Vlada decided that the time had come for her attack. She crossed her swords abruptly, as if sharpening one with the other. The collision of blades created a blinding flash of light. The energy charge flew past all of us and, having hit a nearby tree, turned into a cloud of sparks.
"Not bad." Meaning completely opposite, Fox summoned her dagger with a gleaming dark blade that had a slight silver s.h.i.+mmer to it.
Immediately after that, a volume rune, similar to an elongated blur, flew up across her outstretched hand. The next moment, Fox got covered by a translucent dark cloak, under which a mist had begun to thicken.
"You opened your Mask pretty quickly. It's incomplete yet, but still..." Petrovich tensed up. I watched her with amazement. She looked very similar to the Reaper we had met before. So, it wasn't his appearance, but the manifestation of this mysterious rune. Very interesting.
Unlocking the Mask
Level 4
That was all.
In the meantime, completely oblivious to the lancer, Fox swung her dagger. It created a current of air that cut the previously damaged tree into two pieces. I, with my Flame Flow and a Stone Spikes, felt ashamed. And these were just the ordinary warriors?
"As you can see, I'm pretty good at using its power." Fox returned to her usual appearance. Although she tried not to show it, beads of sweat appeared on her temples. "You two can't cope with me. Leave and be grateful that you weren't sent to the cemetery."
"Are you sure that you aren't just talking out of your a.s.s and stroking your own ego?" Despite his words, our leader didn't sound confident at all. Holding his lance at arm's length, he also seemed to be preparing to demonstrate his strength. They are afraid of each other, and are trying to delay the conflict.
"Be careful, just in case. There's probably another one nearby. As I said, we had another one like Vlada, remember? He has the Mark of the Abyss, too." Taking advantage of the delay, I decided to remind Fox of the potential danger. She shouldn't lose; I wouldn't last long without her support. Despite all that she had done, I still couldn't treat her as a stranger. For some reason, I believed that she really wanted to help me.
"I don't think that he's alive anymore," still looking at the lancer, the girl whispered. "Our esteemed Valentin Petrovich has an advanced Mark. You can get it only by permanently killing someone with the same Mark. The Abyss isn't for wimps. Only the strongest get to the next stage. It spares no one."
It was true. Igor had just recently gained level 1 of his Mark. It seemed that Petrovich considered him expendable right after that. Was that his plan from the very beginning?
"Look, this is what real power looks like!" Petrovich's hoa.r.s.e voice caught our attention. Making sure that everyone was looking at him, he swung his spear and stuck it into the ground.
The earth, and the remains of the poor tree, exploded, showering us with clay and stone. One of the rocks. .h.i.t my shoulder, lowering my health by almost a hundred. Focusing on the logs, I tried to see the exact damage, but saw nothing.

"Directed Thrust," Fox mused, looking at the fallout of the strange blow. Could "players" really perform attacks powerful enough to destroy the local terrain through development of ordinary close combat skills? When did Petrovich manage to become this powerful? Was it because of the advanced Mark of the Abyss?
"I can do that too!" Honestly, I just couldn't watch this anymore. I got so used to being someone significant in this world; I couldn't stand being an outsider all of a sudden.
Without any preparation, I swung my scythe and plunged it into the ground, casting my two-inch Stone Spikes to rise under Petrovich and Vlada. The lancer only stared at the Spike that didn't even manage to pierce his armor. The swordswoman, however, screamed in surprise and jumped to the side, leaving behind a puddle of blood.
"Wow!" Fox looked genuinely happy. "You can do that too? It's still weak but look at its speed! And that's without the help of a Mark!"
Petrovich and Vlada also looked at me with surprise, as if an ant under their feet suddenly spoke; not only spoke but also cursed all of them and their relatives. As for me, I kept trying to figure out what was going on around me and what to do next.
So far, I could only say one thing for sure — all of my guesses about who was on which side were wrong. When mentioning the apprentice of the Reaper, Dorea meant Fox, not Osipov. The two followers of the Abyss turned out to be Vlada and Petrovich, not Vlada and Igor. Who is on the chaos side then?
"Look who's here. Do you mind if we join you?" Innokenty and Major appeared from the forest.
