“How are you feeling?” Xiao Heng asked Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao shook her head gently and replied, "I'm fine. Let's head out first."
"Alright." This was not a suitable place for conversation. Xiao Heng carried the soundly sleeping Shangguan Yan out of the secret chamber.
Gu Jiao needed to return to her room to change into fresh clothes before coming back.
Gu Chengfeng was the last to leave.
He watched Gu Jiao’s slender, almost fragile figure, which somehow seemed to radiate endless strength. He couldn’t help but think of the secrets she carried—secrets he couldn’t begin to understand.
He opened his mouth and called out to her.
“Are you… a deity from the heavens?”
Gu Jiao paused mid-step, turned slightly, and looked down at the shadow on the ground. “Or perhaps just a demon.”
Gu Chengfeng froze in place.
This path was perilous. She could walk it alone. They all didn’t need to come any closer, and they didn’t need to make any more sacrifices.
“It doesn’t matter!”
Gu Chengfeng clenched his fists tightly, staring at her retreating figure. “Whether you’re human or ghost, deity or demon… it doesn’t matter.”
“You’re not afraid?” Gu Jiao stopped and asked him.
Her skills and knowledge were far beyond what anyone in this time could comprehend, making it easy for people to mistake her for a monster.
Gu Chengfeng felt a deep unease in his heart but refused to show it. “How could a demon possibly get hurt? And bleed the same blood as us?”
Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow. “Is that so?”
Gu Chengfeng coughed awkwardly. “Anyway, since my elder brother is injured, I’ll protect you from now on.”
Gu Jiao continued walking forward, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her lips. “Beat me first, then we’ll talk.”
Gu Chengfeng’s face darkened.
……
Gu Jiao first went over to Xiao Heng’s side to check on Little Jing Kong. The two little ones had played all evening and were now so exhausted that they had fallen sound asleep.
Since the Emperor had an episode of his chronic headaches and was resting in a side chamber of the Qilin Hall, the Little County Princess had also not returned to the imperial palace. The two little ones were sprawled on the bed, snoring softly in their sleep.
Gu Jiao bent down and gently touched Little Jing Kong’s forehead, then the Little County Princess’s, and softly said, “Thank you, Little Xue.”
If it hadn’t been for the Little County Princess unintentionally bringing the Emperor over ahead of time, buying an extra half hour to save Gu Changqing, by the time they finished dealing with the Crown Prince, Gu Changqing would already have been a cold corpse.
Although Gu Changqing was still not out of danger, at least there was now a chance to save him.
The Little County Princess, of course, couldn’t hear what her teacher was saying. She was sound asleep, her small mouth opening and closing as she happily snored away.
Gu Jiao returned to her own room, fetched some water from the side room, washed her hair and bathed, then changed into fresh, clean clothes.
Just as she finished tying her waistband, there came a soft knock at the door.
“It’s me.” Xiao Heng said.
Gu Jiao walked over and opened the door for him.
Having just bathed, she was dressed in loose sleepwear. It was late at night, and her black hair was casually wrapped atop her head with a cloth towel, though a stray lock of hair had escaped and hung loosely against her left cheek.
Her hair was as dark as ink, with water droplets clinging to the ends, as if they might fall at any moment.
Her skin was crystal-clear and delicate, and the red birthmark on her cheek was as vibrant as a blooming peach blossom.
Xiao Heng had come purely to check on her, but the scene before him was so striking that it left him momentarily stunned.
His breath caught, and his throat moved as he swallowed hard.
Gu Jiao looked down at her own collar, finding it securely fastened. There was no exposure at all.
Xiao Heng cleared his throat, forcing himself to regain composure. He held out a bowl of steaming ginger soup toward her, using the action to mask his awkwardness. “The kitchen just made this ginger soup. You got caught in the rain earlier; drink some to ward off a cold.”
“Oh.” Gu Jiao replied, reaching out to take the bowl.
“I’ll do it.” Xiao Heng said. Then, after a pause, he added, “May I come in?”
“Sure.” Gu Jiao said, stepping aside and gesturing for him to enter.
Xiao Heng carried the ginger soup into the room.
Gu Jiao had just bathed in the side room, and the air still carried the faint, refres.h.i.+ng fragrance of soapberry flowers mixed with her light, youthful scent.
Xiao Heng had to exert considerable self-control to keep his thoughts from wandering.
Gu Jiao pushed open the window. The rain had stopped by now, and the courtyard was filled with the moist, earthy scent of wet soil and fresh gra.s.s, creating a soothing and invigorating atmosphere.
