Even Elder Kang.
The old man was shocked. He was completely unaware what had happened neither when Kang Jun had met Kang Mingyu nor that day when he had left the house to see Elder Qiao and It wasn't like Kang Mingyu would ever tell him either.
Kang Jun took his seat and then crossed his arms over his chest.
A wave of cold pa.s.sed through the table. No one spoke a word until Kang Jun said,
"If no one speaks, I'll be taking my leave."
Hearing this, everyone reacted. They had almost forgotten their place because of the pressure Kang Jun had put into the atmosphere.
But with his words, they all turned and looked towards Elder Kang.
"Is this about Kang Corporations?" Kang Mu asked cautiously.
Elder Kang: "Yes."
Kang Mu's face turned slightly pale. He then turned to Kang Jun who sat covered in the same intense atmosphere he had entered with.
"Did Elder brother Jun mess up?" Kang Nianxi said. His voice was full of interest and worry but he hadn't asked the question out of concerned for Kang Jun.
"Not necessarily." Elder Kang said tiredly. "The problem is one of the subsidiaries under the both of you."
Kang Nianxi frowned.
"What are you saying?"
Elder Kang took a deep breath and the swept pa.s.sed everyone in the room with a stone cold gaze.
"In the past two months, Kang Corporation and its subsidiaries have been encountering several problems. There have been many projects that have encountered setbacks, some that have just fallen through and information has been leaked. Tonight, I've been informed that they've caught a corporate spy. "
Kang Mu and Kang Nianxi reacted in shock, while Kang Jun, Kang Liang, Mo Ruyi and Kang Liu Ran were silent.
They all had their own reasons to do so, but Kang Jun was the only one who had already known about the situation for a long time.
A couple of nights ago, Kang Jun had received a call from Elder Kang just as he was about to go to bed.
As always, Kang Jun didn't want to pick up but since the man was calling so late, he believed it was important. And he was right. There was an emergency.
One of Kang Corporation's subsidiary, mainly controlled by one of his younger brothers had encountered a problem. Information had been stolen and they had been pa.s.sed on to a competing company.
At first, Kang Jun was going to tell his grandfather to handle it himself but after hearing how drained the old man was, he took the responsibility onto himself.
It took a couple of long days and nights to figure out who the mole was and patch up the damage done, but Kang Jun did it anyway, and he still had the time to go to the hotel and eat dinner with Lu AnLing.
"Is that all?" Kang Jun asked. There was a slight bit of annoyance breaking through the man's cold exterior.
"No…" A painful expression appeared on Elder Kang's face. "Old Qiao suffered a heart attack."
The elder spoke slowly. Hearing this, expressions of concern appeared on Kang Mu and Kang Nianxi's faces but the rest remained unfazed, with the exception of Kang Liang's, whose eyes gleamed for a second.
If anyone hated Qiao Jianhong the most, Kang Liang did. For what the old man had done to his mother and her family, Kang Liang could never forgive.
But this was a story for another time…
"Is he okay?" Kang Mu asked with concern.
Elder Kang starred at his family with his dark eyes. "We aren't sure yet. He's in a coma."
Kang Mu and Kang Nianxi turned pale.
" Because of this, Rong Yue Wan has shown me a letter he had written." Once Elder Kang mentioned the letter, Secretary Rong proceeded to put a single piece of paper in front of every family member.
Every single one of them read the letter.
An expression of disbelief and anger flashed across Kang Liang's face. "Grandfather, you're kidding me right?"
The elder didn't reply.
"I have to agree with Liang," Kang Liu Ran spoke up this time. Kang Liu Ran manifested a face of disgust. "You want to adopt Qiao Lan? She's Zhi's window, she's already part of the family. Why must she be adopted?"
Kang Liu Ran was annoyed. Qiao Lan had always gotten special treatment within the Kang family, despite not being a legitimate family member and now the old fool was trying to adopt her?
Ridiculous!
Even though he had been raised in the family, Kang Liu Ran had always found the Kang's unfair. They practiced favouritism religiously and it had had a great impact on him when he was a child.
But if there was something he could count on it was that merit could bring him to the head of the family and that the Kang's believed that blood was thicker than water. Now, he even doubted that…
That made him sick.
