Mu Qingchen's expression showed a hint of fatigue, perhaps due to being affected by the recent events involving the Mu Family.
His face didn’t show much surprise. It wasn’t that he had expected Gu Jiao to come but rather that he had seen her during the selection process earlier.
He didn’t ask why Gu Jiao had appeared here, as his instincts told him she wouldn’t provide an answer.
Looking at her with a complex expression, he said, “I’ll do my best.”
Gu Jiao replied, “So will I.”
At that moment, a soldier approached, taking the reins of both Gu Jiao and Mu Qingchen's horses to lead them to the stable for feeding.
Mu Qingchen handed his horse over to the soldier without hesitation.
Gu Jiao, however, interjected, “My horse doesn’t need to be fed.”
The soldier explained earnestly, “The weather is hot, and the horses are expending a lot of energy. Without timely replenishment of water and food, they could easily become dehydrated.”
Gu Jiao still insisted, “I know, but it doesn’t need it.”
The soldier opened his mouth, seemingly wanting to say more, but before he could, Mu Qingchen spoke, “Take the horse away.”
“Ah, yes.” The soldier led Mu Qingchen’s horse away.
When the soldier arrived at the stable with the horse, two elegantly dressed men approached. One had a clean-shaven face, and the other sported a goatee.
The clean-shaven man asked, “Why didn’t you bring it over?”
The soldier reported, “Master Dong, that fellow said his horse didn’t need feeding.”
“Heh, what did I tell you?” Master Dong sneered as he glanced at the goateed man beside him. “Old Yang, now do you believe me? That lad isn’t just a brute; he’s cunning and vigilant. He won’t be easy to deal with.”
Old Master Yang frowned and asked, “Who is that youth exactly?”
Master Dong smirked and replied, "He’s a student of Tianqiong Academy, a citizen of the State of Zhao, and a cla.s.smate of Mu Qingchen. The masked man in white who s.n.a.t.c.hed the Little Country Princess from us that day—I suspect it was Mu Qingchen himself."
Old Master Yang, still skeptical, asked, "Why would Mu Qingchen do that? Isn’t he Old Master Mu’s grandson? Why isn’t he siding with the Mu Family?"
Master Dong smiled faintly, “Perhaps the Su Family has its own plans. Who can say for sure?”
Old Master Yang appeared thoughtful and remarked, “Since he isn’t a State of Yan’s citizen, it’s likely he a.s.sumed the ident.i.ty of a collateral family member to partic.i.p.ate in the selection this time. Could his goal be to help Mu Qingchen eliminate compet.i.tors?”
Master Dong nodded in agreement, “That’s highly likely.”
......
Meanwhile, both Gu Jiao and Mu Qingchen had finished drawing lots.
Inside the camp tent, neither of them exchanged any information.
After exiting, Mu Qingchen hesitated briefly before calling out to her, “I got Earthly Branch.”
Gu Jiao responded, “What a coincidence. So did I.”
Mu Qingchen’s breathing hitched slightly, “Ninth Shen.”
Gu Jiao said, “Eighth Wei. I’m in the round right before yours.”
Hearing this, Mu Qingchen let out a quiet sigh of relief.
For some reason, he found himself unwilling to face Gu Jiao as an opponent.
Even though it was inevitable, he still hoped that their confrontation could be delayed—later, and even later.
While they were drawing lots, cavalrymen from the top ten n.o.ble families were taking the field one after another. The Han Family sent out nine compet.i.tors. Aside from Han Che, who had been eliminated by Gu Jiao, the other eight all advanced.
Everyone marveled at the terrifying strength of the Han Family’s Black Wind Cavalry horses.
However, Gu Jiao didn’t see this as evidence of the Han Family’s greatness. The Black Wind Cavalry had been seized from the Xuanyuan Family, and even the training methods used to tame these horses were pa.s.sed down from the Xuanyuan Family.
The Han Family was merely feasting on the Xuanyuan Family’s legacy.
