Chapter 2554 A Pilgrimage
Learning about Xukong's history was always interesting to Lin Mu, and he had long since wished to know more about his master.
But it wasn't something he could just demand and needed to wait until Xukong thought he met the requirements for it. After all, the secrets hidden in Xukong's background were not something that could be heard without a cost.
Lin Mu ruminated over what Xukong had told him while Temple Head Xing Duyi continued to set up his barrier. He watched the old man work and found it to be rather beautiful on some level.
'The Temple Head is a lot more proficient at Spatial Skills than I am,' Lin Mu understood upon observing him for a while.
If one considered pure power, Lin Mu was certainly above the Temple Head since his skills came from the ring itself. But the one thing that differentiated the two was the utilization of the Spatial Qi itself.
Lin Mu hadn't reached the point where he could fully use it himself and needed the ring's a.s.sistance to do so. The way he did that was to use normal Immortal Qi and let the ring convert it into Spatial Qi, activating the skills that way.
But Xing Duyi did all that on his own.
Lin Mu could see the Spatial Qi inside the man's body that looked like a sea of mercury.
At the same time, however, Lin Mu also saw several impurities mixed in with it.
'When the ring uses Spatial Qi, it is completely pure, but the one Xing Duyi is using has impurities in it.' Lin Mu tried to see just what kind of impurities they were and soon discovered they were strands of Turbulent Spatial Qi.
While this was also Spatial Qi, it was not something that could be controlled by a cultivator. It would simply go haywire if one tried to manipulate it. Not to mention, the danger it posed was also a lot higher.
It was the type of Spatial Qi most abundant in the void and often the cause of death for those who wandered there.
'So he couldn't cleanse it,' Lin Mu figured.
Thirty minutes pa.s.sed as Xing Duyi finally finished the Spatial Isolation Barrier.

Upon its completion, Lin Mu could now see a membrane surrounding them. The membrane was about ten meters wide and obscured everything outside it.
It was as if one were standing inside a dome made out of frosted gla.s.s.
"It is done, Great-Granduncle Master," Xing Duyi stated.
"I'll start then." Lin Mu was also looking forward to just what Xukong was going to show them.
He extended his hand and activated the ring's innate power to open rifts. Lin Mu's immortal qi was consumed at a rapid rate as he channeled it into the ring. If this was a rift into the Lesser or Minor Void, the consumption would not have been this high, but this was a rift into the Grand Void!

A few seconds later, the s.p.a.ce in front of his hand flickered and began to twist.
"Opening a rift with such ease?" Xing Duyi almost couldn't believe it.
To most other Spatial Masters, opening a Spatial Rift either required a strong skill that would take time to activate or the use of Spatial Weapons. Other than that, the usage of a Spatial Array was the only remaining method to open a rift.
But Lin Mu was clearly not using any of them—or at least it appeared that way to the old man, as he couldn't see the ring on Lin Mu's finger in the first place.
A few more seconds later, the twisting s.p.a.ce began to tear.
"Expand." Lin Mu pushed his hand forward, forcing the tear to turn into a rift.
The opening of the rift put pressure on the Spatial Fabric around it, which wished to be pulled apart. However, the Spatial Isolation Barrier that Xing Duyi had set up managed to hold firm.
It acted as a secure anchor, preventing the rift from expanding more than needed while also containing the Spatial Fluctuations emanating from it. Each thread of the Spatial Fabric vibrated, releasing more and more fluctuations.
These were like ripples on the surface of a pond that wished to travel far but were contained by the walls of the pond.
The insides of the rift were dark, but occasional flashes of Spatial Energy could be seen. It looked almost the same as any other void, but Xing Duyi knew it truly was the Grand Void.
'The density of Spatial Energy in there is simply too ma.s.sive.' The man could feel the fluctuations, even from outside.
'What do I do now, Senior?' Lin Mu asked.
"Now you wait," Xukong replied and went silent.
Xing Duyi was also silent and didn't ask why they were just waiting now. He had waited for this moment his entire life and didn't mind waiting a while longer.
Unknown to the two, a set of ten eyes opened up in the depths of the Grand Void.
These eyes were not visible in the rift Lin Mu had opened, as they were in a different region, but despite being far, they observed nonetheless.

"I should never have agreed to a.s.sist the old monster's disciples with their 'pilgrimage,'" Xukong muttered to himself. "I should just get this over with."
He then pointed one of his ma.s.sive legs toward the direction of the Spatial Rift Lin Mu had opened and another leg toward an unknown direction.

The Spatial Rift began to change its orientation and turned toward the direction that Xukong was pointing with his other leg.
To Lin Mu and Xing Duyi, though, no change seemed to have occurred as the background of the Grand Void simply looked different to them. It wasn't as if they could pinpoint locations just from the streaks of Spatial Energy.
Once the Spatial Rift was facing the right way, Xukong released thousands of tiny threads that were invisible to the naked eye. To those with Spatial Perception, however, they looked like the finest silk ever seen.
