The time had come to turn my plan into action. There was no need to wait any longer. From somewhere came the sound of crumbling stone, as if the universe itself was confirming my thoughts.
The City claimed its first victim; the remains of the old road parted under the feet of the impatient and careless Egor, and a hand, covered with scabs, emerged from the ground, grabbed the guy's leg and dragged him under. Like an alligator emerging from a bayou, the creature quietly crept up, s.n.a.t.c.hed its unsuspecting victim and disappeared under the water.
However, unlike the reptile's victims, Egor knew what awaited him. A desperate howl like scream rose from the bowel of the underground.
"They're eating him alive!" Stepan shouted and rushed forward, if not to save the boy then to at least end his suffering.
At the very last moment, I grabbed him by the scruff of his neck stopping him dead in his tracks. At that moment, another hand emerged from the ground right in front of him and grabbed air instead of his leg. As I thought, the monster wasn't alone. Otherwise, we could have tried to save Egor because the creature, named Lurker, was only level 25.
I tried to keep calm, although I was shaken. "Thanks to Egor, we learned an important lesson about the Forbidden City."
"What lesson? That it's dangerous here? There was no doubt about that." Anton came closer and stopped beside me. Egor wasn't screaming anymore and everyone was slowly coming to their senses.
"No, now we know that we should walk only where the road isn't destroyed. We should be safe from such attacks. We also saw the monster's level. Yeah, 25 is a lot, but we can deal with that." I saw fear slowly leave their eyes. Death was unpleasant, sure, but once you realize that a person died for a reason and you got something in return, it's easier to cope with it.
I cast a glance at Vlada and Igor's status, just in case, and soon forgot about everything else.
Mark of the Abyss: Level 1
Mark of the Abyss: Level 2
It was now a part of Igor's status, and the level of Vlada's Mark had increased. I didn't know whether that happened naturally or because of Egor's death. To be honest, I didn't want to know. I had enough suspicions as is. I definitely couldn't wait any longer. I wished that I could just ask about it. Though, somehow I doubted that they would answer me.
"Shadows on the trees!" I shouted at the top of my voice and pointed somewhere behind us, taking advantage of their confusion.
I inhaled Holly, and, invested points in a blow, struck Vlada's and then, without delay, Igor's neck that could be seen over the edge of his new armor. My strength had reached 120, and neither of them had more than 60 points of endurance, so I had no problem with separating their heads from their bodies. Sure, health points were important in this world, but no one could live without a head on their shoulders.
"What was that?!" Semyon jumped to the side with a yell. Not knowing what to do yet, he tried to keep his distance. Reasonable enough.
"Take it easy," I put the scythe away and raised my hands as if to demonstrate that I wasn't going to attack. Although the scythe's base attack was only 15, the rest being added by my abilities, this was just for show. "Igor and Vlada were attacked by two shadows. Their faces began to turn black, so I had to make a quick decision. Better that they resp.a.w.n at the camp than to be killed by something like these creatures."
After hearing my explanation, everyone instantly heaved a sigh of relief and cheerfully followed my advice to move away from this dangerous place. I was afraid that my behavior would cause a riot, but everything worked out, bringing me 2,000 deception points and unlocking Deception level 6. I think I finally understand the base of a perfect lie: make sure that people don't have to do anything if they believe you. And if you're exposed, they'll have to make tough choices so as to deal with that. In that case, they'll convince themselves of everything.
"Semyon," I turned to the cop the moment we were a safe distance away from that place, "you know that we have to tell Petrovich about what happened to those two. Something could go wrong, so I suggest looking after them for some time. Make them stay at base. Petrovich told you what should be done in this case, didn't he?"
"Yes," the man turned pale, but nodded. "You want me to deliver this message to him? What's the pa.s.sword?"
"The elephants are going north," I said, and then asked Semyon to tell the others about our postal agreement. The same trick wouldn't work out twice.
The sooner we send him with a message, the higher the chances were that Vlada and Igor won't have time to do anything. At least they didn't have a clear understanding that I had killed them on purpose. It'd be best not to waste time.
"End me with one hit, the same way you did with those two." Semyon tilted his head, exposing his neck and putting his weapon back into the inventory.

He was showing off, but I didn't care. I summoned my scythe, swung and struck. Steel hit steel. At the very last moment, Semyon managed to summon his dagger and repel my attack.
Your attack has been blocked.
Damage dealt: 0
"Now I can boast that repelled Cat's attack," he smiled genuinely all of a sudden. "Let's do it again, for real this time. Even you can make a mistake, so be cautious and don't show off."
He wasted my time, lectured and insulted me, but I felt like I was given good advice and a blessing. Maybe the guy wasn't as bad as I thought.