“Drink the ginger soup.” Xiao Heng said.
“Alright.” Gu Jiao replied, walking over to sit on a stool. She picked up the bowl and drank the sweetened ginger soup in large gulps. “Did you add sugar?”
“You—” Xiao Heng’s gaze briefly swept over her flat stomach before he replied in an even tone, “Yes, just a little.”
Gu Jiao’s time of the month was approaching, though she hadn’t realized it yet.
“Oh.” Gu Jiao said softly.
And just like that, she remembered.
Xiao Heng pulled over a stool and sat down in front of her. “How’s your injury?”
Gu Jiao extended her hand. “It’s long healed.”
Her wounds healed quickly, and the area on her palm that had been torn b.l.o.o.d.y and raw by the reins had already scabbed over and shed, leaving no discomfort during surgery.
“And your legs?” Xiao Heng asked again.
During the day, her legs had been so weak she needed a wheelchair.
While it was true that a person could summon incredible strength in moments of crisis, the exhaustion and weakness afterward often hit twice as hard.
Gu Jiao looked at her legs, which had suddenly stopped cooperating, and frowned slightly. “I was fine until you mentioned it. Now that you bring it up, they do feel a bit weak.”
Xiao Heng didn’t know whether to be amused or exasperated.
He leaned forward, gently lifted Gu Jiao’s legs onto his own, and began to ma.s.sage them with his long, elegant fingers, applying just the right amount of soft, soothing pressure.
The ma.s.sage was so comfortable that Gu Jiao couldn’t help but narrow her eyes in contentment, like a little kitten being stroked into a sleepy yawn.
Xiao Heng glanced at her and chuckled softly. Something seemed to cross his mind, but he hesitated to speak.
Noticing his expression, Gu Jiao asked, “Do you have something you want to ask me?”
Xiao Heng thought for a moment and then nodded. “Yes… I do have some questions.”
“About the operating room?” Gu Jiao guessed.
“That’s right,” Xiao Heng replied.
Gu Jiao could more or less predict this. What she had demonstrated today was far beyond the understanding of this time and place. The fact that no one had questioned her on the spot was already a miracle. Gu Chengfeng, for instance, couldn’t hold back his curiosity when he entered the secret chamber for the second time.
But Xiao Heng was more composed and had managed to suppress his questions until now.
"What’s on your mind?" Gu Jiao asked.
Xiao Heng recalled overhearing Gu Chengfeng’s question in the corridor, about whether she was a deity. He said, “I almost believed you were a celestial maiden from the heavens, using divine techniques from the Nine Palaces of Cloud Realm.”
Gu Jiao chuckled. “What I used wasn’t divine magic—it’s called science.”
Xiao Heng blinked in slight confusion and looked at her. “Science?”
Gu Jiao carefully chose her words and explained, “The universe exists in multiple dimensions. Each dimension has its own s.p.a.ce. For all we know, a carriage might be speeding past us right now, but because of the difference in dimensions, we can’t see each other.”
Xiao Heng seemed to understand, but not entirely.
However, having read one of the national books of the State of Yan, which included knowledge that didn’t belong to this world, he was more receptive than Gu Chengfeng, who struggled to process such concepts.
“Can you tell me more?” His curiosity was insatiable.
“Of course.” Gu Jiao said. “Let me think about where to start.”
What separated them wasn’t just their ident.i.ties from two different worlds, but also the vastly different philosophies and scientific perspectives they had grown up with. Gu Jiao decided to start with the origin of the universe—the Big Bang theory.
She made an effort to avoid technical jargon, instead narrating the story like she was explaining a fascinating tale to a child. She painted a vivid picture of an extraordinary cosmic event in simple, easy-to-understand terms.
Even so, there were still many aspects Xiao Heng couldn’t immediately grasp, so he made a mental note to revisit them later.
Unlike those who dismiss things they had never seen, Xiao Heng was deeply intrigued by what Gu Jiao shared. Compared to the rigid essays of the imperial exams, her explanations sparked a genuine pa.s.sion in him.
“There are also people who don’t entirely agree with the Big Bang theory.” Gu Jiao remarked.
“What do you think?” Xiao Heng asked.
"Doesn’t really matter to me. I’m not interested anyway." Gu Jiao replied casually.
Xiao Heng: “...”.
If she could remember so much despite not being interested, what would happen if she were truly pa.s.sionate about it?

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
