Clark turned back.

"RUN TO THE BASE," he shouted, "NOW!"

The leader's voice sent everyone running away.

Clark looked up to see how the mages are, to his relief, no one was up there.

Having a better vantage point, the Mages must have seen the monsters and retreated earlier. Clark's idea of leaving a standby truck to the Mage team saved the physically weak mages.

Clark closed his eyes firmly, then steadied his breath.

The sound of flapping wings behind him became louder, while the footsteps of the other hunters became lighter.

Ironically, the danger of the situation made his mind run slower.

'Think Clark, think!' he inwardly berated himself.

He tried to think more, but nothing entered his brain.

'Ah... That's it!'

A sudden idea entered his head when he remembered something from a hunter's guidebook.

For someone so big, he was surprisingly smart. When he's calm, he's able to make rational decisions from a single fact alone.

After he finished a battle plan, Clark opened his eyes, then ran immediately.

After running for a few seconds, he caught up with the other hunters.

"Clark, what's the plan?" Damian asked.

Clark looked him at the eyes before opening his mouth to talk.

"Run."

"s.h.i.+t."

Damian cursed before hastening his pace.

Clark saw a large shadow approaching the team, then shouted on top of his voice.

"DODGE!"

Before finis.h.i.+ng his words, a ma.s.sive creature started falling from the sky.

Clark stretched his arms, then pushed the hunters beside him.

The other hunters jumped and rolled to avoid the impending danger.

*BOOM*

A large cloud of mixed dust and snow rose up from where the hunters were standing earlier.

"ROOOAAAAAR!"

The roar blasted a gust of wind, enough to blow the dust away and send a s.h.i.+ver down in everyone's spine.

A 5-meter tall, quadrupedal lizard, dressed in thick, silvery scales was sitting straight up against them. Two horn-like ears tipped its head. The wings it had earlier became forelegs that supported its ma.s.sive body.

Smaller monsters of its race were behind it.

The hunters who saw the wyverns can't help but shudder in fear.

The monsters' slightly opened mouth filled with sharp, jagged teeth seemed like a grin of death to the shocked hunters. The silver eyes on the side of their heads failed to hide their desire for the hunters' flesh.

"S-silver wyverns?" Rosh stutteringly asked.

Rosh's question clarified everyone's fear.

Known for their glistening scales and ma.s.sive size, Silver Wyverns are the mountain's top predator. Due to their elegant appearance and rare sightings, they became the mountain's legend.

But legend or not, the fact that they are deadly creatures that consider humans as a delicacy, will not change.

"If you got time to dawdle, then you should have time to run," Clark said

Clark withdrew the ma.s.sive sword from his back then urged his mana. Like metal tempered with flames, the blade's temperature rose while radiating a faint orange glow.

The wyvern growled like a starting machine. The mana released by Clark means only one thing to it. A challenge.

"I'm gonna stop these b.a.s.t.a.r.ds while you run," he said.

"Hey, Clark, don't tell me... " Arthur said in disbelief.

"It's the least I can do," Clark said in a sad tone, he looked at Arthur in the eye before continuing, "take care of them."

The stout man wants to argue but stopped. The Silver Wyvern in front of Clark is in its zenith. He may have the will to help, but he can't. He's weak.

He gave Clark a rea.s.suring smile, then ran.

The other hunters hesitated at first, but being on the same side of the coin, they followed after.

The smaller wyverns tried to follow the hunters, but the zenith one stopped them. For it, hunting the E-rank hunters is like catching lambs who can never fight back. As a monster with the blood of dragons, the zenith's pride was understandable.

The Zenith turned to face Clark. The monster looked at him with contempt.

The wyvern suddenly raised its head, then took a deep breath. The wyvern's throat lit up in yellowish light for a moment. The monster aimed its mouth, then shoot plumes of fire towards Clark.

Clark raised his s.h.i.+eld to block the incoming fire, then rolled towards the left side.

After recovering his stance, he tightened his grip on his sword, then charged towards the wyvern.

