I got out of the library after a few hours and was on my way back home when I heard that familiar but unpleasant voice.
"Hey!"
I didn't reply. I didn't turn back either. I stopped instinctively for a brief moment before continuing to walk. But the owner of that voice quickly caught up to me.
"Long time no see."
"Guess my luck ran out today."
"How are you?" he continued, completely disregarding the fact that I didn't want to continue.
"None of your business," I didn't want to sound rude but it really was none of his business.
"Are you dating that silver-haired guy?"
"As I said before, it's none of your business. Stop bugging me."
Oliver St'arc looked at me with a weird gaze. The warm expression he came with initially completely vanished. There was a cold glint in his eyes but he still maintained this calmness and didn't say anything else. I wasn't interested in talking with him for a second more. I tried to pa.s.s him but he got in my way again.
"You were different that day. I didn't see the unapproachable Eve then. What I saw was a very sweet Eve. All these months I've tried to reach for you but I was denied. I thought you were that way with everyone. I thought I was making some progress. But I was so wrong. I... " I didn't even realize he was stalking us in the mall that day. That d.a.m.n stalker.
"Progress. Huh It was just your delusion," I replied cutting him off but he just ignored me.
"Someone comes and takes you away. It's just unacceptable. What does that guy has that I don't? I want to know."
"Um. Silver hair."
"I'm being serious here Eve." That expression on his face was worth it.
"Well, he's just..." I thought for a while before realising that I could say more than a thousand good things about him. "He's just the best," I replied honestly this time, hoping he would not disturb me anymore.
"I really like you," he said, softly, looking right in my eyes, without blinking. His words seemed so sincere and truthful. I had no way to discern if he was lying to me or not. If he was lying, he sure was one h.e.l.l of an actor.
"I appreciate your kindness but I already have someone I love."
"You didn't even give me a chance." He looked at me with those glittering puppy dog eyes. There was helplessness in his words. I kept having a feeling that what if he was telling truth to me. I didn't know what to reply.
"I don't understand the reason at all. It's not fair... I can colour my hair to silver too if you'd like... I promise I'd become the best too." As he said these words, I saw a trace of moisture in his eyes. It looked like he was really crying. But if he thought he could melt me with those tears, he was so wrong.
Yes, I felt a little trace of guilt at that moment. The guilt of breaking someone's heart. But if being with my Black breaks a million hearts, I'd break a million of hearts without a second thought.
I couldn't continue to stand there. If I moved forward, I didn't think Oliver would have tried to stop me again. But I walked in the opposite direction, choosing to exit from somewhere else. As I turned, I saw a few of his friends standing at the side quite a distance away.
"Stop." I heard Oliver but I didn't stop. The next thing I knew was that he had reached out for my shoulder but I moved and his hand slipped off my shoulder at the next moment.
I heard something snap. It wasn't a loud sound but when I heard that snapping sound, I felt sad all of a sudden. I felt like I lost something very important in that short second. I looked around to see what it was but there was nothing. I checked myself, only to realize that the chain of the necklace my Black created for me had broken. Somehow, even that red s.h.i.+ning stone was broken and it had lost its l.u.s.tre.
I felt heartbroken. The memories came running into my mind and I just let them in. I remembered how Black went to the world of fairies and stole their precious crimson red only because he wanted to prepare a gift for me. He was so tired on that journey that he fell into my room. I remembered how he teased me. I remembered how my eyes refused to blink because that red colour of that gem was too beautiful to behold. I remembered it all.
Ever since then, I had never taken off that necklace because that beautiful red always makes me feel close to my Black. And as the necklace broke, I felt really horrible. I didn't understand why it broke. I should have taken more care of that precious gift. I felt like crying my heart out. I think a few drops of tears fell from my eyes but I wasn't sure. I was just staring at that necklace without blinking, wis.h.i.+ng that it'll magically fix itself. My legs felt wobbly and I collapsed. I couldn't muster any strength to continue standing on my feet. I only wished that Black won't be mad at me and he'll forgive me.
"What are you crying for?" I heard that voice again. At that moment, he was the man I hated the most in the world. I couldn't even bother to speak with him.
And after a few seconds, that necklace started glowing a little again. It was the same type of glow I saw when Lilith healed Lorex. Some strange runes like carvings crawled out of the red gem as if they were insects and they suspended themselves in mid-air before they started moving in circles around that gem. The red gem started heating up and I just put it down quickly because of my reflex and took a few steps back. I had no idea what was going on.
The gem then floated in mid-air along with the broken chains of the necklace. A red glowing circle, a few meters wide appeared in mid-air, horizontally, with the necklace at the center. Everyone around was looking at the scene unfolding itself silently, not daring to speak anything.
The next moment, I saw s.p.a.ce distort. From that red glowing circle, well more like a magical ring, I saw black feathers falling out. Those deadly black feathers looked so familiar...
A pair of legs wearing black boots came out of that circle. It looked like someone was descending from that magic circle made of runes. And I was right. Slowly and slowly, that figure descended. The figure had a devilishly handsome face, wearing a white sweater. His silver hair fluttered in the air even though there was no wind and his black wing lightly swayed to his left right side as if it was alive. The jet black l.u.s.trous feathers kept falling one by one by his side. It appeared as if his feathers will never stop falling. That person was my Black.
