Chapter 281: Continue Making Up
Su Wen smiled in response to Little Sister Su’s enthusiasm. She could see Zhou Hengyang’s mocking smile from the corner of her eye.
‘Hah! Laugh at me all you want,’ she thought, ‘you can’t support me even if you wanted to!’
“Alright, I’ll hold you to it. I can’t wait for you to grow up and support me.”
“Ahem.” Zhou Hengyang cleared his throat and said, “Little Sister Su, I think it’s only right that I support my wife.”
“But…” Little Sister Su tilted her head as if she could not understand what Zhou Hengyang was saying.
Having exhausted her patience, Sixth Sister hissed, “That’s enough. Don’t embarra.s.s yourself further. If you’re full, put your dishes in the sink.” Little Sister Su pouted but did not dare talk back to Sixth Sister.
Zhou Hengyang suddenly shot to his feet and looked outside, his stern gaze piercing through in its intensity.
“What’s wrong?” Su Wen, who had already eaten and was about to go for a walk, asked, coming to stand by his side.
Zhou Hengyang turned to his wife playfully, saying, “Here comes the trouble you said you weren’t afraid of.”
“Already?” And she had thought it would be a peaceful day… so much for that.
Sure enough, several people rushed to the house. In the lead were Chen Guihua and Zhang Chunxiang. It was well known that they did not share a good relations.h.i.+p, so it was a surprise to see them together.
“Su Wen.”
“Little Wen, come out.”
“Oh my! Were you having dinner? Why would you be eating so early? It’s not even dark yet!” Zhang Chunxiang cried dramatically.
Su Wen motioned for Su Qing and the others to continue their meal. She led the two to the away with a fake smile. “It’s just as Second Aunt says. We aren’t wealthy, so we can’t afford to buy a kerosene lamp or too many candles. Hence, we tend to eat dinner before dark to save money.”
“You’re in trouble now. I don’t believe you’re penniless.”
Chen Guihua concurred, saying, “That’s right. I don’t believe it, either. You’ve been making steamed cakes. How can you not have any money? I’m sure you earn more than He Yulan.”
“No, no. I honestly don’t have any money. If Hengyang didn’t go to the city to find work at a construction site, we’d all have starved to death.
Lying on the roof, Zhou Hengyang felt his mouth twitch involuntarily, and he shook his head.
Su Wen was really good at making things up.
To think she would even come up with something like that.
“It was the only job Hengyang could find. He’s been moving bricks and doing odd jobs for the foreman.” Zhou Hengyang’s expression grew solemn. “He’s been working himself to the bone because there’s so much compet.i.tion from migrant workers. He’s had no choice but to work twice as hard to keep his job.” Zhou Hengyang was speechless.
Hadn’t she said enough? Why was she building such a complicated narrative?
Yes, he was a black-bellied man, but the sewing machines that Changhe
Machinery Factory produced were sold in almost all the shops in the county. Yet, she still had the cheek to make it sound like he was being worked to the bone.
“Su Wen, don’t bother shedding those crocodile tears. If you say you’re poor, can you be poorer than me?” Chen Guihua looked supremely proud of her achievement, even though it was, perhaps, the worst achievement anyone could have accomplished.
She was so poor that she had to return to her parent’s house to borrow money, yet she made it sound like it was something to be proud of.
“Little Wen, we’ve made an effort to visit you. How can you not invite us into your house? Are you going to make us stand outside while we talk?” Zhang Chunxiang had learned her lesson. This time, she put on the airs of an elder, believing Su Wen could do nothing if she maintained her sense of familial superiority.
Su Wen did not mind letting Zhang Chunxiang into the house, but the same could not be said of Chen Guihua. The last time the latter visited, she had played a dirty trick on them. Who knew what she would do if given leave to enter the house?
Thus, Su Wen picked up a few stools and placed them in the courtyard. She then invited the few people who came with Zhang Chunxiang to sit down.
She neither mentioned the possibility of them entering the house nor offered them any refreshments.
Zhang Chunxiang gritted her teeth, enduring the insult. It would all be worth it if she got her hands on the recipe to make those delicious steamed cakes..
