Chapter 153 (Self Edited) – The Guild and the Monsters
Noon was the time when the adventurer guild was usually having spare time. The reason was simple. It was because there were almost no adventurers who came to the guild at that time. Although there were almost no adventurers, the number was still small to the extent that it could be said that they were free.
On the other hand, the guild was busy only in the morning and after the evening. In the morning, the guild was busy because they were giving request, and in the evening, the adventurers visit the guild to report the requests accepted.
Adventurer who handled the request across the day rarely came to report in the morning. Some of them might finish their requests early, so they probably came in the daytime. However, Fergau was a remote area, so that sort of thing was very unusual. It could be said that the guild was free in the daytime, but the bar might still be busy.
Originally, it was supposed to be that way, but today, it was different. In general, this place that was usually a deserted place, but it was full of adventurers. Well, that was obvious.
“Anyway, if we are going to sit silently there, they are definitely getting in the way because they’re just making noises about unexplained things.” (Emily)
“Don’t be absurd, alright. Well, I understand your feelings, but that is your job.” (Demonis Girl)
“I know, but…” (Emily)
Still, she said it because she was sympathetic toward her. They weren’t Human, but they were Demons though.
“Is it prevalent to torture yourself? Or are you trying to become popular?” (Demonis Girl)
“Is it not good? I don’t think anyone would definitely certain even if we are Demons.” (Emily)
“Stop it, just let it go. I mean, if you have time to talk nonsense, you better do your work. Don’t complain when you become busy, alright?” (Demonis Girl)
“I know that, but I can’t do this if I don’t complain once or twice…” (Emily)
Emily picked up one of the doc.u.ments while sighing. It contained the details of the request that had been or hadn’t been accomplished by the adventurers in this town until now. The receptionist would listen and summarized the information. In case of something had changed, she kept the doc.u.ment still because it might be useful later on.
Anyway…
“It’s unprecedented that the monsters suddenly disappeared, and it can’t be found anywhere.” (Emily)
The monsters had disappeared. Literally, it meant as it was, and that the information was delivered to the guild just a moment ago.
It didn’t happen at a specific place, but rather, the monsters had disappeared from all around the town. If it was informed by one or two people, she could say that it was a rumor. However, when everyone who received subjugation requests came back early and all of them said the same thing, then, it wasn’t a joke. In fact, when the guild tried to confirm that, they couldn’t find even a single monster.
Without thinking much, they thought that this was an abnormal situation. The reason why Emily became chaotic was because she was supposed to be working only as a receptionist and she only needed to separate doc.u.ments. Hence, she didn’t know how to deal with this situation.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard of them before.” (Emily)
“You’re right, but that you can’t decide that there’s no information, yes?” (Demonis Girl)
“Aah… I want to make a noise irresponsibly like the guys over there…” (Emily)
“That is very irresponsible, and by the way, they aren’t just making noises. That is probably because they don’t have source of income… or rather, that is for now.” (Demonis Girl)
“Well, that’s the way it is.” (Emily)
The fact that the monsters had disappeared seemed to be a good thing from the view of the town inhabitants, but it was actually not a good thing. At least, most of the adventurers were making money from the rewards of defeating monsters, including cas.h.i.+ng in the raw materials. If the source of income had disappeared, it wasn’t a level of troublesome anymore.
It would be a problem for the town to have no adventurers, and it would be the same for the guild as well. No, to be honest, the guild would have even worse problems if there were no monsters. Monsters were basically their source of income.
Although the guild was operated by the town management, they were making no profit at the moment. The guild must be good enough to the extent that the people employed could live. This was true especially for the Fergau branch, where it existed in a place that didn’t belong to any country. As long as there were no subsidies, they needed to make money by themselves.
But for the guild, the brokerage fees for requests were insignificant. In the first place, they also undertook requests from the town inhabitants, but most of them were odd jobs. There were few people who received it. If the reward was cheap, the brokerage fee was also cheap. There was no way they could survive by doing that alone.
Most of the profits that the guild made came from the sale of the raw materials. Moreover, that fact wasn’t only applied to the guild in this town, but also the guilds in other towns.
Of course, they sold the material to the craftsmen in this town, but the profits were small. If they tried to sell at a higher price, the craftsmen would try to buy it directly from the adventurers. Prices that far exceeded the material quality would only make them to be in a disadvantage situation.
However, it was another story when they tried to sell the material to other branches. The other branches would buy materials that they couldn’t obtain in their surrounding area. Although there was a limitation, there was no problem even if they overcharged the materials.
