Chapter 95 - That fateful Night
Li Zhiqiang still remembered what had happened that night.
A day before that night, he had taken her to the lake where his grandfather used to take him when he was a child. The place occupied a special place in his heart. And he wanted to a.s.sociate it with the most treasured memories of his life. He had decided to propose to her that night.
Under the beautiful fireworks and serene enchantment of starless sky, he had gone down on his knees and presented her with the ring. Jing Lihua was flushed, surprised and everything. It was too sudden. They were both young and hadn't known each other for more than a month. But they both also knew that they were meant for each other. With trembling hands, she had grasped his hands and accepted the proposal.
Things were about to change. Li Zhiqiang thought eternal bliss awaited him next. But what happened next day shattered their beautiful dream into pieces.
The next day, only for a few hours, Li Zhiqiang had left her alone at the penthouse. And in those few hours, everything terrible happened.
Li Zhiqiang still recalled his brother had rushed to him telling something terrible had happened to Jing Lihua. He recalled the phone slipping from his hands and smas.h.i.+ng into the floor. He recalled himself not caring at all. What had happened next had been a little blank for Li Zhiqiang. All he could recall that he hadn't felt that vulnerable in his life. He had rushed to the penthouse not caring for anything or anyone in the world.
When he had seen his Jing Lihua covered in blood, his heart shattered. It felt like his whole world was crumbling. It was only the rapid rise and fall of Jing Lihua's chest and her weak pulse that had kept him from going berserk.
"Wu Xiuqin. Where is Wu Xiuqin? She was there. Li Zhiqiang where is she?" That was the first thing she had said after gaining a little bit of her consciousness back while they were on their way to the hospital. Thinking back about that time, Li Zhiqiang realized how naive she was.
She had a pure heart. To those she was true, she would do anything to protect. That was one of her qualities that made Li Zhiqiang heart warm up to her back six years ago. That and her indescribable strength.
Surrounded by all the negativity that she had suffered when she grew up, she had still retained the goodness of her heart. She was still so pure and untainted. Her naiveness was adorable. Yet it was what that had resulted in their separation.
"Jing Lihua... You scared me. Don't ever do that again." Once Jing Lihua had woken up Li Zhiqiang hugged her like there was no tomorrow. They were already on their way to the hospital. There was nothing else in his eyes than her. "Stay with me." That was the first time in his life that Li Zhiqiang had felt so scared. If anything had happened to her, he didn't know what he would do. Even the thought of losing her suffocated him.
"Wu Xiuqin. She had also been there. Where is she?"
"Wu Xiuqin..." Li Zhiqiang was reluctant to say. "We didn't find anyone else there. Recall correctly Jing Lihua. Was she with you?"
"Yes, she was!" Jing Lihua's eyes widened in fear. "You have left her there. Li Zhiqiang turn the car! She was there. She was hurt. W-We must get her. "
"I'll send someone to get her. Please calm down." Li Zhiqiang hugged her, attempting to soothe her. In no way, he would turn back when Jing Lihua's wounds were so serious. She had already lost a critical amount of blood. Li Zhiqiang didn't care about any Wu Xiuqin at that moment. His Jing Lihua was in a dire situation. If he didn't get her to the hospital soon... Li Zhiquang didn't want to think of the consequences.
"No, turn the car. Li Zhiqiang turn the car." Jing Lihua was using the last of her energy to fight him. To see her struggling like that, it ached his heart.
"Jing Lihua." He whispered holding her face in his hands trying to shush her. "You are injured. I must take you to the hospital. Forgive me... I can't do what you are asking for. I'll send someone to get her as soon as possible."
"Li Zhiqiang. Promise me you won't let anything happen to her. If you don't, I'll never talk to you again." Jing Lihua had vehemently asked, firmly holding his hands. "Promise me."
"I promise."
It was just these words that had kept her on. After hearing his promise, she fell unconscious gradually. No matter how much he had called her, she wouldn't respond. "I promise Jing Lihua. Please wake up now."
But she didn't. He hadn't let go of her hand until doctors told her she was safe.
But he couldn't keep his promise. After getting Jing Lihua to the hospital when his men had arrived back for Wu Xiuqin, it had been too late. Though Wu Xiuqin's injuries were not severe for a pianist who required acute precision such injury was lethal.
Later Li Zhiqiang had investigated the cause for the explosion and it had everything to do with Wu Junjie. Li Zhiqiang had been furious. He was ready to destroy everything and everyone in sight. But he was stopped by her. By her last words before she had fallen unconscious again. Because the doctors had told him that while her life was out of danger, she might never wake up again.
They had told him that even if she woke up, the possibility of her forgetting everything was high. Li Zhiqiang had spent his days and night by her side. He refused to leave. He didn't eat. He didn't sleep. He didn't step out of the hospital room. If he had left... he would have killed Wu Junjie for sure.
Until one day, her eyes opened. Her consciousness gradually returned. The day she had woken up, she was just like a lifeless doll. Doctors told them that her consciousness might take days to recover.
When he had walked in front of her what he had seen in her eyes pierced his hearts. She had failed to recognize him. The way she had looked at him was akin to the way she was looking at all the other people in the room. There was not a hint of recognization in her eyes. It was as if all those memories, all those cherished memories, they had created together vanished into thin air.
It was as if all of it was a lie. All their past time, all those feelings, all those promises that they had made to each other-all never happened in the first place. He was just another stranger in her eyes. Only Li Zhiqiang knew how he had endured it.
As time pa.s.sed, she began to recover her consciousness. But she had never called for him. Li Zhiqiang had been too scared to come in front of her. He used to observe her from a distance fearing to appear in front of her eyes.
"At least, you are still alive." Li Zhiqiang had said standing outside the hospital room, looking at her lying down on the white sheets. Thick bandages covered her forehead. He had held onto these thoughts. Maybe one day she would recognize him and they would be together once again. That hope alone kept him from breaking apart. "Maybe I would be able to have you fall for me once again."
But fate was cruel. What she had said the next moment brutally ripped him of even that small hope.
