Chapter 1292: Chapter 1292: Being Watched
“But we’re still young, and you wouldn’t like it if I started dating early, right?” Su Xue said with the air of a good child, winking at Su Qing, “Second sister, you’re not getting any younger. The others in the village who are your age are already looking for partners, dating for a year or two before getting married seems just right.”
After the New Year, Su Qing turned twenty. In the countryside, this would have meant it was time to start looking for a match, but once in the city, she felt no urgency.
Though Su Qing wasn’t concerned, Su Xiu was. Back in Trinity village, Su Xiu had been focused on saving up for Second sister’s dowry. Now that she could afford the dowry, she was even more anxious.
“Big sister said she doesn’t oppose early dating, as long as nothing inappropriate happens,” Su Xiu immediately said. “We all listen to Big sister, no matter what happens between you and Cao Jun, you can’t do anything inappropriate, understand?”
“I understand, I understand,” Su Xue nodded hurriedly.
“You can’t keep things from us; you need to tell us right away. You can talk to anyone you want about it, just don’t be brainless like Fifth sister.” Su Xiu reminded her uneasily, “Otherwise, when we find out and come to settle the score, don’t blame us for being rude.”
Su Xue stuck out her tongue, laughing happily.
Su Jun looked innocent. “Third sister, what do you mean by that? How could I be brainless? I’m the smartest in the family, the one with the most brains.”
“Haha!” Su Xiu flashed a forced smile, “Ask Second sister if you have brains.”
Su Jun looked toward Su Qing.
“You have intellect, just not much emotional intelligence,” Su Qing said with a look of disdain. “We’re all a bit worried about you studying alone in the Capital. We will try to come visit you whenever possible.”
“Alright, just remember to bring me some delicious food.” Su Jun was not shy and started making requests right away, listing several dishes she wanted, all homemade and unavailable outside, like fried dumplings, shepherd’s purse dumplings, pickled cuc.u.mbers, dried pickled mustard greens, and more. Some were easy to bring, others not, but Su Qing agreed to all regardless.
Difficult to bring or not, she would find a way.
“By the way, Second sister, have you noticed that lately there always seems to be someone secretly watching our store?” Su Xue had been helping out at the store daily since the winter break began, working as a salesperson, and for about ten days she noticed that someone was covertly watching the store every day.
Sometimes it was a middle-aged woman, sometimes an older woman.
“Who are they?” Su Qing frowned slightly, her expression a bit serious. “I haven’t been going to the store as much lately and I leave right after I arrive. I haven’t noticed. Are you sure you’re not mistaken?”
“I definitely haven’t made a mistake.” Su Xue was very sensitive to being watched, mainly because the people watching were not very discreet about it, easy to spot, and their stares made her very uncomfortable.
“It’s two women, one very old, almost as old as Gou Dan’s grandma. The other is middle-aged. I believe they seem to be mother and daughter,” Su Xue briefly described what she had seen, adding her own a.n.a.lysis.
“Do they know you?” Su Xiu asked curiously.
“I’m not sure, if they knew us, why wouldn’t they come and talk?” Su Xue pondered. “We don’t know many people in the Province either! The few we do know wouldn’t be watching us.”
“You’re wrong,” Su Qing suddenly spoke up, her voice firm and strong, startling everyone. “Our family does know people in the Province.”
