Lu AnLing hugged Lu Duyi and coaxed him a bit under the strange stares of the relatives. After a small while everyone sat down waiting for news about Grandma Lu.

As Lu AnLing gazed at the door, she felt herself grow more and more nervous as time went by and she wasn't the only one.

No one made a sound, they just stared into s.p.a.ce.

Lu Duyi, who sat beside her, held his hands over his face as if he was trying his best not to cry.

Reaching over, Lu AnLing was going to pat him but she suddenly felt her phone buzz.

Hurrying into a corner a little farther away from her family, Lu AnLing answered the phone.

"Mmm."

Hearing this sound, Kang Jun immediately spoke. "Are you still at the party?"

Kang Jun's voice was still beautifully clear, even if she was hearing it through a phone. Though it was slightly different than the others times they had spoken. Lu AnLing wasn't sure how to explain the change.

For a moment, Lu AnLing paused. She felt tears well up in her eyes.

"No… I'm at the hospital."

"Are you hurt?" Kang Jun's voice changed. She could hear his worry.

"My grandmother collapsed."

Hearing the weakness in the girl's voice, Kang Jun didn't know what to say to her. The line was quiet for a moment, then he spoke in a soft tone.

"I'm coming."

Hearing his voice, Lu AnLing's heart couldn't help but skip a beat.

"No. You really shouldn't."

Kang Jun: "I will. I want to be by your side."

Lu AnLing's heart skipped a beat once more but at the same time, a calming warmth enveloped her.

Though she had to be realistic.

It wouldn't be right for her and Kang Jun to be seen together here. Mostly when they had no idea what their relations.h.i.+p truly was.

So, she told the man to wait for her outside and that, as soon as she could, she would get out and see him.

"I'll wait for you." Kang Jun's voice was low, and to Lu AnLing they contained the purest sincerity she had ever heard.

Her heart began to tighten.

***

At around 2am, the Lu family were informed that Grandma Lu's condition was stable. Everyone was relieved but they were also informed that they would need to wait until Grandma Lu was awake to know the extent of the damage her fall had caused.

The doctor even suspected that she would have a concussion.

The adults all decided that it was best to stay and wait but Madame Kang ordered Mr. Jing to send Lu Duyi home.

Lu Duyi was adamant in staying but his mothers words were like the law so he was forced to follow Mr. Jing and his father out and since Lu AnLing's aunt and uncle had to fetch Lu Xinya, because they'd promised her that morning. They left a small while after Lu Duyi.

This left, Lu AnLing, Lu Shuya, their mother, Lu Jiayi, her boyfriend, their grandfather and Old Chong waiting. Chong Feng was also with them but he drifted in an out of the area, for reasons unknown to everyone.

Lu Jiayi was on her phone.

Reading a message, Lu Jiayi frowned and then she walked over to her grandfather. The woman's voice was low but because the area where they all sat was quiet, everyone heard her.

"Grandpa, Xinya is coming soon but… she doesn't feel comfortable because," Lu Jiayi turned to look at Lu AnLing who subconsciously glared at the girl.

"I don't understand what she's uncomfortable with. We're in a hospital surrounded by family members, what does she expect will happen?" Lu AnLing's voice was strong and indifferent.

She sincerely didn't understand the point of Lu Xinya's act.

Before Lu AnLing's arrival, Lu Xinya was the resident star of the Lu family. She was equipped with an amazing singing teacher and the girl had even won a couple of compet.i.tions.

Like her sister, Lu Xinya liked to have the spotlight to herself and so, when Lu AnLing proved to be on par or even in some aspects, better, than her, Lu Xinya couldn't stand it.

Since the beginning, Lu Xinya and Lu AnLing had never really gotten along but one incident that sealed the fate of their relations.h.i.+p was when Lu AnLing had upstaged her in a singing compet.i.tion.

That day, all h.e.l.l broke loose and it ends with Lu Xinya getting a broken leg and Lu AnLing being blamed for it.

That day, her fathers words had run through Lu AnLing's mind. "Mr little siren, you should know that when you s.h.i.+ne bright, people will want to extinguish it."

That was exactly what had happened.

Lu AnLing quit going to compet.i.tions after that.

Remembering this, Lu AnLing frowned.

Looking Lu AnLing straight in the face, Lu Jiayi opened her mouth to argue but her Grandfather stopped her with a hand on her shoulder before he spoke to Lu AnLing.

"AnLing dear, it's best if you go." Grandpa Lu said before he turned to look at the girl. "Your mother will contact you once your grandmother wakes up."

Lu AnLing wanted to argue but the way the elder had said it, it was more like an order than a suggestion.

A part of Lu AnLing wanted to stay, but another really didn't want to start a big fight over something like this. So, after saying insincere goodbyes she left.

Walking down the hallway, Lu AnLing sent Kang Jun a message. She doubted he would answer her since it was so late but to her surprise, Kang Jun answered straight away.

King Kang: [I'm here.]

Following her, Chong Feng said, "I can give you a ride home if you want."

"No thank you."

Feeling a bit worried, Chong Feng spoke once more.

"Really, I can. It's dangerous for a girl to take a taxi alone, this late at night."

Lu AnLing shook her head.

"I'm not taking a taxi. A… friend, it coming to pick me up."

Hearing this, Chong Feng nodded.

Chong Feng accompanied the girl outside but he lingered a few steps behind her. He had already a.s.sumed who Lu AnLing was being picked up by and since he didn't know how jealous Kang Jun could be, he would much rather be safe than sorry.

Outside, Lu AnLing immediately noticed Kang Jun's car.

"My friends here." She said to Chong Feng before she ran to Kang Jun's car. Opening the car door and peering inside, Lu AnLing felt an intense calmness spread through her body.

She was so glad to see Kang Jun that she wanted to cry.

Turning to wave at Chong Feng, Lu AnLing smiled before she closed the door behind her.

Once inside, she turned to Kang Jun. "He's just the son of my grandmothers friend…"

Lu AnLing wasn't quite sure why she was explaining this but deep inside, she had felt like she had to. As she did, Kang Jun listened calmly, before replying.

"Don't worry. It's not a big deal. I know him."

Lu AnLing turned to give Kang Jun a look of confusion. Without looking at her, Kang Jun felt her stare so he continued to speak.

"He's the Kang family's doctor. He took over from his father a few years back. We were raised together."

Hearing this, Lu AnLing froze.

Chong Feng was the Kang family doctor?…

And Old Chong had been the doctor beforehand?…

Her mind wandered towards wild fantasies. But as she connected the dots, those wild fantasies didn't feel quite as farfetched as she had once thought. When she only knew about Rong Yue Wan's involvement, she had a small a.s.sumption that the Kang's could have had something to do with her child's disappearance but that was a reach, but now, with Old Chong's involvement Lu AnLing didn't know what to think.

The car stopped at a red light. A deep silence filled the car as both Lu AnLing and Kang Jun's minds were focused on other things.

Suddenly, Lu AnLing turned towards Kang Jun.

"Mr. Kang…" she murmured.

Kang Jung: "Mmm."

"You would never lie to me, would you?"

Hearing this, Kang Jun turned to her with a look of utter confusion.

The way Lu AnLing looked at him reminded Kang Jun of Kang Mingyu. Her eyes were clear and full of trust. Whatever he would answer, she would believe without a second thought.

"Never."

"Then, there's something I need to tell you…" There was a slight pause, but by now, Lu AnLing knew that Kang Jun would just stay silent until she finished her sentence.

Lu AnLing's heart palpitated hard. The noise filled the negative s.p.a.ce.

"I need your help."