My Black started looking around at everyone. When his gaze met mine, they stopped, but only for a moment. And in that instant, I saw sadness and helplessness in his eyes. He didn't look at me much but continued to observe the people nearby as he turned. And then his gaze finally stopped at Oliver. He continued gazing on him. I only saw his back from where I was. No one spoke. Or I should say no one could. I was familiar with angels but it's not like everyone was. I remembered that the first time I met him, I didn't know what to do either.
"Tell me... wretch... How do you want to die?" My Black said. His voice wasn't sweet this time. It was deep and very, very scary. All of his words filled one's soul with unfathomable terror. He was emitting a terrifying aura. It appeared he was ready to kill. Oliver s.h.i.+vered and stepped back. He opened his mouth to say something but he couldn't.
"You made her cry. That is your sin... I p.r.o.nounce you guilty of your crime... Death shall be your punishment." Every single one of his word reverberated across the hall. His primal, terror-filled voice continued to echo in my ears.
Oliver's legs gave up when he heard my Black's frightening voice. He just fell on the floor and looked at Black just like how one ordinary person looks at a king.
"Noo!" Oliver spoke in a faint voice but everyone could hear him because there was pin-drop silence in the hallway.
But that terrifying aura of my Black didn't waver in the slightest. I saw him create a slightly curved long sword in his hands. It looked like the same sword Black used in the fight against a demon before.
Black slashed using that sword towards Oliver. Black wanted to behead Oliver in a single strike! It dawned to me that Black wasn't kidding when he sentenced Oliver to death. Before I could tell Black to stop, an illusory barrier of white light formed in front of Oliver and blocked Black's strike. It looked like a bubble that protected him from that strike.
When he saw that bubble like protection appearing, Black roared in fury while looking upwards, louder than ever before, "Gaia! If you come in my way again, I swear I will slaughter every human in this city... I wonder how many you'll be able to protect then."
Cracks appeared into that barrier as it shattered into nothingness with a speed visible to one's eyes. I questioned myself if that happened because of the warning Black gave to Gaia, the lifestream of our world? I was a hundred percent sure that Black was bluffing when he said about slaughtering everyone but I was also sure that no one would believe me at that moment. His acting skills were just too realistic. Black's sword vanished too along with that bubble. I thought my Black was going to let go of this matter but he walked to Oliver, who was still dumbfounded by everything that was happening. Black then held his neck and lifted him in mid-air, so effortlessly.
He first punched his chest. I heard the sounds of bones breaking and I knew he had broken a few of his ribs. More than a few I guess. Black then threw Oliver towards the wall on the right. Oliver bounced off the wall and fell on the ground. His face was pale and he coughed out blood over and over. Oliver's friends just looked at it all happen while retreating at a what they thought was a safer distance. They wanted to run. But black just told them to stop when he noticed them. And they all froze on the spot. I didn't know if it was Black's ability or they were just too afraid.
Ignoring those guys, Black walked towards Oliver and kicked him in the chest. Oliver hit the wall again and laid down on the floor. At that moment, Oliver looked like a half-dead man.
"Why are you doing this to me?" Oliver asked in a faint voice. I was surprised they he could still speak.
Black didn't pay heed to his words. Black then stomped on his leg, breaking those bones too, before continuing the same with his other limbs. He wanted to make Oliver suffer and he sure was doing a good job at it. Every time Oliver would shriek and scream in agony but his cries were far from enough to appease the anger of my angel. Black continued breaking his bones and making him bleed. It looked like Black wanted to quash him like an ant and make him a cripple. I saw him lift his feet. This time it looked like he wanted to smash his head into pieces. And I just realized then he was beating Oliver because of me. I connected the facts of how Black can peep into others' mind with his psychic abilities. My Black was really too sweet to be true. But I didn't want anyone to die because of me.
"Black!" I called out for him and he looked towards me. His eyes still contained sadness in them along with anger. It hurt inside when I looked at him.
"It's enough... Let's go back home.." I tried to persuade him so that he doesn't do something he shouldn't.
"Alright," Black spoke softly, with no trace of frightening voice and overbearing aura that he had a few seconds ago. A faint smile, that didn't look like a smile, appeared on his face. He then turned towards Oliver.
"Rejoice. You'll live," Black's voice changed to a deep and emotionless voice he had before as he issued the verdict. It wasn't acting at all! I realized Black was a completely different person in front of others. No wonder he had such a bad reputation in the other worlds. Black then walked towards me.
"Let's go."
Black said as he picked me up in his arms and stood up. It was so sudden that I could only grasp his neck for support. He was holding me in his arms. I couldn't help but link the scene to a fairytale where a Prince was carrying a commoner woman who had an injury in her feet.
It was so romantic but that princess carry was scary too. I was afraid his arms might get tired and we both would end up falling. I changed my position and hugged him tightly before wrapping my legs around his waist. My Black just let me do whatever I wanted. I was afraid but I wouldn't let go of such an awesome opportunity of being carried by my sweet darling.
Black wrapped his arms around my waist and supported me.
"You so look like a baby right now."
