Chapter 993: Leaving humankind

Khan recalled distant memories and alien words that seemed to belong to a different life. At once, he knew he had made a mistake. He had pushed things too far, blinded by an

unattainable goal.

'[It's not up to me to decide],' Khan thought in the Nele language. '[A true leader is chosen by others].'

The Niqols had accepted Khan. The Ef'i liked him, the Nele trusted him, and the Thilku welcomed him. Khan had achieved great results with those species without forcing those relations.h.i.+ps to improve, but the Global Army was an exception.

Khan could best define his relations.h.i.+p with humankind as rocky. He had built good and trustworthy connections over his life, but those feats had often involved compromises and mutual benefits. Khan also pursued them out of necessity due to his lofty goals.

Searching for clues about the Nak had forced Khan to engage in the Global Army's politics, performing missions and tasks he could add to his profile. His previous lack of a powerful background had also pushed him toward dangerous and troublesome endeavors, often implicating him in more problematic situations.

Falling in love with Monica had elevated those problems, involving loftier and loftier parties until the n.o.bles joined the fray. That brought another round of issues, forcing Khan to accomplish multiple miracles just to retain the status quo.

Khan had fought wars, won tournaments, performed missions in dangerous environments, engaged in complicated meetings, and more. Still, he had eventually achieved what he had set off to achieve. Khan had learned about the Nak and had found political stability.

Senerth's mission should have been the end of it, but Brigadier General Meadrey's attack had demanded a reaction. Yet, Khan had planned to use it as a public show of force, hoping to get the Global Army to stop messing with him. What was supposed to be a simple retribution had turned into another political act, and Khan now saw the flawed reasoning behind that decision.

Khan had forced the Global Army to be okay with his presence, but that wasn't true acknowledgment. Those close to him had faith in his character and future, but the other human parties only saw him as an advantageous business partner. They would work with him but wouldn't accept him as one of their own.

That was supposed to be the end. Khan should have been okay with that result, but his overbearing nature and the desire to retain a proper connection with humankind had corrupted his actions. Part of him did all that to fulfill Monica's wishes, but his current approach couldn't work.

Khan believed Monica. His broad mindset and awareness of the looming universal threat made him perfect for leaders.h.i.+p positions in humankind.

However, Khan was no tyrant and had no interest in becoming one. Even his incredible, unfathomable, and mystical abilities couldn't enforce acceptance. The Global Army couldn't see him as a human, so he wouldn't force the matter. Humankind would probably come around in the future, but that wasn't up to Khan. He wouldn't push for it anymore, at least.

"Tell your soldiers to drop their weapons," Khan announced, looking at the Brigadier General. "I'll spare anyone who surrenders."

Brigadier General Meadrey wasn't one to give up, but his plan had been a success. The Global Army could now see Khan's true face, so more loyalists like him would appear. He had forced Khan's political career into a corner, so he found no reason to there was no need for his soldiers to fight anymore.

Of course, Khan didn't say anything about the Brigadier General, but the latter wasn't picky. Moreover, something had changed in Khan's aura and gaze. A sour acceptance had filled his face, rea.s.suring the General about his intentions.

Brigadier General Meadrey hesitated for a few seconds before bringing his weak arm to his ear, speaking into the communication device with his hoa.r.s.e voice. "Drop your weapons and surrender."

The order reached the fort's spare control rooms and the soldiers' ears, but the latter didn't stop fighting until a specific siren pierced through the air. The loud noise conveyed an unmistakable directive, which the human troops didn't dare to oppose.

The surviving humans suddenly retreated, dropping their rifles or mana-enhanced melee weapons before falling to their knees. They also wrapped their hands behind their napes, a.s.suming a stance even the Scalqa could recognize.

Nevertheless, the Scalqa abided by their own rules. They didn't understand how human wars worked, but Khan intervened before anyone could exploit the Brigadier General's soldiers' defenseless stances.

"[Stop]," Khan whispered, but his alien voice reached every corner of the fort. A few Scalqa were on the verge of completing their attacks, but the order made them freeze on the spot.

Countless gazes rose toward the partially melted staircase. Everything about the situation hinted at Khan's victory, especially with him towering over the seemingly dying enemy leader. The human troops were kneeling, but the Scalqa controlled their excitement to await Khan's confirmation.

Khan met all the Scalqa's gazes, running his bright eyes over the square before looking at the giant screen again. He knew he was about to announce something that would bring countless problems, complaints, and political chaos. Still, Khan couldn't help but feel lighter thinking about it.

The scanners pointed at the battlefield didn't have a specific location. They were simply everywhere, be it in the nearby settlements, orbit, or slightly above in the sky. However, Khan could sense a few of them, and his whole body turned to face it.

"From now on," Khan exclaimed, his voice steady and resolute, "My n.o.ble faction and all the parties that swore loyalty to it won't belong to humankind anymore."

Most Scalqa still had problems understanding the human language, and those who did couldn't comprehend the magnitude of Khan's announcement. Yet, the human troops couldn't help but look in his direction and open their mouths in surprise. Even Brigadier General Meadrey didn't expect that sort of drastic development.

"I plan to maintain a beneficial and friendly relations.h.i.+p with the Global Army," Khan continued. "However, once we renegotiate our current deals, I'll act as an alien party and will treat you in the same way."
