Chapter 17: Red Eagle Pavilion

Van considered Yu Lin's words thoughtfully and turned to the man that was nervously watching his expression.

"How much are you going to sell it at?"

"I was thinking... about 20 gold."

"20 Gold?!"

Van's jaw dropped as he heard the man's price. The price for this rock was 10 times more than the worth of all the other items in his shop combined! Lin Ming started to sweat as he saw Van's shocked expression.

"But if the honored guest is willing, I would like to trade this rock for a favor."

Lin Ming picked up the rock, with both hands and held it out in front of him towards Van. Van bit his lip as he thought of what to say.

"THIS IS YOUR ONLY CHANCE! ACCEPT IT QUICKLY BRAT!"

Van winced in pain and rubbed the blood from his nose. This dragon mentor of his was very aggressive with his mental transmission. Luckily, Lin Ming had his head bowed and was busy staring at his shoes. Van sighed, a little too dramatically for Yu Lin's tastes, and picked up the rock.

"I accept. I am not strong at the moment, and will fulfill your promise when I can."

"Wait!"

Van stopped in his tracks and turned around to face Lin Ming. Lin Ming took a long breath and stood up straight.

"I would like to request to become your follower and follow you on your journeys."

Van scanned to find the man at the 8th Stage of Body Fortification.

"I would like to apologize, but where I am going, you wouldn't be allowed in."

The man looked confused. Where in the lower reaches would someone with his cultivation base not be accepted or at least tolerated? Unless...

"You're going to the Middle Continent?!"

The man was exultant with joy. He had picked the right person. No one with the ability to advance to the middle continent would any ordinary person. He felt as if he had won the lottery.

"No matter! I will do whatever young master says!"

Van watched his new follower beam with joy and thought of what he was going to do. He was thinking of starting a business, maybe a Sect or Clan in the lower reaches to improve his power base, influence, and wealth.

"Go find my aunt. Her description is going to be on this jade slip that I am about to give you. Give it to her and tell her, Van sent you."

He tossed over a bag of holding containing a few gold coins, a jade slip, and provisions for the journey back to Mulberry City. Lin Ming stared at his hands for a while before bowing to his new young master.

"I will follow you to the heights of the world and the ends of the earth! I acknowledge you as my young master!"

"This kid, ain't too bad. Hey Brat! Give him this pill. Tell him if he would like to try his fortune, consume it."

A reddish green pill appeared in Van's hands, which he then quickly tossed over and relayed the message. Lin Ming nodded and bowed one last time before heading off to Mulberry City.

Van watched Lin Ming's retreating figure before turning around and pulling out a note. He started walking down the road until he reached a large building. This building looked like an ornament. It was made from many precious materials and would've attracted the eyes of many thieves if not for the fact that it was owned by the revered Potent River Sect and its patriarch. There was a large sign on it that read, "Red Eagle Pavilion". There were 6 guards in front of a 10-foot tall entrance that included a pearl white jade arch that depicted rivers and mighty figures. Many people would pa.s.s by and look at the building with awe and adoration.

The guards glared at Van as he made his way up the steps to the entrance. The guard captain stepped up and gave the other guards a look of "I'll handle this one." The people at the foot of the steps looked at Van with mocking expressions. Many people that had just come into the city would try to get into the building without realizing the requirements and would get sent away shamefully. A small crowd formed to watch an antic.i.p.ated spectacle.

"Fellow Cultivator, I can tell that this is your first time here. This place is for only those with a command medallion from the Potent River Sect. I would like to request for you to show me your medallion."

The guard captain had a dull expression. He was waiting for Van to reply with the antic.i.p.ated "I don't have one."

"Would this work?"

Van released a cultivation base at the 3rd Stage of Dantian Formation. The guards and the guard captain gasped, they were already above 30 years of age and was only at the 2nd Stage of Dantian Formation. Yet, this youth that was not even 20 years of age had reached the 3rd Stage!

"Forgive me, young master. But I need to have proof of your authorization."

Van remembered something that had been mailed to him by the Guard Captain of Mulberry City. It was a badge with the insignia of the Potent River Sect on it. He pulled it out and handed it to the guard captain.

There was a loud gasp before the guard captain bowed to Van and his tone of voice changed to one of respect. The other guards looked at the guard captain quizzically as they watched his reaction. They were all sent a voice transmission.

"He has a Red Level Command Medallion."

The other guards stiffened and stood at attention after they heard the words from the guard captain.

The Potent River Sect Command Medallions were divided up into 7 levels: Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Red, Purple, and Crimson.