But then, if they did it too much, the other branches wouldn’t buy from them when they brought it there, and it would definitely be too expensive to be sold to the craftsmen in that location. Everything should be done in moderation.
Anyhow, it was a big deal that the monster had disappeared since that was how they could obtain profit. Thus, it was more difficult for the guild than the adventurers who were making noises, and that was the reason why they always worked hard when they had spare time.
“Whatever it is, I’m just a staff who plays hooky as always. I feel that this is very important… I mean, I have to convince myself to do this receptionist job, but I’m not sure anymore…” (Emily)
“All I was saying was it might be dangerous because the adventurers’ dissatisfaction might explode and it could be dangerous. However, I just want you to enjoy yourself no matter what they think. To be honest, you have some spare time to be a receptionist.” (Demonis Girl)
“I feel like I’m going to explode very soon.” (Emily)
There were a lot of adventurers there, but they were only making noises and nothing else. They had already received the information, and those who were going to do other requests were already on their way. Therefore, what the receptionist should do didn’t exist in the current situation.
Of course, this wasn’t the case if other adventurers came, but this commotion had started about two hours ago. Most adventurers would return here once, and those who didn’t return were giving priority to their requests. And they probably wouldn’t come back until the evening.
In other words, the subst.i.tute staff, who felt listless at the reception now, was doing Emily’s duty because of what was happening around her.
“Well, you’ll be rewarded soon. If you don’t accept it, you won’t be convinced, right? So, you have no choice but to pray for it.” (Demonis Girl)
“Hmm? Could it be that…?” (Emily)
The movement of the colleague, who had been staring at her, stopped unnaturally. Hence, Emily tilted her head. Emily thought that her colleague had done something, and when she raised her head from the doc.u.ment at hand, she turned her eyes to a certain direction.
That reminded her that she couldn’t hear the voices of the adventurers who were supposed to be making noises. At that moment, she could painfully understand her colleague’s current state of mind.
“Eh… what..?” (Emily)
Before anyone knew, the other side was a group of adventurers.
Currently, Emily was at the doc.u.mentation room on the third floor. She could see what was going on below, but on the contrary, if she didn’t want to see, she wouldn’t see anything happening down there. Therefore, if an adventurer came in, it wasn’t strange if she didn’t notice it.
Still, the ones who were there were those adventurers. Although she hadn’t confirmed their guild card yet, she was sure that person was called Soma by his companions…
“…Aah, I was quite surprised, but… that serves them right though.” (Demonis Girl)
“…You’re right.” (Emily)
The colleague was saying that because the temperature down there was too hot. Instead of going down there, there was no one wanting to subst.i.tute the receptionist. Everyone was like Emily, and they were busy investigating the situation.
It was understandable why they didn’t like it to be down there.
“I thought they were relieved when they received the reward once, but… you’re not going to see them, right?” (Demonis Girl)
“I don’t think that is the case, but… well, I’ll leave it to my replacement. Sometimes, I want him to work as a staff there.” (Emily)
“…I see. It doesn’t pay to work only at that time. So, let’s do our own thing here. For some reason, I feel like it would end in a senseless way.” (Demonis Girl)
That thought was understandable.
Emily was also thinking the same. Whether she knew or she didn’t know, she felt like those people would resolve this matter independently.
Then, she suddenly realized something. It went without saying that this was an abnormal situation. However, Emily didn’t have a sense of crisis in particular.
She was doing her job as per normal, even though she was complaining. It might be because she thought that necessary.
“Well, if there’s a problem, I don’t know if they will stay here until the matter is resolved.” (Emily)
“Isn’t that place where you can show your skill as the guild staff? Although you’re just a proxy here, you know what is going on there. Are you somehow trying to stay here?” (Demonis Girl)
“Aah, it seems like he’s desperately trying to explain something, isn’t it? I feel like I’m going to lose the sense of impending crisis though…” (Emily)
“Well, that is still the place where you can show your skill, you know.” (Demonis Girl)
If it worked really well, she might be able to write off all of the idling she had done so far.
While talking and thinking so, Emilia was doing her job for the time being. Even if she was concerned about the state of the downstairs, she proceeded to read the doc.u.ment she had in hands.

TLN:
- I’ve made two a.s.sumptions here. I’m not sure who is the other person, so I a.s.sume she was her best friend, the Demonis Girl. I also don’t know who replaces her at the reception. These two characters aren’t mentioned clearly.
