Oh? It’s the man from before.” (waitress)

“Ah, h.e.l.lo.”

Crane had naturally approached the table. He wanted to become strong. If he could learn something from this strong man, perhaps he will improve even more. He could not deny such reckless thoughts.

“Um, what are you doing?” (Crane)

“This person is called Desiree, but I didn’t know what he meant even after giving a description of person of interest, so he trying to drawing it for me.” (waitress)

“Ah, no. It’s not like I cannot draw it. This brush just doesn’t seem to work well and goes in strange directions. It seems like unnecessary lines will increase from this? The drawing of research materials has been thrown to subordinates more skilled in art I believe. Though, yes, in the past even I made drawings just like this.” (Desiree)

There was a sheet of paper on the table. Before looking at it, Crane stroked his chin in thought.

The young man rambled excuses about this and that. He certainly seemed to be a strong person, though one that was definitely hiding his power.

As for drawing a picture, Crane had his own thoughts. He thought it would be okay to lend a hand, rather than let the man become more melancholy.

“…A picture, is it?” (Crane)

“…Um…?” (waitress)

“Oh, I’m called Rain.” (Crane)

He introduced himself to the waitress again. The girl smiled and nodded. He didn’t want to be caught up by the Professor Country’s Temple of Light. It wasn’t a very good alias, but he thought it would be enough so the Temple of Light wouldn’t realize he was near the capitol.

“Rain, is it? Are you able to draw well?” (Desiree)

“I used to paint landscapes, and people as well.” (Crane)

“I see. Sorry, but could I trouble you to draw with a personal description?” (Desiree)

“I can do it this once.” (Crane)

The intelligent young man replaced his monocle and slightly nodded his head while presenting the paper. After receiving it, Crane froze.

“I wonder what this is. I can only see a circle with arms growing out of it.” (Crane)

“…Sorry.” (Desiree)

“What is this?” (Crane)

“It’s a demon. An oni wearing wooden clogs and a deep blue Kinagais.h.i.+, with long black hair and twisted horns.” (Desiree)

“I thought it was a radish with a beard. Hm? A Kinagais.h.i.+-wearing demon?”  (Crane) (TL: pft! Btw, the radish here is more specifically a Daikon)

With Desiree beaten down with the radish description, Crane took the brush in his place.

“I can’t believe it…” (Desiree)

While moving the brush smoothly, Crane muttered as he scavenged through his memory. After a few minutes, he called to Desiree and showed him what he drew.

“Was it something like this?” (Crane)

“That’s hiiiiiim, the &%# demoooooooooooooon!!” (Desiree)

“S-sir?” (Crane)

Crane could not keep up with the cry of Desiree, as a blue vein bulged on his forehead.

However, his thoughts again welled up.

Because the demon he had drawn on the paper was the “Power” itself that Crane had met in the Alfan Ranges.

The prophecy from that time. The words of the reclusive fortuneteller were rather unusual. Of clues to the Demon King, and of a “Power.”

That “power” itself was not a clue to the Demon King was it?

Crane could no longer ignore the questions he had for this man.

“Desiree?” (Crane)

“Sorry, I was upset. Thank you. I will pay, I just don’t have that much on hand—“ (Desiree)

“Instead, for the reward, could I ask you two things?” (Crane)

“Hm?” (Desiree)

Crane stopped Desiree who tried to take out his purse from his pocket, before saying,

“Please tell me about that demon. Also, if you don’t mind, would you tell me your story?” (Crane)

To those serious eyes, Desiree’s gaze changed.

No one would yet understand the direction this encounter would lead the ‘story.’