The tyrannic reptile gave him no breathing s.p.a.ce. After seeing Clark recover, the wyvern lunged at him with its claws.

Clark managed to duck, making the wyvern hit nothing but the cold snow.

He poured more mana to the sword, then swung it immediately, exploiting the wyvern's open side.

*CLANG*

Sparks flew as the blade and scales clashed.

"AAARRGGHH!" the wyvern cried.

********

Though everyone thinks that Clark became a D-rank hunter due to his skill at the sword and herculean strength, n.o.body knows that Clark is a Fire Elementalist. He's blessed with an affinity for fire but cursed with a low mana quotient. He tried conjuring fireb.a.l.l.s before, but this left him unconscious due to mana loss. As such, he gave up on magic and focused on strengthening himself.

But, fate loves to play with people.

One day, while practicing his swordsmans.h.i.+p, Clark accidentally infused mana in his sword. The blade heated up then melted.

Clark immediately researched for a metal that can make full use of his quirk. In his search, he found Tungsten. A hard metal with a high melting point and brittleness. At the start, using a sword made of Tungsten is impossible. Having a high melting point made the sword best for him, but Tungsten is just too brittle. The blade will usually break after hitting a monster. Thus, Clark came up with a smart but crude solution.

Make a ma.s.sive club-like sword.

As a result, he's now wielding a ma.s.sive, thick, and rough sword made of Tungsten. The weapon became hard and heavy beyond comparison.

Clark's quirk and his weapon made SIlver Wyverns vulnerable against him.

The majority of monsters can not choose the environment they occupy. As such, they change themselves to accommodate. Forced to live on a metal-rich mountain, Silver Wyverns became rare species that ate metals as a staple food. During p.u.b.erty, the Silver Wyverns will start growing scales made out of metal. Protecting them from other monsters, but leaving them weak against hot solid objects.

**********

The scales were undamaged, but the wyvern cried in pain. The cold silver scales earlier was now searing hot.

The wyvern snarled. It lowered its body, curled its spiny tail, then whipped towards Clark.

's.h.i.+t!' Clark inwardly cursed.

Clark was able to react on time and raise his s.h.i.+eld, but the impact from the collision sent him flying.

The s.h.i.+eld on his hand bent, while his arm felt numb.

"AAARRGGHH!"

A sharp pain erupted from his back when he smashed towards a boulder.

Clark spent no time down. He immediately grabbed his s.h.i.+eld, then removed it from his arm. He stood up, grabbed his sword, then recovered his stance.

Giving Clark no time to rest, the wyvern let out an ear-splitting roar before leaping like a tiger towards him.

Seeing the wyvern on-air, Clark saw a chance.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.

He felt time stretch longer.

His heartbeat became slower but stronger.

His two hands involuntarily tightened around the sword's handle.

If his plan fails, he's good as dead.

Using the change in the air currents, Clark felt the wyvern's position.

After a moment, Clark opened his eyes.

Clark stomped his right foot forward, then raised his sword overhead.

Using every muscle on his body, Clark swung his ma.s.sive sword forward.

"AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!"

*BANG*

His ma.s.sive sword fell with a loud thud on the snow-covered ground.

*BOOM*

A large cloud of mixed dust and snow flew up when the wyvern's body fell from above, just like how it appeared.

Clark turned to see the knocked-out wyvern.

"Hahaha... Gotcha, f.u.c.ker," he said while smiling from ear to ear.

"Argh!"

Clark's face twitched as sudden blasts of pain erupted from all over his body. His knees suddenly weakened, forcing him to use his sword as support.

He may be as strong as a bear, but against machine-like monsters, his body will break down from overwork.

He was in this line of thinking when low and guttural growls came from behind him.

Clark let out a sigh of annoyance. The zenith is dead, but the problem became worse. Behind him, more than ten Siver Wyverns are waiting for a free kill. Without strength to fight, Clark is nothing but dead meat.

Clark looked up. The clouds on the sky formed like a woman in his memories.

"Angelica, wait for me there."