Green and Blue were the most common and were usually given to servants and other non-important characters. Yellow was given to outer sect disciples. Orange was given to important outer sect elders and inner sect disciples or the equivalent. Red was the equivalent of the authority of an important core disciple or conclave disciples. Purple was given to the Grand Elder and Patriarch. Finally, the Crimson badge was given to the old monsters that were the backing of the Potent River Sect or the equivalent.

The requirement for entering the Red Eagle Pavilion was only a Blue Badge. People, with the authority above Orange, would usually use the Grand Crane Pavilion, but considering that this youth in front of him was obviously an outsider, it wasn't too strange.

"Follow me, Young Master."

The guard captain of the 3rd Red Eagle Squadron gave Van a tour of the pavilion. The main area was a circular structure that branched off into other buildings. There was a trading center, transportation services, an auction house, etc. Every one of the buildings was extravagantly decorated as if there was no consideration for cost whatsoever. This building itself was a testament to the Potent River Sect's power in the Kingdom and the entire Lower Reaches.

Van started to admire this sect a little. It was extremely dominating and rather favorable toward Van's tastes. But alas, the Lower Reaches wasn't a place that could hold this dragon among men. Considering that his mentor is a dragon deity, even this world wouldn't be able to hold him.

After a few hours of going on a shopping spree, Van had finally gotten everything that he needed and a little bit more. He had bought a Ring of s.p.a.ce that froze the effects of time on the objects inside it to store his provisions. He also purchased many herbs, rather extravagant food, and a few empty jade slips to contemplate Dragon Breaks the Void with. With his command medallion, he also received an additional 20% off of all the items he had bought. His balance was now down to a meager 10 silver, which was still more than what he had a year before when he couldn't even find one copper.

Van felt extremely satisfied. The feeling of being rich and flaunting one's wealth felt really good. At the same time, losing such an enormous amount of wealth that he had just obtained from selling the corpses of the dead Fierce Beasts in the crater gave him a little more than a slight sting.

Van still had the corpses of the Emperor ranked beasts and the cubical purple core from the Green Earthen Bear. If he sold them, he would probably get a huge sum at 50,000 gold coins. He decided to s.h.i.+p the corpses to his aunt with a note saying that it was for starting a business. The two corpses had a worth of about 10,000 gold coins which was enough to start a rather large scale trading firm in Mulberry City.

Finally remembering what he was supposed to do, he asked the guard captain to take him to the transportation services building.

The building was quite a magical sight to behold, winged eagles carrying important personages and mail carriers flew throughout a large spherical area.

"How would I get to the Flowing River Sect?"

"Young Master, you would have to talk to the Transportation Services Manager."

"Take me to him."

The guard captain hailed one of the carriages carried by winged eagles and they flew to another section of the building. Van looked out the window and watched as cultivators rushed around delivering statistic papers and running errands for higher-ups. All of a sudden, the carriage lurched to a stop.

"Move out of the way! Inner Sect Disciple Bai Lin is here!"

A youth, around the age of 15, was clearing the way for an expensive carriage. The youth wore the robes of an outer sect disciple and seemed to be the lackey of the one sitting inside.

"Haven't you heard me? Move out of the way!"

The youth had an expression of disdain on his face as he saw the ordinary looking carriage that was blocking the way to Manager Lu's office.

"Who dares to block my way."

Another youth emerged from the carriage. He had straight black hair and a face that would turn the heads of many girls. The guard captain started to sweat and walked out, preparing to explain.

"Young Master Bai Lin. I am sorry for the inconvenience. Could you wait a little bit longer for your meeting with Manager Lu? For my sake."

The guard captain smiled nervously as he watched for Bai Lin's reaction. Bai Lin is the grand nephew of the Grand Elder, so he wasn't used to this kind of treatment. His grandfather was the Grand Elder's senior brother but wasn't as accomplished as the Grand Elder.

"You dare block my way! You in the carriage! Get out here."

Bai Lin stood there with an arrogant, domineering stance as he watched the carriage in front of him. Van calmly emerged and placed two hands behind his back. Bai Lin was only at the 8th Stage of Body Fortification, so Van didn't take him too seriously.

"When I tell people to get out of my way, they get out of my way! What give you the right to not?!"

Bai Lin stood there with a sneer on his face. The people pa.s.sing by had looks of pity as they watched the newcomer confront Bai Lin. Bai Lin was known for his arrogance and with his ident.i.ty as the grand nephew of the Grand Elder of the Potent River Sect, even Inner Sect Disciples wouldn't casually offend him. Van decided not to pull out his red command medallion.

"Oh? And what give you the right to make me get out of your way?"

Bai Lin started to fume and the air slightly distorted from the heat emitting from his anger. He was ready to teach this newcomer youth a lesson that they would never forget.
