I woke up feeling sore and I had mixed feelings about my most recent dream. I now knew how Ivy had been born, how all of the fairies had been born. But I couldn't help but wonder about Laylan and Luca.s.sius. Was there something between them? Or did they deny all of the feelings? Or maybe they grew and those feelings disappeared. Question after question ran in my mind as I sat in my bed thinking.

I lifted the covers and felt the stiffness in my arms. There were bruises, ma.s.sive bruises that looked like huge handprints. I knew inside, why they were there but I didn't want to admit it. I had encountered a demon, a very powerful demon. I lifted up on my feet and walked to the shower, glimpsing in the mirror as I did. I half expected to see that demon again but instead, I saw a flash of white, then red within a second it was back to my normal. I squinted my eyes at my reflection, trying to figure out what I had just seen.

After my shower, I got on with the housework and sat down to write. Ivy's birth was after Laylan's, naturally but before she and Luca.s.sius sparred. I was trying to figure out a timeline of the dreams that I had had. Of course, there was one that didn't fit anywhere but I tried not to think about it.

I looked at my fingers, remembering that night, as I held my pen. The blisters had shrunk but you could still see the skin discolored from the burn. I ran my hands over my biceps where the bruises were still, s.h.i.+ning deep purple on my fair skin. They looked so bad that I just wanted to put something on to hide them from even myself.

I moved from the table and went to find my sweater. When I returned to the kitchen, I decided to go sit in my new nook that overlooked my roses. I had talked Josh into adding a seat for me a few months ago and I was going to enjoy it. I looked out into the back yard.

Suddenly, I am in the middle of a huge rose garden at dusk. There are roses of every color; bright reds, brilliant yellows, and pretty pinks. I look down at my old fas.h.i.+oned renaissance style dress and notice that I have cleavage for days. I am kneeling in the garden on my knees. My hair blows over my shoulder and it is a fierce red and is in spiral curls.

I know why I am here so I close my eyes and begin to focus. I picture the white energy entering my knees and begin filling me. I reach down and touch the soft gra.s.s below me. I see the dark energy that has been dragging me down exiting through my fingers into the ground. I continue pulling in white energy until I am full to the brim. I try sending it back into the earth but I am pulling far more then I can push it out. Suddenly, I feel the energy burst out around me.

I open my eyes and look around at all of the roses and realize that they have all fully bloomed; their radiance nearly glowing.

I stand and reach out to touch one of the roses and p.r.i.c.k my finger on a thorn. I jerk back and suck on my finger as if to pull the pain from it.

"You have learned so much, my dear." I hear a soft, delicate voice. "You have managed to find magick where very little exists. Congratulations." I know her, I've never seen her but I know her. She is a G.o.ddess, the Moon G.o.ddess. She is Laylan's mother and she is standing before me.

"Thank you," I manage.

"Keep practicing, my child, for one day you will need that skill to save the universe." She finishes with a slight bow of her head and a smile on her face. "I will be watching." At that, she vanished and I felt a surge of bright, white energy. It made me lightheaded and dizzy. The world began to spin and then everything went dark.

"Abby? Abby?" I could hear her and the more she repeated my name, the more clearly her voice and the world became. I opened my eyes to see frantic brown eyes looking at me.

"Veda?" I asked as I furrowed my brow.

"Oh, my G.o.ds, are you okay?" Veda asked as she looked me up and down.

"Yeah, I think so."

"Why are you out here?" She asked and I looked around confused as to what she was talking about. I was in my backyard and I couldn't remember how I got out here.

"I don't know," I answered honestly. She helped me to my feet and I glanced over to my roses and realized that they were all in full bloom. But how? They hadn't been when I was inside, looking out.

"Josh wanted me to come to check on you. Said you had a nightmare night before last. He said he was worried about you. Said you had bruises and your hand was burned and you were seeing demons and…" Veda was rambling a mile a minute.

"Veda," I said to stop her. "Let's go in and make some coffee and I will tell you all about it." I smiled and I could see her physically relax at that.

"Okay, let's go get some coffee."

After about half an hour, we both had our coffee and she was reading all of my stories so far, including last night's dream and the nightmare the night before. As she read my writing, I sat and thought about the rose garden.

The red hair, ample bosom, and old renaissance dress. I knew who it had been. It was Dru, an immortal woman Kethra, half-demon and half-human. She was a woman that I had known for about ten years now. She was different than Laylan. She was as equally dark as Laylan was light. Equally cold as Laylan was warm. Equally as callous as Laylan was caring.

I knew both women and everything about them but I knew of them differently. Laylan I saw in dreams. Dru, I just knew. I knew she had been a princess. She was a vampire hunter. She was the Champion of the G.o.ds. She was fearless and dangerous.

"So how is your hand?" Veda asked as she took my hand, pulling me from my thoughts. Her brows furrowed as she examined my fingertips where the blisters had been. "It was your right hand, right?" she asked as she grabbed my left hand. I looked down at my fingertips and realized that my fingertips were fine. No blisters, no discoloration, no signs of trauma.

I pulled my left hand back and lowered my sweater down my arms to see that the bruises were gone. No darkness, no yellow, nothing. I looked up at Veda with, I can only imagine, shock on my face. They had just been there huge and dark. What is going on? I asked myself. I glanced at my arms again then at Veda.

"They're gone!"
