Hearing the Emperor’s question, the Imperial Advisor simply answered, "It's hard to say."
The Emperor looked at him curiously, "Why?"
The Imperial Advisor replied, "Each of them has their strengths. Without knowing the rules of the final round, I can't make a definitive judgment."
The Emperor walked to the window and gazed at the endless purple bamboo grove, speaking lightly, "Feng Wuming and Jun Xiuhan come from Canaan Academy. Although Feng Wuming has become a Taoist priest, all his knowledge of military strategy and tactics was learned before he took vows. Your Canaan Academy places great emphasis on the study of military strategy."
The Imperial Advisor's expression remained unchanged. "Canaan Academy has produced six top scholars in the civil examination and four in the military examination. It has not only cultivated many outstanding military talents for the Great Yan but also provided the court with numerous brilliant scholars."
The Emperor smiled faintly. "Zhen never said that was a bad thing. But how did that Xiao Liulang end up as Duke An's adopted son? Zhen heard it was you who mediated this. What was your intention, Imperial Advisor?"
The Imperial Advisor said, "There was no deeper intention. I simply saw great potential in him."
"Why the Duke Estate then?" The Emperor asked suspiciously.
The Imperial Advisor met the Emperor’s scrutinizing gaze and spoke unhurriedly, “He treated the Crown Princess and even stole credit for saving the Little County Princess. He has long been a thorn in the side of the great n.o.ble families. Apart from the Duke An Estate, I can’t think of anyone else bold enough to take on this hot potato.”
The Emperor averted his gaze and continued admiring the purple bamboo grove, "How is Duke An’s condition?"
The Imperial Advisor replied nonchalantly, “Not well. He can’t speak or move his legs. His life will remain this way; Your Majesty need not trouble yourself over him.”
The Emperor snorted coldly, “Humph, just a Duke An! Not worth Zhen’s concern!”
The Imperial Advisor said nothing more.
Silence enveloped the room.
Suddenly, the Emperor burst into laughter. The Imperial Advisor looked at him curiously as the Emperor, now at ease, said, “Zhen knows how to conduct the final test. Bring me a writing brus.h.!.+”
......
The Little County Princess spent a delightful and enchanting evening in the Qilin Hall, completely forgetting about returning to the palace.
When the Emperor pa.s.sed by Qilin Hall, he saw Zhang Dequan loitering outside. His brows furrowed, “Why are you here? Didn’t Zhen send you to fetch the Little County Princess?”
Zhang Dequan awkwardly pointed to the entrance of Qilin Hall.
Two little ones were squatting on the ground, engrossed in building sandcastles.
The Emperor: “...”
The Emperor picked up the Little County Princess and placed her in the carriage. "Didn’t I tell you to stay obediently in the palace? Why are you running around again?"
The Little County Princess fidgeted with her fingers. "I-I-I came to find imperial uncle."
Then why didn’t you look for me? If I hadn’t come to get you, wouldn’t you have played with that boy until dawn?
Feeling guilty, the Little County Princess blinked and scooted closer to the Emperor, shamelessly flattering him. “Imperial uncle , you look especially handsome today.”
The Emperor: “Ha!”
The Little County Princess continued to cling to him, deploying her ultimate cute charm. “Imperial uncle, I like you the most!”
The Emperor: “Humph!”
Someone who claimed to like her uncle the most was suddenly drawn to the small bamboo tubes in the Emperor’s hand. "Huh? What are these?"
Apparently, the bamboo tubes were more interesting than her imperial uncle.
The Emperor: “...”
The little one’s eyes widened, her mouth opened, and she was practically drooling.
She was reminded of the bamboo rice she had eaten tonight—handmade by her teacher, filled with honey dates and red beans. It was fragrant, sticky, and delicious without being greasy.
The Emperor watched her drool cascade like a waterfall and twitched at the corner of his mouth. "These are test questions, not food."
The little one immediately distanced herself from the test questions.
Straightening her small body, she declared seriously, “I don’t want to take any tests!”
The Emperor found it both amusing and exasperating. "They’re not for you—they’re for your teacher and the others."
Six people, six test questions, each with a different task. Moreover, they wouldn’t know about each other’s tasks, which would result in a disparity of information.
They wouldn’t even realize how they lost.
This wasn’t a simple 300-mile ride; it was a strategic battle of wits.
Reaching the finish line first wouldn’t necessarily make someone the ultimate winner. The key to victory lay in who could gather all the information first.
Unfortunately, none of them would antic.i.p.ate this aspect.
They would simply rush forward, sparing no effort to reach the end.
The Emperor thought himself a genius for devising such a cunning a.s.sessment method.
A test question for her teacher? The Little County Princess twiddled her fingers and rolled her eyes mischievously.
In a soft, sweet voice, she said, “Imperial uncle, I need to go potty!”
The Emperor frowned. “Now? We’ve already left the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.”
"I can’t hold it!" She puffed out her cheeks, her face turning red as she insisted.
The Emperor warned, "Don’t be naughty. Don’t lie just to play around."
The Little County Princess instantly turned into an indignant little chick, “I’m not lying! I’m not going to play! Imperial uncle, you’re falsely accusing me! I’m so sad!”
The Emperor was momentarily stunned. The little one looked as if she had suffered the greatest injustice in the world, making it seem like he had truly wronged her.
The Emperor cleared his throat and instructed Zhang Dequan, “Return to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall first.”
“Ah… yes.” Zhang Dequan replied, directing the coachman to turn the carriage back to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.
The Little County Princess raised her chin and made a request, “I want to go to Qilin Hall to use the potty.”
The Emperor’s face darkened, “And you still claim you’re not going to play.”
The Little County Princess argued confidently, “Qilin Hall has a little potty.”
The Emperor: “...”
You really are a demanding one.
The Emperor had the carriage stop outside Qilin Hall.
“I’m going to take a very, very long time.”
“If you want to play, just say it.”
“I’m not playing.”
The Emperor: “Zhang Dequan.”
The Little County Princess chimed in, “I want imperial uncle to accompany me.”
The Emperor placed the small bamboo tubes into a hidden compartment in the carriage, then took the Little County Princess by the hand and got off the carriage with her.
“I forgot something; I’ll get it myself!” She climbed back onto the carriage, panting as she secretly opened the hidden compartment and stuffed the bamboo tubes into her book bag.
The Emperor asked, “Why are you taking your book bag to the restroom?”
The Little County Princess replied, “I have something for Jing Kong.”
“You really just want to play.” The Emperor led her into Qilin Hall. “Do you think Zhen can’t see through you?”
The restroom at Qilin Hall was clean and tidy, far from an ordinary outhouse.
At the door, the Little County Princess held out a small hand to the Emperor, making a stop gesture. "Alright, I’ll go in by myself. Imperial uncle, wait for me here!"
The Emperor couldn’t help but laugh.
The Little County Princess entered the restroom, locked the door, climbed onto a small stool, and perched on the windowsill. In a hushed voice, she called out, “Little Nine, Little Nine.”
Little Nine flapped its wings and flew over.
The Little County Princess poured out the six test questions with a flourish.
“Aiya, so many! Which one is teacher’s? I… I can’t read! I’ll just take them all!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
