“What’s wrong?” Han Lei asked, looking at him.
Han Ci furrowed his brow and continued, “At noon, Xiao Liulang should have been fleeing for his life while being pursued by Long Aotian. With both Long Aotian and Qi Xuan after him, how could Xiao Liulang have escaped completely unharmed? Something is wrong with Long Aotian! He must be the one who killed Qi Xuan!”
Han Lei was taken aback and exclaimed, “But he’s someone from the Crown Prince Estate! Why would the Crown Prince kill Qi Xuan?”
Han Ci clenched his fists tightly and replied with conviction, “Of course, the Crown Prince wouldn’t kill Qi Xuan. This Long Aotian is a spy! He approached the Crown Prince on purpose! Eldest brother, you must inform the Crown Prince immediately and have Long Aotian eliminated!”
……
At the Crown Prince Estate.
Gu Changqing was seated in a pavilion, playing chess with the Crown Prince.
The Crown Prince had just placed a white piece on the board when Gu Changqing’s black piece swiftly followed, cutting off the Crown Prince’s escape route.
The Crown Prince was astonished and exclaimed, “This prince never expected that not only are you skilled in martial arts, but your chess abilities are equally impressive!”
It was just some basic skills learned from my sister, but enough to beat you.
“How’s your injury?” The Crown Prince asked with concern.
“It’s just a minor wound, nothing serious.” Gu Changqing replied.
The Crown Prince let out a sigh, “This prince thought having you intervene would help the Han Family, but who would’ve thought Xiao Liulang’s luck would be so extraordinary!”
Gu Changqing responded, “It was my failure.”
The Crown Prince shook his head and said, "You’re not to blame for this. Even Han Ci was defeated by Xiao Liulang, it’s unlikely you could have gained any advantage against him either. By the way, about the task I gave you last time to investigate the ident.i.ty of this fake Xiao Liulang, how’s the progress?"
Gu Changqing’s expression remained unchanged as he said, “He’s very cautious. I haven’t uncovered much useful information.”
The Crown Prince frowned slightly and said, "I suspect only Nangong Li knew who this fake Xiao Liulang truly was. It’s a pity Nangong Li is dead."
If he hadn’t died, my sister’s ident.i.ty as Gu Jiao would’ve been exposed. His death is a blessing.
Gu Changqing responded calmly, “Your Highness, I can a.s.sa.s.sinate the former Crown Princess and the Eldest Imperial Grandson to clear obstacles for you. Please allow me to atone for my failures.”
The Crown Prince quickly raised his hand to stop him. “No, the situation is too sensitive right now. Let’s wait for things to settle down.”
The two resumed their chess game.
Suddenly, a guard hurried over and whispered a few words into the Crown Prince’s ear.
The Crown Prince’s brows furrowed. He waved the guard away and then turned to Gu Changqing. “I have some matters to attend to. Let’s continue our game another day.”
After speaking, the Crown Prince took his attendants and headed to the study.
Gu Changqing, on the other hand, returned to his courtyard.
Little Nine flapped its wings and landed on his windowsill.
It had only been brought here once but had memorized the location. Over the past few days, since it was inconvenient for Gu Changqing to visit Gu Jiao, Little Nine had been acting as the messenger between them.
He unfolded the note, which was written in Xiao Heng’s handwriting.
Seeing that it mentioned Gu Jiao had woken up and was recovering well, the heavy weight in his heart finally eased.
The note also bore two playful stamps, clearly the handiwork of Little Jing Kong.
The juxtaposition of this childlike imprint on Xiao Heng’s typically serious and meticulous writing made it easy to imagine the two of them—one big, one small—bickering with stern faces.
Gu Changqing couldn’t help but chuckle softly.
Knock, knock, knock.
A rapid and urgent knocking suddenly came from the door.
Gu Changqing clenched his large hand, channeling his internal force to turn the note into fine powder, which he scattered out the window before saying, “Come in.”
With a creak, the door was pushed open.
It was the little mute servant from the courtyard, bringing him his meal.
The little mute, no more than ten years old, was still just a child. Gu Changqing had saved him by chance from the clutches of the Crown Prince’s steward, and since then, the boy had followed him loyally.
The boy placed the food box on the table and gestured anxiously to Gu Changqing.
Gu Changqing didn’t understand at first. “I’ve taught you to write before. Can you write it out?”
The little mute grabbed a writing brush, scratched his head, and thought hard for a long while before awkwardly scribbling crooked and incomplete words on the paper——danger.
After a moment of contemplation, Gu Changqing asked, “Are you saying there’s danger in the Crown Prince Estate?”
The little mute nodded vigorously, pointing urgently toward the door and then running a few steps in haste.
This time, Gu Changqing understood. The boy was telling him to escape quickly.
Gu Changqing stood up, grabbed the treasured sword from the table, and rushed out the door.
But just as he stepped over the threshold, a gleaming sword came straight at him, piercing through his chest with a sickening thud!
Gu Changqing's body stiffened completely, his expression frozen in shock as he stared at the shadowy man before him.
The man was dressed in a black robe and cloak, his face obscured in darkness, revealing only a pair of eyes that gleamed with a chill sharper than any sword.
The man’s longsword thrust deeper, piercing straight through Gu Changqing’s chest.
Then, with a cold and detached motion, the man withdrew the blade, the blood that sprayed out deflected with a flick of his sword.
Gu Changqing collapsed to the ground like a puppet whose strings had been cut, his body falling limply.
The little mute servant was so terrified that he didn’t dare to move.
The man didn’t spare the servant a glance, only turning to the guards rus.h.i.+ng over and ordering, “Dispose of the body.”
“Yes!”
The guards responded promptly. One of them crouched down and reached out to feel Gu Changqing’s neck, confirming that he was indeed lifeless.
The Crown Prince Estate could not tolerate the presence of an ominous corpse. The guards fetched a dilapidated cart, tossing Gu Changqing’s body onto it.
A low rumble of thunder echoed across the sky that had been stiflingly hot all day.
It seemed rain was imminent.
The guards covered the corpse with a straw mat and exited through the back gate of the Crown Prince Estate.
Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed across the heavens. On the way, they pa.s.sed many hurried pa.s.sersby, all seeking shelter from the impending rain.
“Ugh, what bad luck. Why is it always the two of us?” One of the guards pulling the cart grumbled.
The other guard, trying to lighten the mood, said, “Well, at least it’s a change of scenery. Don’t you get tired of being cooped up in the residence all day?”
“But we’ll have to head to the ma.s.s grave soon. That place is full of rotting corpses. Sometimes you even see severed limbs. And if our luck’s bad, we might catch some disease and bring it back.”
“You’re making me nervous now.”
About half an hour later, they arrived at the ma.s.s grave, a place reeking of death and decay. Most of the bodies here weren’t buried properly but simply discarded on the ground.
The stench carried by the breeze was nauseating. Shadows danced under the swaying trees, the cawing of crows adding an eerie chill to the air.
“Let’s toss it and get out of here! This place is creepy as h.e.l.l!”
“Fine, let’s leave it here. No need to get too close.”
The two guards stopped the cart near the ma.s.s grave.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
