Chapter 185: The Third Family Meeting

Little Sister Su returned with a topped-up bowl of rice. Sensing the strange atmosphere, she eyed her older sisters curiously. Had her Second Sister and Third Sister said something bad about her?
While her intuition said ‘yes,’ she had no evidence to support her thoughts.
“Big Sister? Why aren’t you eating?” Little Sister Su asked, feeling uneasy.
Su Wen’s lips curled. “I’m full. Let’s go for a walk after you’ve eaten your fill. We’ll sleep early tonight.”
“Okay.”
Once Little Sister Su was full, Su Qing and Su Xiu got to work. One washed the dishes while the other cleaned the house. Su Wen tidied up the kitchen, storing the leftovers away and checking their supply of daily necessities, including oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar.
Meanwhile, Little Sister Su went to feed the chickens.
The Su family reared a dozen chickens, and Little Sister Su was in charge of feeding all of them. Under her expert care, the chickens laid dozens of eggs each day. Previously, their family had relied on these eggs to exchange for oil and salt. However, that all changed when Su Wen turned over a new leaf. Since then, the quality of their lives improved.
When they were done, the four sisters walked around the front and back of the house together, weeding the small plot of land they owned, and paid for some eggplants they bought from a neighbor. The sky had grown dark by then. They returned from their walk refreshed and enjoyed a relaxing shower before gathering in Su Wen’s room.
“Ahem!” Su Wen cleared her throat. “I hereby declare the third family meeting… Open!”
The eyes of her three younger sisters lit up, and they were just short of clapping.
In their first family meeting, their eldest sister showed them how to earn money by making sleeve guards. The second family meeting saw them learning how to make steamed cakes. Those two things were enough to improve the quality of life they lived. Now, they did not need to go hungry and even got the opportunity to eat eggs and meat every day.
The three sisters had changed greatly. Their hair was no longer dry and yellow, and their skin had become much fairer. Sometimes, when Su Qing looked in the mirror, the person she saw staring back at her seemed quite unfamiliar.
“Big Sister, tell us what to do! We’ll listen to you.”
“We will do whatever you ask of us.”
“That’s right.”
The three sisters spoke enthusiastically, b.u.mping their fists together as if preparing for a big fight.
“Alright, I’ll go first.” Su Wen sat cross-legged on the bed. The bed was nothing more than a sleeping mat woven from bamboo. It was meant to keep the summer heat at bay. While cool and comfortable, it could not replace air-conditioning or the electric fans Su Wen was used to.
Sitting on her bed, Su Wen was the picture of an elegant but lazy Persian cat. Her limpid, peach-blossom eyes sparkled in the flickering candlelight, drawing a person in.
Su Qing and Su Xiu were dumbfounded.
Only Little Sister Su was oblivious to Su Wen’s beauty; she could not appreciate it. Instead, like Su Wen’s handmaiden, Little Sister Su fanned her eldest sister, going so far as to ask, “Big Sister, are you hot? I’ll keep fanning you if you are.”
“Ah, thank you.” Su Wen smiled appreciatively.
Little Sister Su giggled sweetly as if she had eaten a jar of honey. “I’m Big
Sister’s most beloved younger sister. Of course, I have to treat you well.”
Su Xiu and Su Qing could not stand their youngest sister’s shamelessness. One rolled her eyes, and the other glared at Little Sister Su.
They secretly prayed that Sixth Sister would teach the brat a lesson. She was positively infuriating!
“Alright, I’ll hand out your tasks then.” Su Wen pretended not to notice the undercurrent between her three younger sisters. “Ahem! You’re in charge of the family’s living expenses from now on, Su Xiu. That means you’ll need to budget for everything from food and clothes to housing and transportation – this is a big responsibility. You’ll need to put in a lot of effort to do well. I’ll still help you when I can, but I’ll focus most of my energy on trying to help us earn more money.”
Su Wen could not allow herself to be bogged down by household matters all day – it would be a waste of time and resources. To gain respect from the community, it was not enough to tie herself to Hengyang’s chariot; she had to have the ability to stand on her own two feet.
Sun Yunyun would start bugging Hengyang more after she completed her college entrance exams; at least, that was how things were supposed to go, according to memory.
Sun Yunyun would enter junior college the next year, becoming the first student in Clear Water County to accomplish this milestone. Afterward, she would go to a teacher’s college, graduating with stellar grades. The country would a.s.sign her to a school as a teacher, and many would see her as a capable young woman. At that time, she could hold her head high, regardless of how bad her reputation was now.
Seeing that Sun Yunyun was about to turn the tables, how could she stand still and wait for a beating?