In the Kang family, those who marry into the family didn't get as many rights as others. They were family, but they had barely any say in company business or even family business. The only one who did was Mo Ruyi because other than being antisocial, she was a genius.
Though when it came to matters such as this, Mo Ruyi was smart enough to keep her mouth shut.
Elder Kang: "I'm not doing anything as of yet. I am just a stand-in for the next heir, and so, I can no longer make decisions on my own."
"Then what do you suggest?" Kang Mu asked quickly.
Everyone was wondered the same thing.
Elder Kang: "We shall put it to a vote."
Everyone agreed.
What was to be done was simple. They would all cast a vote and the side with the most votes would be the one to be enacted.
They were seven so there was no way there would be a tie either.
"Okay. I will begin." Elder Kang said tiredly. "I vote yes."
After Elder Kang, it was Kang Liu Ran's turn.
"I'm sorry grandfather, but I cannot accept this. My vote is no."
Kang Nianxi glared at Kang Liu Ran. "How dare you! Lan Jie has always treated us like her brothers."
Kang Liu Ran rolled his eyes. "Yes. 'Like brothers.' We aren't her brothers, she should know her place."
Kang Nianxi was about to blow up, but then Elder Kang screamed at him. "Stop attacking your brother! It's your turn to vote."
"Yes Yeye…" Kang Nianxi sighed before shooting Kang Liu Ran another glare.
Kang Nianxi: "I vote yes."
Kang Mu beside him nodded his head. "I vote yes."
All eyes then turned to Kang Liang.
"I vote no." Kang Liang said through clenched teeth.
Now, there were three yes's and two no's and it was Mo Ruyi's turn to vote. The whole time, the woman had remained completely composed, even when so much pressure laid in the palm of her hands, Mo Ruyi looked as if what she was about to say was simple.
Elder Kang looked at her with deep meaning in his eyes.
A part of him was worried about the outcome. He knew the answers of every single man in the room but as for Mo Ruyi, he wasn't sure. She was a wild card. She didn't exactly like Qiao Lan but she didn't hate her either.
The woman understood the girl's status and her place in Elder Kang's heart, so her answer was simple.
Mo Ruyi: "I vote no."
Hearing this, everyone turned to look at her with shock. With the exception of Kang Jun.
Kang Mu and Kang Nianxi were almost 100 percent sure that Mo Ruyi would choose yes. Qiao Lan was Mo Ruyi's first choice to be Kang Jun's bride, after all. How could she do this?
"Why?" Kang Mu asked with confusion.
Uncaringly, Mo Ruyi brushed her hair off her shoulder. "Isn't it simple? Why would I want a stranger to have equal rights as my son? Rights that even I myself don't have. It would be illogical for me to vote yes."
Listening to his wife say it out loud. Kang Mu understood though he felt a bit insulted. His wife had pretty much called him illogical and had accused him of being against his sons.
Elder Kang understood her also, but he had to try to make her reconsider. She was his only hope.
"Ruyi, since your married to Mu, I cannot adopt you into the family but…"
"Are you telling me that if he dies or if I divorce him you'll do the same for me?" Mo Ruyi didn't hold back her words.
The reply made Kang Mu's face change. "Don't tell me you're considering it?"
Mo Ruyi didn't reply.
Just because she had said it, didn't mean she would act on those 'if's'. Elder Kang knew this well so he didn't get angry.
"Ah Ruyi, Lan will not have the same rights are the boys. I swear. Adopting her only means that she will feel safe after her grandfather pa.s.ses away. You must understand, her father has died and her mother is sick. If her grandfather dies, she'll only have her estranged cousins and aunt left. We're the family that she's known her whole life. We can't just abandon her."
Mo Ruyi was unmoved.
"I'm sorry, father, but my decision had already been made."
Hearing this, the elder was completely dejected. He leaned back into his chair weakly. His eyes not even looking at anyone anymore.
It was now Kang Jun's turn to vote but Elder Kang knew that hope was already lost. He might as well adjourn the meeting right now.
Suddenly, Kang Jun spoke.
"I vote yes."