Gu Jiao lost interest in watching and decided to go back to feed the Black Wind King.
“I’m heading off. See you in the next round.”
Just as she was bidding farewell to Mu Qingchen, a chill ran down her spine. A terrifying killing intent swept across the field from the other side, overwhelming everything in its path and instantly blanketing the entire arena.
The horses on the field became restless, and even the steeds in the midst of competing staggered slightly, losing their focus.
What an overwhelming presence!
The only unaffected horse was likely the Black Wind King.
“Ah—!”
A horse attempting to leap onto the high platform suddenly froze mid-air, failing to make it and cras.h.i.+ng to the ground with its rider.
The rider let out a cry of alarm.
Both Gu Jiao and Mu Qingchen turned toward the source of the powerful presence.
A silver-haired man, mounted on a chestnut warhorse, was approaching unhurriedly. His movements were graceful and composed, yet every step radiated an aura of undeniable authority, exuding the commanding presence of a king that silenced the battlefield.
The silver-haired man appeared quite young, around twenty-eight or twenty-nine, certainly not yet thirty.
As for the horse he was riding, Gu Jiao couldn’t determine its exact age, but she could sense that it was a young and vigorous steed.
Mu Qingchen’s expression grew serious, “It’s the Han Family’s new Black Wind King, six years old this year. The rider is Fifth Master Han, the legitimate son of Old Master Han. He has spent recent years focusing on developing and training the Han Family’s own line of Black Wind Cavalry horses.”
Gu Jiao looked at Mu Qingchen, “Their own Black Wind Cavalry horses?”
Mu Qingchen glanced at her and said, “Fifth Master Han once claimed that the Black Wind Cavalry horses trained by the Xuanyuan Family weren’t the best warhorses in the world. He vowed to use his own methods to raise even stronger Black Wind Cavalry horses. The new Black Wind King he rides is the result of his efforts.”
“Oh.” Gu Jiao touched her chin and carefully observed the man and horse in the distance.
Mu Qingchen spoke with a serious tone, “I know your Black Wind King is strong, but… I’m afraid it’s no match for that horse.”
Fifth Master Han’s new Black Wind King wasn’t just younger but also more agile and swift. Its explosiveness, stamina, speed, and strength were flawless.
After a brief pause, Mu Qingchen added, “It also has a name.”
Gu Jiao asked, “What name?”
Mu Qingchen hesitated for a moment before saying, “Black Demon Horse.”
The Black Demon Horse entered the field.
It was in the center lane, but before the starting gong even sounded, the horses on the adjacent lanes were already too terrified to move.
Two other horses forced themselves to charge forward but made frequent mistakes. They didn’t even make it past the fire bridge and were eliminated.
Unsurprisingly, Fifth Master Han advanced.
Mu Qingchen watched the invincible Black Demon Horse on the high platform with a slight frown, “Your Black Wind King took seventeen breaths to go from the starting line to the high platform. Fifth Master Han’s Black Demon Horse only took twelve.”
In such a short distance, the Black Demon Horse was a full five breaths faster than the Black Wind King!
That was like a 110-meter hurdle race where the first place finishes five seconds ahead of the second place.
Mu Qingchen said, “I know your Black Wind King didn’t go all out, but neither did Fifth Master Han’s Black Demon Horse. Moreover, Fifth Master Han is highly skilled in martial arts… You don’t stand a chance. If you face the two of them next time, I hope you can choose—”
“To fight, of course.” Gu Jiao interrupted.
Mu Qingchen’s brow furrowed.
Did she misunderstand his meaning?
Gu Jiao mounted her horse, gripping the reins tightly, and exchanged a distant gaze with Fifth Master Han, who sat atop the Black Demon Horse on the high platform.
Fifth Master Han’s eyes were filled with disdain.
Gu Jiao felt the Black Demon Horse’s provocation, but she also sensed the Black Wind King’s strong fighting spirit.
She straightened her back, her gaze resolute as she declared firmly, “I will fight, and so will the Black Wind King!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
