He looks eaten up with worry and the image only worsens when he buries his head in his hands after taking a seat.
"Timothy."
His head shoots up at the sound of her voice.
"You shouldn't be here. If the king catches word -"
She cuts him off with an impatient flick of her hand.

"Trust me, it's not my face people were looking at when I made my way here."
That was half the point of the outfit she chose for these outings after all. Half the people ogled her a.s.sets and the other half were too prudish to look.
He gives an amused snort before levelling a serious look at her.
"I'm a.s.suming you're here because of what happened to Kent and Lady Arabella. Do you know if they made it out okay?"
"They're fine."
His relief is palpable.
No, despite what Kent probably thinks, Timothy did not set them up.
He would never do that to her.
"Good. When I heard about the fire I was worried."
A fire?
So that's how Kent them out.
It certainly explains the state he was in upon arrival.
"This isn't just a social call. I need something from you."
He nods.
"Of course. Anything."
"Do you still have the doc.u.ments I left here?"
She doesn't clarify when.
She's only been here once before - when she was asked to leave House Auron.
She'd sought shelter from Timothy, half expecting him to deny any relation to her and throw her onto the street as the previous Lord Ausset had.
Their shared history hadn't given her much to put her faith in where he was concerned but she was desperate then.
Instead he'd surprised her by welcoming her in and offering her protection.
As tempting as it was, she'd known she couldn't stay here forever.
All she'd do is put him in danger.
Still it was he who arranged for her to travel to the mountains and for that she is indebted to him.
"Yes, of course. I've been keeping them safe for you."
He unlocks one of his drawers and pulls out the doc.u.ments.
She gives them a cursory look before thanking him.
She should leave now but she can't help her curiosity.
"What is the crown accusing Arabella of?"
"A bunch of outrageous things. There's no way any of it is true and they know it. It's almost enough to make me think it was an attempt to lure you out of the mountains but why now?"
No, not Helena.
Sonia…? Or the other key players in the rebellion?
Still she couldn't very well tell Timothy that.
She may trust Timothy but the others do not.
"Who knows what the king is planning."
She tries to deflect his suspicions.
"Hey, Hel?"
She gives a noncommittal grunt.
"Whatever it is that you're planning… Be careful, alright?"
She gives him a stiff nod.
She takes one last look at him before leaving.
