“Here, return the snakeskin bag first. I’ll pick more,” Zhang Chunxiang said.
“This… so many of them? There’s plenty to eat. I can’t finish it,” Su Pingping replied.
“What do you know? If you gather more, you can sell them in town and earn some pocket money,” Zhang Chunxiang said happily. She took the spare bag which was carried by Su Pingping and sent her away before resuming her vegetable pilfering.
The eggplants and cowpeas were gone, but there were still tomatoes. Zhang Chunxiang had claimed them. The girl’s tomatoes were large and ripe, even better than those sold in the market. They were of good quality since the village tomatoes were not growing well without a plastic greenhouse, resulting in small, sour fruits.
Zhang Chunxiang couldn’t help but wonder how the girl managed to grow such perfect vegetables.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Zhang Chunxiang was happily pilfering vegetables, while Su Wen was plagued by insomnia. Tossing and turning in bed, she couldn’t find comfort. Besides, it was almost autumn in September, and after the rain, the temperature had plummeted. The mat beneath her was cold, and the blanket she had wasn’t warm enough.
However, Su Wen was too lazy to move. She endured the discomfort, hoping to hold out until daytime to change her summer sleeping mat.
Procrastination was Su Wen’s weakness. When it came to others, she managed her tasks efficiently to avoid inconveniencing them. But when it was her matter, she delayed it as much as possible, like waiting until the middle of the night to change her sleeping mat.
Feeling too lazy to move, Su Wen wrapped herself in a blanket like a coc.o.o.n. Her mind was filled with the face of a person.
He was undeniably handsome, no matter how she looked at him.
Heavens! Could there be such a charming man in the world? And he belonged to her.
Su Wen gained her self-consciousness. She was infatuated with someone, yet she couldn’t let go of her pride and self-esteem.
At this crucial moment, fear overtook her.
Su Wen was speechless. She was pa.s.sionate but lacked the courage. Alone in bed, she rolled around, attempting to banish that person from her thoughts. In the middle of her struggle, she faintly heard a noise coming from the window at the back of the room.
Su Wen was startled, she quickly got out of bed, wrapping herself in a blanket. She grabbed a flashlight from the bedside table and turned it on. Slowly, she moved toward the back window.
Except for the main hall, every other room in her tiled-roof house had front and back windows. During the summer, when the windows were open, the cool breeze from the north and south was very refres.h.i.+ng. This was how Su Wen spent her summers. There was no air conditioner or electric fan, yet the nights were not uncomfortably hot.
Tonight, Su Wen wanted to enjoy the coolness. The air was infused with the scent of gra.s.s on a rainy day, so she didn’t close the window. Standing in front of it now, she could hear faint rustling sounds coming from the vegetable garden behind.
That was the private plot of land Su Wen’s family had set aside. After the land was divided, it had all been transformed into a vegetable garden. Su Wen planted many of her favourite vegetables there.
Could there be a thief?
There were quite a few incidents of theft case in the countryside. In the village, it wasn’t uncommon to hear about stolen onions or missing hens. Such incidents were ordinary, and catching thieves was a challenging task.
One would have to accept their misfortunes if their things were stolen.
Su Wen swiftly changed out of her pyjamas and went to Su Qing, Su Xiu’s room next door with a flashlight. She knocked on the door, waking them up.
“What’s wrong, big sister?” Su Qing asked, rubbing her eyes and yawning.
“I suspect someone stole our vegetables,” Su Wen whispered.
Su Qing’s drowsiness vanished in an instant. “Then…. What should we do? Should we catch the thief?”
